Title: Japa-Filter: Tell me about Japanese web design
Post by: GilloD on August 01, 2008, 04:56:41 PM
So, I'md esigning my companies Japanese website. So far, it looks a lot like our American website. But because there's no e-commerce on the Japanese end, I retooled some of the nav bars and generally oriented the site to a more informational, minimal presence. But are there specific challenges to the Japanese market I'm ignoring? Does the Japanese browse websites differently from the rest of the world?
If you guys know of any middle-sized Japanese food companies that have sites, I'd love to take a look. Thanks!

Okay, first of all, you need to remove any CSS or XML you are using and replace it all with nested tables.
If you have any inlined JPGs, be sure to display them at a resolution different than that of the file.
Under no circumstances should an image be larger than 100x80!
Instead of organizing your pages hierarchically, users should navigate via a single list of every page on the entire site. If your site has a lot of pages, reduce the font size of this list until it all fits on the screen.
You may wish to call out important pages with a small banner ad. Put the nine or ten most important of these "call outs" in the rightmost nested table.
Remember: when in doubt, make a list! more information is always better. Users will read the entire page and figure out what they need.
Finally, make sure the site doesn't work with Firefox; ideally, it should redirect Firefox users to download IE 6.0.
Hope these tips help!

Food site examples:
Nissin Foods: http://www.nissinfoods.co.jp/
Ajinomoto: http://www.ajinomoto.co.jp/
House Foods: http://housefoods.jp/
Ito En: http://www.itoen.co.jp/
Morigana: http://www.morinaga.co.jp/index.html
I swear to Jesus H. Christ that I did not look at any of these sites before writing the list above.

:rofl :rofl :rofl Patel and I often have conversations to this effect. It happens any time we've avoided going to a Japanese web site for a while. You never forget - you can't forget - but eventually your mind starts to block out the horrid assault that is Japanese web design. Then after a few months you need to go to a site in Japan to look for some information and you're like OMFGWTMFBBQ JAPANESE WEB DESIGN ATTACK ON MY SENSES.
I love japan as much as the next useless fucking dork but Jesus, they web design like it's 1996. Forever.
And for fuck's sake, never go to a Chinese website. They are like Japanese web sites from 8 years ago (read: all banners and images are made of 8-bit undithered animated gifs, lists of pages where each page is 10 kanji, three columns per site all fully packed with the highest possible information density, etc.). If you have a death wish, you can see this at 17173.
