Yeah, looks like some awesome releases. I am a little worried about the Bionic release. The last two 'enhanced' capcom games have felt like major cash ins

To be perfectly honest, it actually still looks like a series of lame flash games strung together to make one game.  It has some neat ideas, and I will try out the demo to see if it is more than what it seems, but I still don't think it is anything special based on videos and info about it.  The style is also quite bad.  And whoever the guy is who is narrating the video is actually kind of a dick.

I want Dishwasher instead to make this line up truly perfect.

Capcom probably couldn't put in Hitler.

Capcom probably couldn't put in Hitler.

That isn't Hitler or an edited Hitler, it is General Wiseman.  You don't see Hitler until the end of Bionic Commando, but it will probably be Master D in this version like it was in the American version in the past.

regarding Dishwasher, some new info:

http://skasoftware.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/status-update/

Quote
- The Dishwasher has a million, billion bugs. I’m fixing them all very quickly.

- The GDC build of The Dishwasher was sort of slow. The frame rate hovered around 30. This has been fixed–it’s now a steady 60!

- I’m locking the screen size at 1280 x 720. I figured that because all of my favorite AAA games do this, I’ll do it too. This addresses frame rate fluctuations and cramped menu issues.

- The dishwasher’s weapons and clothes now get stained by blood (small detail).

- There is now a Ranked story mode–it’s a brutal difficulty that’s roughly the same difficulty as Samurai. Ranked is more strict, but playing ranked obviously allows you to compare score and speed against the rest of the world.

- The game supports 3 player co-op in story mode (unranked only). It’s kind of messy. I’m going to make it a little less messy.

It’s been a wild ride, but I’m nearing the end of the tunnel!

Braid got a 9 in Edge.

From GAF:

Braid:

Plays upon conventions of Mario, but closer to Portal
Designed just as well as Portal (!!!)
Each level has a new mechanic: act 3's is brilliant - steps to the right advances time, steps to the left reverses it.
Fails somewhat with it's storytelling - "trite in it's self-conscious obscurity"
Story's themes aren't reflected well in-game until the final level.
One of the finest original titles on Xbox Live Arcade.

Alright.  Summer of XBLA is in trouble.

Quote from: Kotaku
Those of you adding Microsoft points to your account for the upcoming releases of Braid and Castle Crashers this month might want to add a few more than the 800 a shot we're used to. According to the official Japanese Xbox 360 blog, August 6th's Braid will be setting gamers back 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), with Castle Crashes weighing in at 1800 Points ($22.50?) - the most expensive Live Arcade game yet. Note that these are Japanese prices, while also noting that they generally coincide with European and North American prices.

Some will meet these prices with outrage, while I say why not? I've played both of these titles (Braid extensively) and they are completely worth the extra real currency substitute. I've paid $60 for disc-based titles that had a quarter of the entertainment value of these two games. More power to them.

Ouch.

Looks like I'll only be getting Bionic Commando, along with my GeoWars2. I want value for my space bucks and only a few games on XBLA manage to do that where I don't feel like it's a steep price (Geometry Wars RE and RE2 for example), Bionic Commando seems to be follow that rare trend too. I barely have any XBLA games either.

I'm still going to get Braid because it looks freakin' brilliant but Castle Crashers...man that hurts.  I don't like the idea of paying that much for a XBLA game.
Title: Re: Xbox Live - Summer of arcade
Post by: y2kev on July 30, 2008, 01:01:39 PM
1800? No game has ever been 1800. I have never paid that much for an arcade style game. Demo better be kickass. I was going to buy a 1600 pts card to take care of braid and castlecrashers but now it looks like it won't even cover CC :\
Title: Re: Xbox Live - Summer of arcade
Post by: cool breeze on July 30, 2008, 01:11:35 PM
I don't care that much about the prices if they turn out to be good.  I will try the demo, and if that turns out to be good, I will wait for reports on how long or how much content the game provides, and if that turns out good, then I will pick it up.  I don't know if I will do it right away since I need to buy Siren, Eden, and Geo Wars 2 first, but yeah.

Post by: Hitler Stole My Potato on July 31, 2008, 01:06:11 AM
Yeah, I've paid 1200 for games before (Lumines, Puzzle Quest), but I think 1800 or whatever Castle Crashers is, is taking the piss. They've probably read all the negative feedback today and are reconsidering it, but I'm sure it will release at that price. They are just trying to kill some of the negative hype.

1800 would be fucking distinguished mentally-challenged.  They don't even sell 1800pt cards.  1600pts for Castle Crashers is still too much but at least you could go out and buy a single card for it if you wanted to.

I'm thinking it'll come out at 1600.

If it was a retail-only release, almost any of us would buy Castle Crashers for $19.99.  In fact, people would probably be cheering what a great "budget title" it was.

Addendum: for what it's worth, The Behemoth is saying it won't be 1800 points.

That's because you start every morning with a big bowl of Crabby Flakes, Chief Nofun of the Idoanwannas.

No big surprise there.

If the demo is fun, I will buy it.  I still hate the art style to it.  It reminds me of those hideous filters for SNES emulators, except somehow worse and with horrible blur effects.  Looking at pictures of this game almost makes me ill.  This is one of those cases where I would be more interested if it had good aethetics to match the seemingly interesting gameplay.  I'm so glad both Portal and Mirror's Edge had good aethetics that matched their respective gameplay styles.
