I am so proud of everyone who turned out to Monday's premiere of the film "Tropic Thunder" to protest its unfortunate and humiliating portrayal of people with intellectual disabilities.

Why aren't they protesting Adam Sandler movies then?

Saw it again today. Still holds up on a second viewing.

Definitely tied with TDK for best movie I've seen this year.

I was only vaguely interested in this movie until everyone started protesting. Now I'll probably see it.

From the article:
Quote
Mockery in any form, or for any purpose or directed at anyone, especially those least able to defend themselves, is neither funny nor acceptable.

If I'm reading this sentence correctly, Timothy Shriver believes that mockery is never acceptable, meaning you couldn't even mock KKK members or pedophiles.

That is unless he means the following: Mockery . . . directed at those least able to defend themselves is neither funny nor acceptable. I don't think that's what he means because he used the word "especially."

Saw it. It was pretty good. It gets a little dull and slow in the middle.

Quote from: Douchebag
While I am disappointed that we were not consulted in the same manner as other minority groups depicted in the film and that there are 17 mentions of the "R-word" with one mention of the "N-word," I am grateful to Ms. Snider for listening to the coalition and for taking steps to eliminate some of the film's most offensive marketing elements.

I am also appreciative of her commitment to working in the future for an end to denigrating speech and hurtful portrayals of people with intellectual disabilities in film and in society. DreamWorks and its leaders have a powerful reputation for advancing socially and politically important issues.

1st:  The R-word?  REALLY!??!?  We can't say distinguished mentally-challenged fellow?  A word that actually describes....wait for it....distinguished mentally-challenged PEOPLE?!?!?  smh  douchebag

2nd: :duh :duh :duh  The pussification of America continues.

Go see the movie it's hilarious.

I don't know if it was because it was a wednesday premiere or what but the theater was only about half-full when I saw last night.  Really fun movie to watch though because of all the unpredictable humor (summary of the HD format war, Tom Cruise, gravy).
It was an interesting movie to watch,

it just wasn't very funny at all.
It proved that Jack Black could really be funny.

Here is my review.

Very entertaining, but is a mess.  A very funny mess.  This flick probably won't stand up to repeat viewings, so see it with friends your first time around.

Jack Black does indeed prove he is capable of being funny in a slapstick-type role without being overly obnoxious.

Robert Downey Jr. is fantastic.

Tom Cruise is humorous, but he really didn't sit well with me.  He basically played Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise playing a studio suit.  He was so in on the joke and it felt so forced sometimes that it fell flat at times.

If you're going to make fun of yourself, do it in a way that doesn't feel like you're forcing it.  Tobey Maguire's cameo, which I thought was the funniest thing in the whole damn film, and Jon Voight's were great examples of this.

Also, I felt Nick Nolte was totally misused.  He was kind of irrelevant.

Hot Fuzz is like two movies in one though. You get more bang for your buck! It goes from murder mystery to action comedy!

Shaun > Hot Fuzz

I thought this too after seeing Hot Fuzz, not that Hot Fuzz is a bad movie, it's great.  I just think Shaun is a 10 whereas Hot Fuzz is like a 9.2-9.5.  Tauntaun real talk.

I liked the movie. I don't think it was amazing, best comedy ever, etc, but it was pretty funny overall. The best part of the movie was Robert Downey Jr, who was fantastic. The cameos were also great - Tobey Maguire was awesome. Some parts were inconsistent and dragged for a bit. Overall though, I just didn't really laugh as much as I expected to, even though I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Tobey Maguire really stole the show with his bit, which is surprising considering the stunt casting of Tom Cruise.  I felt Maguire played off his brief cameo a lot better than Cruise, who hammed it up quite a bit.

This is nowhere close to the film Hot Fuzz is, which is one of the best character comedies in recent memory and a great film.  Tropic Thunder is reminiscent of Anchorman, where it seems pretty irreverant and bunch of funny skits cobbled together with a very loose narrative.

The wife and I saw Tropic Thunder earlier today. It was nowhere near Stiller's magnum opus Zoolander, but I liked a lot more than Pineapple Express, this summer's other R-rated comedy.

Zoolander is the best thing Stiller has ever done. I don't think he'll ever be able to top it.

There were some good parts in Pinepple Express, but it just didn't totally click with me. I wonder if the fact that I've never smoked pot is partly why.

Although Hot Fuzz was a good movie, there weren't a lot of laugh-out-loud moments.

Zoolander never quite clicked with me. It was entertaining, sure, but I never found it overly hilarious.  I completely see why people love it so much, the humor just never connected completely with me.

I just laughed a lot more during Pineapple Express. I guess the fact that I have smoked pot might be a little to do with it, but I guess I'm just not that big a Ben Stiller fan.

Also, why all the Hot Fuzz hate here? It was fantastic, one of my favorite movies last year.

Zoolander is great except forward the over-long section toward the end when they're hanging in Hansel's place.  I guess the funny part there is supposed to be the orgy bit but :yawn

I've smoked pot, but I've never really been high, and it was still fucking hilarious and possibly the funniest Apatow film yet.
