WASHINGTON - Federal regulators formally approved the merger of the nation's only two satellite radio operators Friday, ending a 16-month-long drama closely watched by Washington and Wall Street.
Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.'s $3.3 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. will mean 18 million-plus subscribers will be able to receive programming from both services. Executives say it will mean huge cost savings that will lead to a first-ever profit for the relatively nascent industry.
The Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 to approve the buyout, with the tiebreaker coming Friday night from Republican commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate.

Nice. I am considering diving in. I kinda dig listening to the radio, even when I have my pod with me. Now with my GPS and radio receiver, there will be all sorts of shit hanging off my dashboard.
-
Yeah, newer cars have satellite built in now like MY NEW CAR WOOOWwjlkrj;asldkfjs;dlf

How much do the subscriptions cost? Is there just one subscription or are there different plans in order to better fuck the consumer?
-
Haha, there are different payment plans, but the packages are all the same iirc. I mean they have an internet 'satellite' radio only package (talkin sirius here) then they have the satellite radio package which is pretty much THE package for those with receivers, and that has multiple payment cycle types.
I've definitely noticed that the built in receiver on my car is 10000000x better at picking shit up than the old one I bought, so id do some researching

I'm paying 12.95 a month right now for XM.

Fucking finally. Can't wait to see O&A fight with stern, even more then they have been.
They're going to dump O&A. 1)When mergers like this happen talent gets booted. 2) Stern will make sure they're booted :lol

Uhhhhh no. O&A draw a bigger crowd than Stern. They would be stupid to drop O&A, as they'd easily lose about 2 million subs.
-
They paid less for XM than what they paid for Howard Stearn. :lol

No they don't. They actually only have like 70 days left on their XM contract and haven't be in negotiations to resign. Howard's two channels are the most listened two on satellite radio, including XM.
People were canceled when they were first suspended from XM, and it didn't seem to make much of a dent....
-
Theres no way to measure how many people listen to what on the satelites, but O&A are one of the most listened to, and XM would be distinguished mentally-challenged to let them go and lose about 2 million subs.
-
Um, how do you know they are the most listened to? Both companies keep those numbers internal. Only thing we can go by are radio diaries, which have Howard's two channels as #1 and #2 between the two companies. And where is your 2 million subs number coming from?
If they were that important, I would think they'd have reupped their contracts by now. And Eric Logan is gone from the company, which doesn't bode well for O&A.
-
I don't even know why they would keep that shitfaggot Howard anyways. Scumbag he is.
-
Probably because he's really popular and helped Sirius come from behind and make them the dominant company in the "merger"? (it's effectively a buyout)
:lol
