I'm getting it on PS3.  I expect online play to be shit, but other than that it looks to be great.

I still can't decide which version to get.  Friends back home are getting it on PS3, but I think more people will be playing on 360.

It's getting pretty good reviews, so yes.  I love the original Soul Calibur, but I have soured on the series since 2.  Hopefully this is a return to form.  Not sure which version I should get, leaning toward PS3 due to the controller.

I'll get it for the 360 later on when I'm not broke. SC games are my favorite fighting games.

I throughly enjoyed SC2. Thinking about getting this and if I do it will be for the 360 since I have the Hori 360 stick.  I understand that after all of the d/l content is released that both versions will be identical in terms of content.

Also, from the gaf egm thread:

SoulCalibur IV - A, B+, B+
Good: Extreme fun and value
Bad: Darth Vader is pretty lame
Title: Re: Is anyone buying Soul Calibur 4?

Yeah, probably DLC or something.

I also don't get why EGM brought noted that Vader sucked, but didn't bring up that Yoda breaks the game.  You can't grab Yoda at all and most horizontal attacks pass over his head.

And looks like the PS3 version doesn't require an install, but there is an option if you want it.  Apparently 15 minute optional install, but the only thing it really changes is how fast characters appear on the character selection screen.

gameflying it.  not a fan of the fighting game, but character creation should be fun.  funnily enough, the best part of SC3 was that RTS mode :lol.

I got it this morning. I am liking it so far. It feels slower and weightier, some people might consider it a good thing. I am indifferent. A lot of the characters have had their move sets rehauled (e.g. Maxi is almost like a different character). Graphics are good, if not a bit excessive with the overused bloom lighting. The soundtrack is great, which is of no surprise.

Online play is as laggy as Dark Resurrection's.

I think it's solid from what I've played today. Please note that this is coming from someone who only enjoyed the first Soul Calibur (but still bought the rest). :-\

I'll try to give more in-depth impressions tomorrow. Feel free to ask away for now.

P.S. Darth Vader blows. Get the 360 version.

watching all those vf5r videos makes me want a 3d fighter. sc4 should do -- though i'm bummed that there's only one real new character. on the other hand i just bought a bunch of games in that tru b1g1 glitch, and i don't want to develop a next-gen backlog

I don't think anyone is dumb enough to be picking a version based on what bonus character there is in there.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/07/22/soulcalibur-iv-bringing-darth-vader-exclusively-to-ps3/ vader looks good based on these vids, though obviously the vids are there to show him off.  just looks like he plays differently than most SC characters.  regardless, it's better than having the broken yoda in your game.  nothing's more annoying than a character who is too small like that--the character will undoubtedly be banned from all but joke matches and it'll be little more than a novelty.

there should be an options screen that lets you turn off the shitty guest characters :'(

the yoda situation sounds like how you couldn't lose a mp game in timesplitters 2 if you chose the monkey. :lol

yoda's cheap.

And most horizontal attacks go over his head.  Vader probably sucks because of the ranged attacks he has.

So you've never been to GAF?

I just haven't really read those threads, I am just assuming.

I'm getting it on PS3 because of my VSHG.  Only reason.

if you can't turn yoda (and if necessary, vader too) off for online battles...

fail fail fail fail fail.  what was even worse than shitty netcode in fighting games is when people are able to select boss characters and novelty characters in online matches.  online leaderboards and win records only exacerbate this problem.

they're either inappropriate visitors from the disgraced star wars franchise or badly drawn animu chix, so yes, they're exactly as awesome as link

Well, Vader is on the 360 disc. People are assuming that spot is reserved for him in the upcoming "DLC".

Are you sure it isn't just 'random'?

i wanted to get the ps3 version because of the better dpad but no 1080 support, custom soundtracks, and trophies killed off that idea.

so 360 version it is.
Title: Re: Is anyone buying Soul Calibur 4?
Post by: demi on July 26, 2008, 10:58:31 PM
Now that trophies are in PS3 games, I think this leverages 360 versions of games as better, since all games have HAD them since the beginning.
Title: Re: Is anyone buying Soul Calibur 4?

i'm getting the ps3 version because all my rl friends own PS3s, so if i want to play with them i gotta go with that

plus the controls - doa frustrated the hell out of me on that shitty 360 d-pad

my late friend alex was really into fighting games, especially the tekken and sc series

he used to set the controller on his knee and use his fingertips on the buttons, looked awkward as shit but he would just fucking destroy us

we used to say that when a new fighting game came out we only had about a week or two to enjoy it, because after that alex had it mastered and none of us could beat him

i'm still looking around for the hori 360 controller. not having much luck tho.

if it comes down to it i'll buy an arcade stick even tho i prefer playing with a controller.
