"When we came back on the bus, it was visible at the end of the bus he was cutting the guy's head off and pretty much gutting him up," said Caton.
Well, thats one reason to not use Canadian buses anymore. :(
-
I would blame Molson XXX.
-
Manitoba?
This is the province I'm moving to. :o
-
Stupid canucks.
-
Manitoba has the second highest crime rate in Canada, only behind Father Mike's shitty province.
-
According to the story, the victim was a young kid asleep listening to his mp3/cd player. The man just went psycho and stabbed him 50-60 times. Everyone ran off the bus and three guys tried to go back on to check o nthe victim and the guy tried to get at them too.
The attacker ran at them, Caton said, and they ran out of the bus, holding the door shut as he tried to slash at the trio.
When the attacker tried to drive the bus away, the driver disabled the vehicle, Caton said.
"While we were watching the door, he calmly walks up to the front with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us," said Caton.
"They did an awesome thing, holding him in there, because if not, what would have happened?" said Olmstead.
Imagine if he had been able to get off the bus.... or drive it away....
-
Fuck that's chilling
-
Humans :lol :(
-
Would you try to stop a guy wildly swinging a hunting knife in the narrow confines of a bus?

I've jumped into my share of dumb fights. Granted that I was usually drunk and/or one of the trouble makers, but you'd think someone would have some form of weapon with them.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT
-
At least in the US, he would have simply shot the guy. And then decapitated him with a shotgun.
-
OMG, already people defending the guy on the comments on the news site. Then it turned into an argument of pro vs anti capital punishment people. :(

You are a tough one altogetherandrews. ::)

I think the only way I get involved is if I had a gun or a bigger knife. Preferably short sword sized if its a knife. That way if he comes at me i have the reach on him. But the gun would be easier and quicker.
-
WOW
-
Read about it this morning. Pretty crazy stuff. I'll be curious to see if there was any kind of motive, or just somebody completely off their rocker.
-
My grandma told me about this today. She blamed drugs.
Anyways here is what I think happened. The victim probably had a neckbeard. The killer, annoyed with this grotesque sight tried to shave it off while the victim was a sleep. Some other passenger sees the knife and gives a shout which of course causes things to get out of control. Maybe as people are fleeing some one runs into the killer causing his knife to go into the victims chest. Obviously the killer is a child of the internet, as show by his neckbeard hatred. Maybe he realized things weren't good and decided to go out in a blaze of glory, like we all say we would do in our posts. Moral of the story: Malek shave before you go out there.
-
You'd have lost your head with the rest of them.

Well, drunk at least. I used to be pretty big on getting into stupid fights, including ones on buses. But I guess a beheading is a bit different than young adults engaging in consensual fights. Reading the whole article, I suppose some restraint makes sense. Still, it's weird that there weren't more weapons on the bus.
Where is Manitoba anyway?

Guns are good news, basically.

And if the nutter had had a gun instead of a knife?
-
And if the nutter had had a gun instead of a knife?
The victim would have died faster. And then The Predator would have intervened.
Stop fucking up my convenient arguments.

The attacker should have had a gun and the other passengers rockets

This. Or maybe give them Overshields and Shotguns.

Thanks for the update. I'd planned to do that after lunch but you beat me to it.
-
Getting beheaded is one the worst things I can imagine.
-
I forget the specifics, but I could have sworn I once read something about the head staying alive several minutes after a beheading.
-
Presumably, this guy was dead before the actual beheading though. 60 something stabs with a Rambo style knife will do that. Scary shit.
-
I'm pretty sure 50-60 stabs with a rambo knife takes out all major vital organs. So he basically mutilated the body on purpose after killing him.
The scary part is that he was calm and composed the whole time. At least according to the witnesses.
-
This is one of the most frightening news stories I've read in some time. And the kid was only 125 pounds.
The suspect looks like he was beat up.

Chilling stuff. I'm not superstitious in the least but this sounds like demonic possession. How does someone go from completely calm, to stabbing and beheading a sleeping stranger, to totally calm again so quickly? Split personality?

The guy was asian so I'm guessing a colossal hate against otaku.

I forget the specifics, but I could have sworn I once read something about the head staying alive several minutes after a beheading.
some important physics or chemistry scientist who was french, conducted an experiment
way back during French revolution
he was sentenced to be beheaded,
and he told his friends he would blink for as long as possible after being cut. he told them to count how many times we would blink after being beheaded
the number's like 20 or something. not too long, but still creapy
also, this episode in manitoba: it's pretty out there, but i'm not surprised these things happen. i think it's a combination fo pyshological disposition and environmental influences [i.e. what you expereinced throughout the sum of your life]

I used to travel on this exact bus all the time.
Basically, the hospital system/government agencies in Canada will often put mental patients/mentally unstable/ex-convicts on buses to move them from place to place. It's little wonder it doesn't happen more often.
This poor kid, who was from the next town over from mine, more or less, made the all-too-common mistake of trusting his fellow passengers on that bus.
Really? That's interesting. I haven't checked for any updates this morning, but I've been curious about the killer, if he just flat-out snapped, or if he had any history of mental illness. The news (at least what I've seen of it) has been suprisingly light on digging up any details on him so far, aside from his name.
-
Oddly enough, it looks like he was.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/08/01/stabbing-victim.html (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/08/01/stabbing-victim.html)
The man accused of stabbing a young Winnipeg man aboard a Greyhound bus delivered newspapers for several Edmonton publications and had worked at McDonald's, according to one of his employers.
Vince Weiguang Li, 40, worked for a contractor delivering the Edmonton Journal, the National Post and the Edmonton Sun, his boss Vincent Augert told CBC News Friday.
"I'm still kind of shocked and surprised, to be honest with you. He just never came across as the type of person that could do something like that. He was a nice guy," Augert said.
"He was there every day, he did a good job, was friendly and really, we had no problems with this individual at all."
Li worked for the distribution company for about 13 months, but left in April for a short period before returning to the job in June. The Edmonton man also worked at a McDonald's restaurant, according to Augert.
RCMP announced Friday morning that they had charged Li with second-degree murder. Police said he has no previous criminal record.
-
Well, he's a 40 year old paperboy who also works at McDonalds. Either something wasn't right with him from the start, or his life must have gotten fucked somewhere along the line.

OMG, the guy was eating the kid. WTF!!!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25966835/
-
Ugh, just lost my appetite.
-
Makes you wonder now though. I can see this guy in prison looking at some young woman going... Hello Clarrece (sorry if spelled wrong).....
The fact that he never really let his emotions go, was calm while he killed the kid, beheaded him, then ate his flesh, and was taken in by police, makes me think he wants to be like Hannibal.
-
I'm quite sure that's gonna get mentioned. I'm also quite sure this guy is gonna be declared mentally ill by his lawyer to decrease his prison time and increase psychiatric help.

You don't think a person who cuts a strangers head off on a bus and then proceeds to eat him isn't mentally ill? Oh yeah, he's just pretending to get famous ::)

Shit, dude, why are you subjecting yourself to, as it's known in the RCMP, "Dirty 'D'"?
that's rough.
-
What's the 'D?
-
Don't worry Boogie; I'll avoid the northern part of Winnipeg just as I've avoided the female sex these last four painful years.
-
But will the northern part of Winnipeg be as accommodating to your plan as the female sex was?

Originally we didnt know of the cannabalism part. I honestly believed that the guy killed the kid and then cut his head off to get out of prison time and get into a mental ward. Now though, I think hes mentally ill.

:'(
Sorry, duder.

Canada judge: Man not responsible for beheading
A Canadian judge ruled Thursday that a man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a fellow Greyhound bus passenger is not criminally responsible due to mental illness.
The decision means Chinese immigrant Vince Li will be treated in a mental institution instead of going to prison. The family of victim Tim McLean dismissed the trial as a "rubber stamp" that allows Li to get away with murder.
"A crime was still committed here, a murder still occurred," said Carol deDelley, McLean's mother. "There was nobody else on that bus holding a knife, slicing up my child."
The judge said Li should not be held criminally accountable for stabbing McLean dozens of times last July and dismembering his body while horrified passengers fled.
Justice John Scurfield said Li's attack was "grotesque" and "barbaric" but "strongly suggestive of a mental disorder."
"He did not appreciate the actions he committed were morally wrong. He believed he was acting in self-defense," Scurfield said.
Both the prosecution and the defense argued Li can't be held responsible because Li was suffering from schizophrenia and believed God wanted him to kill McLean because the young man was a force of evil.
He will be institutionalized without a criminal record and will be reassessed every year by a mental health review board to determine if he is fit for release into the community.
DeDelley said a yearly hearing is ridiculous, and that Li should be locked up for the rest of his life.
Li's trial barely lasted two days and only heard from two witnesses, both psychiatrists, who testified he is mentally ill. . . .
Police said McLean's body parts were found throughout the bus in plastic bags, and the victim's ear, nose and tongue were found in Li's pocket.
/me shrugs
actus non facit reum nisi mens sit rea
Almost makes me want to go to criminal class tomorrow . . . ALMOST

Canada sounds pretty shitty. I'm glad we havent legalized beheading and cannibalism yet.
-
Canada sounds pretty shitty. I'm glad we havent legalized beheading and cannibalism yet.
America, part of the common law tradition, also requires mens rea on the part of an accused in criminal cases to convict. See Hinckley, who was found not guilty by reason insanity after he shot President Reagan
-
Maybe that guy was really a force of evil that needed to be killed before he assumed his true form as a dragon that would wear our skin and sodomize our eye sockets with a cock of fire and hellish lava.

-
Are the parents allowed to claim that they're insanely angry at the judgment, then kill and eat the crazy guy?
Well, for it to have a prayer, they'd have to kill and eat the crazy guy, THEN claim that they were insanely angry at the time. If they did it with malice aforethought, it wouldn't stand up.
yes, i have no sense of humor
-
a) He's clearly fucking nuts. You couldn't possibly argue mens rea beyond a reasonable doubt.
b) Mental institutions are not Hiltons.
-
I don't think anybody here is saying "he's not crazy." The question is, will the world be safer with this course of justice?
-
He's not going anywhere, so yes.
-
I'd imagine Canadian hardcore mental institutions are as poorly funded as American ones are and are basically prisons anyways.
Plus, I doubt this guy is just gonna get lost in the system as some random patient. He might have a "chance" of re-entering society after a few years but I doubt the review board is gonna be all "oh that guy chopped off that nice kid's head and started to eat him? I remember that. This guy seems like a nice enough chap though..."
Still, lol at gigantor pussies like FoC demanding HARSH JUSTICE, gets me everytime.
-
You can't execute the insane because that's not moral and you can't have him in a regular prison since he is definitely going to try to kill or hurt another inmate. Mental health facilities I'm guessing have to keep the inmates more isolated plus this would his only real chance of getting any treatment.
I don't see why that ruling should surprise anybody. It sounds like people want gansters and the insane getting the exact same punishment.
-
Usually it depends on whether or not they've killed your kid.

What's SK's? :hyper :hyper

http://www.calgaryherald.com/health/killer+Vince+temporary+passes+away+from+secure+ward/6639566/story.html
A man who dismembered a sleeping stranger on a Greyhound bus less than four years ago is about to take his first steps back into the community.
Vince Li, 44, was found not criminally responsible for the July 2008 killing of Tim McLean near Portage la Prairie. A judge later ruled Li was suffering hallucinations from untreated schizophrenia at the time of the unprovoked attack.
The Free Press has confirmed that the Manitoba review board ruled Thursday that Li will be granted temporary passes that will allow him to walk out of the Selkirk Mental Health Centre for visits in the community.
yeeaah, I predict he'll be free as a bird in another couple of years, tops.
Better cross your fingers that he stays "cured"! And don't fall asleep on greyhound busses, kids!

The board that frees him should each be obliged to spend a night alone in his room with him, and take sleeping pills
