BURNOUT PARADISE LAUNCHES ON PLAYSTATION NETWORK

’Year of Paradise’ Heralds Direct to Consumer Revolution as Criterion Games Introduces

PLAYSTATIONŽ3 Trophy System and Motorcycles

Redwood City, CA – Aug 14, 2008 – Criterion Games, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that the Platinum-hit driving game Burnout™ Paradise will be available to download from the US PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork via the PLAYSTATIONŽStore for $29.99 this Fall. Winner of over 55 awards worldwide, the downloadable version of Burnout Paradise will incorporate all of the recent updates that Criterion Games has delivered directly to consumers.

Burnout Paradise offers hours of intense, high action driving in a stunning open-world that can be experienced both in single player and socially online with your friends -- but the fun does not end there. Earlier this year, Criterion Games kicked off ‘The Year of Paradise’ at www.criteriongames.com. The Year of Paradise is a year-long direct-to-consumer program where Criterion Games regularly releases new game-changing downloadable content that is designed to evolve the game beyond its initial retail release. The first update is available now (August), free of charge* through the PLAYSTATION Network and Xbox LIVEŽ Marketplace, and includes three new game modes, new cars and 70 new multi-part challenges, extending the game with hours of new gameplay. The download pack also introduces a live news page where players can track their game progress and find out news on upcoming online multiplayer events. More game-changing downloadable content is coming this Fall for Burnout Paradise, including trophy support and motorcycles free of charge* through the PLAYSTATION Network and Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Fiona Sperry, Studio Manager for Criterion Games said, “Our mission at Criterion is to provide the most entertaining gaming service possible. In order to do that, it’s key that we have the ability to deliver content to players in ways that work for them – through quick and easy download or via traditional bricks and mortar. For us, the fun is in playing the game with friends and constantly discovering new surprises in the world. Download packs with meaningful new gameplay are the perfect way for us to keep entertaining fans and keep them playing, even months after launch.”

so awesome

Will that cut down on load times and things like that? You'd think it would. I'm really loving the support Criterion is giving Burnout Paradise though, that's how all games should be.

Nice.  I like that Sony is moving in this direction, although I think it might be a bit too soon.  I wonder how big it will be?

i don't expect it to be huge, considering it's been out for a while.  but i only rented it, and i may bite for the download version.

And?

It will be 10 times more awesome on PC.

- new graphical features not possible on consoles (new lighting system)
- support of triple-head monitors and 2000x3000 resolutions
- AA, AF etc.
- full HD install but that's a given on any PC game

I know I sound crazy but what is so special about a game being available on PSN?

Fill me in, dfyb?
are you being serious?

edit: didn't know it was even coming to PC.

anyway, it's special because it's one more step toward digital distribution taking over on consoles.

None of that applies to me when I can't run it on my current setup.

Nice, Sony and Criterion making Blu Ray obsolete.

I'll be so glad when DD is the industry standard.

Did you just ran out of pro-Sony threads to post?

On second thought, PC gaming is better than console gaming because of piracy.

You're supposed to be trolling that Digital Distro is the future and Blu-Ray is being phased out

Wicked awesome

Doesn't it interfere pretty heavily with Sony's push of Blu-Ray though?

Wasn't Sony the one championing optical media and MS downplaying them?

In regards to the PS3, Sony has been talking about full downloads for at least as long as they have talked about Blu-Ray.

Yup that's right, Sony sees the writing on the wall. Blu Ray is a stop gap solution on the road to full DD. I kind of regret the few BR discs I've purchased now.

not my concern.

sony's been the best proponent of digital distribution on the console front.

would still need the disc

It's the same price though, $30 at retail or $30 for a download.

This brings you to a tough situation. I've always loved having physical media, but when it comes to the console front having a game downloaded onto your console is more convenient than having to put the disc in the system. There's also a risk of having your PSN or XBL account stolen and losing all the games you purchased. I have SO much money put into my Steam account and it hasn't been stolen yet though, so I'm not too worried about it.

So basically, Blu-Ray is a waste?

Seems like it. You could just see Blu-Ray as being the buffer between disc media to digital downloads. I'd still rather have a movie on Blu-Ray than a digital download of a movie, though.

NO.

I can get a BR burner from LG for $250. One BR 25 GB disc costs $10.

It's starting to get worth backing up media on BR.

I will get that burner for Christmas :D If only DL disks were cheaper :gloomy

Or you could just get a few 1TB Hard Drives for only $155 each. Just think about all the pirated games and videos you could throw on one of those.

It's just plain neat. Being able to quickly launch games without having to worry about discs is hot stuff. I don't have enough HDD space to wish for all games to do this exclusively, but a few frequently played ones? Yeah, it's neat.

fuck $30 movies
Title: Re: Burnout Paradise: to be a downloadable game on PSN!

i don't see why blu-ray would go away anytime soon as a movie format.  DD is still a long ways from replacing discs entirely.  HDTV sales are rising and so is the demand for HD movies.

so far i have 2 blu ray movies (planet earth and bladerunner) and i don't plan on getting any more.  pretty sure i've already matched the number of DVD movies i ever bought :lol.  i rarely watch movies twice--just don't see the point in buying them.
Title: Re: Burnout Paradise: to be a downloadable game on PSN!

yeah, that's another thing - i tend to only buy classic older movies, and those are usually 50/50 between jaw-dropping picture (patton) and eye-watering disappointment (butch cassidy & the sundance kid)

plus, how many times am i gonna watch i am legend - i mean, really
Title: Re: Burnout Paradise: to be a downloadable game on PSN!
Post by: Eel O'Brian on August 14, 2008, 07:47:34 PM
yeah, i like having the disc myself

i would be stuck with condemned 2 forever, at $60, if i'd downloaded it

edit - i would download some games, though, stuff i collect (like WWII games)

when you can cater to the late bloomers on demand? FFS! ::) This is a fun game.

I'm not so sure about that first one.  What else could they do?  The console version already sports high-resolution realtime dynamic shadows for all objects + environment.  I'm not sure what they could bring to the table.

AA and AF were already in both versions of the game, but only 2x AA so that will be nice.  The high resolutions will be a great addition.

The installation really doesn't matter, though.  The original disc version only had loading at startup.  The rest of the game was completely streamed and never presnted a load screen.

I'd love to see the game in ultra widescreen triple-head mode, though.  That would be fucking cool (kind of like the old F355 arcade machine).

I added a large HDD for free.  :D

Is there anyway to open one of those 360 drives (the casing) and add your own yet?  With the new installation options coming up, I know my 20gb drive won't cut it...but I don't want to spend over $100 for a 120gb HDD.  :\

Shut up dcharlie, all this vitriol that you're spewing does not become you. How you can even begin to attempt to justify Microsoft's proprietary hard drive is not only beyond me, but downright laughable. It's not even credible anymore for you to start pigeon-holing it as Sfag trolling. What a cop out if I've ever seen one. Why don't you just sit down, sugar tits?

Anyway, how much autonomy does Criterion actually have in the EA fold? It seems to me that as simultaneous publisher and Xfag, the last thing EA would want to do is shit all over XBL by giving PSN a full Blu-Ray game. I will buy Burnout Paradise on Blu-Ray and PSN just to send Criterion some props. Now we know that the PS3 version of Black 2 is going to shit all over the 360 version.

Maybe that's why dcharlie's so mad. Poor guy.

that is the worst attempt at viralesque sfag trolling i've ever seen!

the big difference you cock sucking closeted ass munches need to realise is the difference between mandatory and optional.

This is just a gaming message board.  I don't know what the hell got into you, but it's not worth getting so upset over shit like this (unless you really ARE joking).  Does anyone really take system wars that seriously?!  It's fun to joke around about it (getting a rise out of someone is good fun), but you sound fucking serious.

...and I was joking around.  I really don't care one way or another.  The cost of 120gb 360 drive is indeed peanuts (though it's also a huge rip-off, but hey, it's a better value than anything Nintendo has ever releas...ah, there's those jokes again).  If I were truly a fanboy, I wouldn't support so many different platforms with my money, but I do.  In all honesty, if you really want to talk seriously about this stuff, I think the XBOX360 is the best gaming platform on the market right now, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to take sides online.  I didn't realize it was such a personal matter to you, so if you are indeed serious forgive me.  I'll refrain from any such remarks in the future.

I'm not a filthy poor but I just don't want to go through the hassle of upgrading the PS3's hd.  Console gaming, for me, is all about plugging in and play.

MS's pricing does suck but their HD designs make a lot more sense for a console.

Damn, dark1x, way to go on and on about picking sides and getting a rise out of someone. And then when you finally get a classic reaction out of somebody, you just back down? And apologize? And hold back trash talking about Nintendo, a company that deserves it the most?

Why don't people on this forum have any teeth? If dcharlie starts hissing at you like a little bitch, you hiss back.

I've met the guy, though, and he's a nice fellow so I was surprised that he lost it.  I suppose once you put a face to a name it's more surprising when you get such a fierce reaction.  I enjoy getting into arguments with people on message boards as it keeps me coming back and posting, but I don't want it to get personal.  I would never ever get into arguments like this with someone in real life.  Heck, of my friends that are gamers, the majority are actually huge Nintendo fans and I enjoy the occasional multiplayer session (even in games that I don't much care for like Mario Kart).

Heated arguments are fun as long as they stay on track, but when they run off in a certain direction, I don't want to take part (unless its demi or someone similar in which case I don't care).  :P

I know that when they were showing off that big ass Blackbird gaming PC a few months back, they called the hard drive swapping system plug and play, and that is basically what the PS3 had.  You don't deal with wires or anything, but there are screws, so I will say that is the most effort you need to put in.

This is a great game, Methodis. And they added a Reset button (for in game tasks) which makes the game less annoying when your running out of shit to do.

How much HD space does it take up, and if you had to choose between this or Midnight Club LA, which is better?

I haven't played MC LA but Burnout Paradise is the best thing you can buy for money at $20.

That's good, because i've been playing Midnight Club LA NONSTOP for the past month and I don't think I could do without a restart.

Does it have an insta-warp like Midnight Club does?

does the dlc on this cost money? I looked at PSN for it but I guess EA has it all in their in-game store. $20 is worth it for the download but I don't want to find myself somehow with like $50 spent on DLC stuff since I have little self-control that area.

All DLC so far is free, the hot potato mode thing and the new island will cost money.

Why the fuck aren't they coming out with the mega edition on consoles in the US? I'd rather get that and save hdd space

it's only like a 3.5 GB download.  i should've looked to see if it has a bigger footprint once installed.  i've played the hell out of this on 360, but for $20, i snagged the superior version.

restarts aren't coming until feb 6.  i know that that is part of a free update.  i'm a little hazy on what will be free and what will cost as far as local MP and car packs.  whenever the island comes out that costs i know.

You have to pay for local MP but I'm pretty sure the throwback cars are free.

Lame, the Ultimate Box is now available as a PSN download but it's still unconfirmed for disc release in the US for either console.

Urgh, I always thought Criterion would release free add-ons for Burnout.

Lame.

There's a free "1.6" update on XBL, and the 800 point  ($10) Party Pack

Already downloaded the 1.6 update. It sucks. Already finished all the events in the game so I don't need a restart/pussy option.

The party add-ons seems to suck too, though. Pay for local multi? lol

Yep, restart function added.
There was a lot of bitching about that.

Picked this up last week after the 1up Yours guys incessant year long jerk off to it finally pushed me over the edge. Gotta admit its a lot better than I anticipated. I dig the discovery bits. Plus, the open races add a ton to each race.

The 1.6 update definitely improved the graphics. It's not immediately obvious, but it's there. Colors are brighter and more vivid. Also the draw distance is better. You can very clearly see White Mountain in the distance. Before I'm pretty sure it wasn't as clearly visible.

I've noticed that too.

Especially the colors have changed. I like the new look much better.

Played the game for about 2 hours today, too. The last time I've played it was during nov 2008 or something like that.
