A fan asked for more scientifically minded female characters. "Smart chicks in leather, huh?" Quesada asked. "Somebody write that down."

Quesada has also banned Marvel characters from smoking, including Wolverine, the Thing, J. Jonah Jameson and Nick Fury. This stems from his own father's death from lung cancer and his feeling that these characters, whom kids look up to, should not be seen smoking

hm i didn't know this.

That is a bit lame.  Even if the characters are smoking, just show them getting negatively influenced instead of taking away an aspect of their character.  Next thing you know DC isn't going to allow Batman to partake in sodomy.

That's why we have Wildstorm!

This is really gay.  Nobody can really deny that smoking makes people look cooler.  Being a visual medium, smoking is an incredibly useful aesthetic device.

DC wins again. Flawless victory.

Joe Quesada resurrected Marvel from the dead and pumped out some of the best runs it had ever seen in the early to mid whatever-we-call-this-decade.  His big focus was not worrying about convoluted continuity, but telling a good story.  Somehow that has twisted into EVERYTHING MUST BE A CROSSOVER.

It's horrible.

I was telling TVC that I hang out in my local comic book shop on my breaks, because it's in the same shopping area, has a couch and if it's not Wednesday or the weekend, I can talk to the manager.

The two of us (the manager and I) used to subscribe to countless books, but now it's down to two for me - three for him.  And he owns the place!

Remember when Morrison was pumping out New X-Men?  Millar first tackled The Ultimates?  Brubaker and Cooke on Catwoman?  All the great non-cape stuff that popped up like, Y The Last Man, Sleeper, Hard Target, etc.

Oh, I miss you.

There isn't much of an industry anymore to bring back.

It will survive on TPBs and its brief resurgence thanks to licensed properties getting the Hollywood treatment, but the days of local comic book shops and the standard distribution format are near an end.

You know what would bring it back?  Sweet, sweet cigarettes.

Tobacco products are cool. Suck it, Quesada!

I also think the continuity has gotten out of control.  The stable horses are not very easy to pick up and read.  Plus, a lot of these characters have been around so long that there's nothing else to do with them.  Instead, we get half-baked "events" and deaths that are retconned a few months later after Marvel or DC gets their sales spikes from CNN or MSNBC headlines.  I'd really like to see a lot of the heroes shelved.  You could always do re-imaginings or one shots, but the soap operas are out of control.

Luna Brothers The Sword and Girls.

Boom! Studios is putting out a lot of neat mini-series stuff

Dead Space is interesting.  Sci-fi horror with a religious angle (new religion based on alien predecessors)

walking dead is great, but i only read it in trades

I haven't bought a comic since Claremont's meh-tastic return to X-Men back in 2000. People keep saying Morrison's 2001 run was nice but I don't know if I can muster the energy or interest to return to comics

Is this based on the videogame?

Same here.  That and Ex Machina are the only TPBs I pick up routinely.

potter's field is interesting anthology (non connected stories with a framing backdrop) work form Mark Waid
north wind (new ice age.  fun antidote to the routine desert postapoc)
station (first issue is AWESOME.  it's a whodunit set on the international space station)

THe only comics I read are the Punisher Max series; and while i own all the hard cover TB, I must admit that the last one has kind of turned me off. The writers were a bit trying to hard to be edgy and I was left  ??? all the time.

The last arc was about a bunch of widows taking revenge on the Punisher for killing their husbands; and there's that awkward running joke about one of woman being obsessed with oral sex. I think there's like 30 allusions to that in the arc; it's fucking annoying and makes me feel distinguished mentally-challenged reading it.

Oh and she dies by getting shot in the mouth. WOW  :-\

This was almost as awkward as that Nic guy who was banging his superfat aunt from he was 10 to like 25 part from the second arc.

I mean.. shut the fuck up, comic writers, and give me intrigues and violence. Your crazy sexual antics are annoying.

ennis and sex are one of the things that really annoy me about his writing.  the same childish stuff pops up in Preacher which has the net effect of cheapening all of the other, good work he's doing

what's really unfortunate is that i don't recall him having to do this for his Hellblazer runs and he was able to turn out consistently good (if not great) stories all the time.
