I'm going to try and make this as innocent as possible, but I'd just like to know why both the press and gamers at large are all looking at Mirror's Edge like it's going to be something amazing. The last time I checked, platforming from the first person perspective has always been highly criticized for not making a lick of sense, and that seemed like the logical way of approaching such matters. In a game where forced perspective prevents you from seeing both your feet, the direction you're moving in, and a safe landing for a gap, I hear platforming doesn't work too well. On top of the game having mediocre art, a nonexistant plot and marginally impressive graphics, what exactly is so great about Mirror's Edge?
And I saw a post here claiming it could be this year's Portal, which is absurd. Both the phrase "this year's Portal" and assuming that Mirror's Edge is introducing anything even remotely new to the genre is a huge stretch.
I'm not baiting, I really want to know why people think, even though platforming in pretty much every FPS hasn't gone by without strict attention thus far, that Mirror's Edge is somehow bringing something new to the table.

because its colorful

I'll give it that, for sure. But Diablo 3 has me covered already...when it comes out in 2010 :'(

well this is why it's getting hype. because it's attempting something previously unproven/untapped.

you can see your feet if you look down, and in this game, many of the moves bring your feet into view. and also, it was a logical direction for most games because most games weren't about the platforming. this game IS ABOUT THE PLATFORMING and doing it in first person is challenging, but more immersive--and if they pull it off, it can be great.
On top of the game having mediocre art
it's probably okay when someone else says it, but bore threw a crybaby fit when i pointed out how fucking lame the enemy designs are. though, i think the environment and main character designs are great.
a nonexistant plot
...? you deliver packages, and of course there'll be a story around that. not surprisingly, they haven't unvieled the entire plot yet.

i agree here. comparing a game to portal is just the rage right now.

if you watch the videos... this game is clearly bringing new things to the table in terms of first person platforming.
also, if someone claims first person platforming can't work--they've obviously not played kz_giantbeanstalk, or any of the other kz_ cs maps.

Just because first person platforming in the past didn't work, it doesn't mean that it won't work. By all accounts and impressions, Mirror's Edge seems to work, and work well. I dig every aspect of the game. The simple style of it, the immense usage of first person during gameplay that is used to simulate vertigo and confusion the character deals with, the speed and inertia based gameplay, and even in some ways the story. The story is the most basic of the basic, but I don't care much. The story seems to give you an excuse to run away from armed men, and I'm fine with that.
And I might have called it 'this year's Portal' at one point, but I don't know why anymore. I don't understand why anything has to be this year's Portal. Braid has totally turned me off that idea.
Oh, and it is made by Dice.

That's probably the most well-written and intelligent response I've ever provoked on this forum in my entire membership. Thank you.
Although I'm still not convinced, I suppose Mirror's Edge deserves its share of controversy over making a previously challenged gameplay element in a genre the main focus of an entire game. I'm out of console gaming anyways, but the amount of attention Mirror's Edge was getting just had me wondering.

Makes sense, but I, personally, am not convinced. The videos don't seem to sell the gameplay very well at all.

Well, I don't know why EB thinks it'll be good. I thought most of the peeps here hated first person platforming. Or was that just for Metroid Prime?

i think its current build that they've demoed is pretty good, but it will definitely be a game that some people "get" and others just don't. you'll have to play, and even move/control your character, differently than other FPS, and some people will have trouble with that. i expect it to be a B game and i expect to have fun with the platforming. to me, it reminds me a bit of assassin's creed in terms of some fan expectations and what i think it'll eventually deliver. i know some people like to jizz all over the place because it's Dice, but i think Dice is one of the most overrated developers in the industry. all the battlefield games have pretty severe flaws (though they were acceptable back with 1942) and i expect this game to deliver on the same level--some nice elements, but a game with big flaws.
-
Definitely makes sense that it'd come out that way.
Personally, there's only one platforming game that fits my every need. I don't even like Nintendo, but Super Mario 64 is far and away the greatest 3D platformer ever created. The controls and animations were brilliant, and finding ways to acrobatically shorten the length of stages brought more satisfaction than most games I've played could hope to provide.
I've only got SM64DS (which completely rapes certain aspects of the original, like making a Very Easy Mode with Luigi), but it works until I can get my hands on an N64 and a copy of that blessed game.
-
Dark Messiah did the first person combat first. And better.
The combat in Dark Messiah was fucking brutal. I loved it. Some of the idle animations for spells and stuff worked really well too.

then i guess it's a good thing mirror edge's entire premise is first person platforming. hence the sliding under bars and scaling walls and large gaps. mirror edge's combat is more secondary and complementary to the main course--the platforming.
edit: you'd have a better argument citing mods like the specialists or any variation on Action quake/hl.

Mirrors Edge COULD be a total failure.
OR be the second coming of Jumping Flash:

admittedly, i had never played jumping flash. so i downloaded it as a PS classic. i don't get the praise that game gets. it was so basic. even in that youtube vid... i do not see why people like it.

WHERE IS THE JUMPING FLASH CREW.
SIGNAL ALL SIRENS.

I'll admit it, I'm entirely entranced by the style of it. Not just the visual presentation, but movement, sound, everything. That said, I have nearly no hope that this will be a good game. DICE to me brings to mind rather buggy games with poor performance and checks written for ambition that execution just can't cash. I'm also not convinced that it will stay interesting, even if the gameplay is as good as one would hope. I'm hoping that I'm wrong though, because it's a very interesting concept.

Basically.
It could be the game that nails the style. Kinda like how Gears did with Killswitch
-
It's odd though, for all the awesome in the motion of the main character, the opponents seem very rigid, almost like mannequins.

Graphics/art style are good and it looks fun. That's...pretty much it, actually.
-
That video of Breakdown wanted me to throw up. What was the budget for that game? $5? Christ.

People like to see something different to the norm and DICE is a good developer. I actually don't find the visual style of the game particularly amazing but the game concept is interesting. I don't see why first person platforming can't work just fine - it has in several games in the past like the Metroid Prime games.

I like the art style and the concept sounds intriguing in theory, hopefully it works in practice.

There was barely any platform-heavy sections of Metroid Prime that wasn't in ball-form. The platforming in Metroid Prime was practically 'guided' for easiness. I having a feeling Mirror's Edge isn't going down that road, hence my skepticism.
