I didn't even know it was on blu-ray.  I have to go buy it.  I enjoyed it the last two times I saw it, but I heavily disagree with the title.  Now if you were to say The Matrix, a comparison used in the past, there would be some room for agreement.

Hey, I saw it opening day in theaters, and several more times over the next few weeks (including times when I and those I dragged along were the only people in the theaters).

I'm a founding member of this cult, thank you very much!

It was my first DVD ever. :-[

Which, given how many I've bought over the years, is actually sort of an impressive distinction.

It got lost behind Titanic, The Wedding Singer, and Good Will Hunting.

I really wish Dark City didn't just casually throw out a huge spoiler in the first five seconds.

The action sequences in this are so fucking horrendous. Just abysmal in every way. But the atmosphere is incredible.

Didn't think it was better than The Matrix though.

Exactly.  I never got the love for this movie, although the atmosphere was amazing.  It just didn't grab me, I'd be open to watching it again, though.  Seemed like I was always waiting for something cool to happen and it never did.

Everyone I've met (i/e not people online) has preferred The Matrix, bar none.

The Matrix Reloaded > The Matrix

I never liked the original

I like all three matrix movies, I also like Dark City despite a few scenes.

In a lot of ways I agree with you.  Nothing beats the wtf moment when they 'reveal' the plot of The Matrix though.  For that mindfuck alone the sequels never stood a chance, although I enjoy them all.

see, I never understood that

never, from the very moment I began watching The Matrix from the first time in theaters, did I have any doubt what it was about or what the Matrix was. seriously! this probably comes from reading too much science fiction, especially PKD (c.f. Time Out of Joint in particular), but...

As with all science fiction of merit, Dark City is just a ripoff of an old Doctor Who story, anyway:

Quote
In the Doctor Who story "Castrovalva", as the Doctor and his companions explore the titular city, they continually find themselves back at the same courtyard, and realize the city folds back on itself and there is no exit. Eventually the native inhabitants of the city begin to realize their lives and memories have been created and manipulated by an outside force.

It's the first Peter Davison episode and one of the all-time classics in the series.

Except instead of creepy noiry alien things putting on the show, you get Ainley's classic portrayal of The Master.  Also, I think it is the last episode with any footage of Tom Baker as the Doctor in it.

Are the old Doctors available on dvd?  I'm sure they are but I can't be bothered to look.

They're slowly being released.

A lot of them are, from the third Doctor on up, but not nearly all of them.  There's a box set with Castrovalva, Logopolis and, uh, whatever the first part of that series of stories is.  I think the DVD releases focus on the third to fifth Doctors, since six and seven suck and most of the episodes for one and two are lost.  They are BBC Video though so it is rape rape.
