What the fuck were they thinking?
-
I liked it a lot, more than Tropic Thunder.
-
Yup.
-
uh it was advertised as a stoner flick. why would you go to see it if you weren't stoned and slightly handicapped?
-
I saw it; the movie is crap.
I think Apatow, Rogen, and all those other fucks need to take a year off of movies. They've done so many films in the past 2-3 years that each one is getting worse and worse. I think Rogen has actual potential but he is pissing it away by doing 50+ films a year. If they took a year off and came back with something halfway decent, he might just redeem himself.
Or he could keep making a shitload of disposable, forgettable films and be a DVD on TV star a few years down the road with Wesley Snipes (once he gets out of prison), Seagal, and Van Damme. His choice.
-
it fails as a good stoner flick. which is a pretty flexible genre.
ouch. better or worse than the godawful harold and kumar 2?

On par. Seth Rogen said that fucking Friday is the best stoner movie. Friday's a good stoner movie, but it's far from the best. Best stoner movies:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Big Lebowski
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
Fast Times at Ridgemont High

are
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Big Lebowski
classified as stoner movies? I wouldnt think so, seeing as they are relatively high brow

stoner =/= low budget and bad writing
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is like a bible to any drugee-in-training. The mix of insane acid-trippy visuals and pothead philosophy is perfect, and the movie itself is damn near an art piece.
The Big Lebowski has the kind of disjointed and complicated plot that seeing unfold while stoned is always fun, because of how broken and jangled it is. Also, listening to John Goodman drag out every trivial topic into a whole scene while high is a beautiful thing.

I'd replace Fast Times with Dazed and Confused. Fast Times has one stoner character out of an ensemble cast. Fast Times is also basically a dramedy, which don't fly when you're stoned.
-
the movie was made like 2 years ago, but only released now.
-
Saw it and loved it, so there.
me too
-
Friday is a LOT better than Harold and Kumar, which is fantastic as well.
Friday and Up in Smoke are the two best stoner comedies.
Friday's supporting cast plus Chris Tucker's best role ever easily outdistance that which is in H and K, and Friday is more quotable and rewatcheable as well.
And you know this. Maaaaaan.
edit: I'm gonna wait until cable to see this, my stoner buddy said it was subpar as well. Although he's not a huge Apatow fan, he said H and K 2 was a little better. To be fair to the franchises, H and K 2 is a lot better than Next Friday, although that's not saying a whole lot.

half-baked wasn't bad, either
-
I've only seen it once, when I was sober, and I went into it with way-too high expectations I guess. I'd give it another shot but I have to say I wasn't a fan. I liked Grandma's Boy better :-\
-
half-baked wasn't bad, either
Bob Saget said that he sucked dick for coke. :-*
You guys all fucking fail, Express was the best film of this summer, and you never argue over a movie with Huey Lewis and the News doing the title song.
-
that's kinda how i felt about superbad
-
Fuck I hated Superbad with a passion.

you're right, it must automatically suck

Superbad is a bunch of funny jokes pieced together horribly IMO.
I even love the movie. But man there is so much shit wrong with the pacing and story. The whole second half falls flat except for...
Hey! McMuffin!
-
"Is there a fucking rancor in there?" :lol :lol :lol :lol

The AV Club: Do you think of Pineapple Express as a stoner film?
Seth Rogen: I've gotta say I kind of don't. I think of it as a movie about stoners. But to me, when you say "a stoner movie," I picture something that only people who smoke weed like, like a Cheech and Chong movie, or something in that vein. Movies like The Big Lebowski and Dazed And Confused, I don't really consider them stoner movies. I just consider them movies about people who smoke weed. That's because those are movies that have managed to kind of wiggle their way out of that category and found an audience beyond just those people.
AVC: It seems like stoner movies get ghettoized.
SR: Yeah, I think so, definitely. But I will say, I think it's their own fault. If you watch Half Baked—I love that movie, but it doesn't really function as an actual movie. If you took the weed away, it really wouldn't be about much. I think that's the difference between, hopefully, what we're trying to do and some of these other movies.

Its just so... not funny. Like, you can tell it was written in high school - the whole thing is so crude and amateurish. I might have enjoyed it more if I were still 15, but at 25, I hated it. And I wanted to punch Jonah Hill in the face whenever he spoke, which was far too often.
The only decent stuff was McLovin w/the cops.

Maybe because I'm still 22, but I found most of the jokes absolutely hilarious. It's just that it falls apart as an actual movie for me and especially after repeated viewings.
-
Of the Apatow-umbrella comedies, I still enjoy 40YOV the most. It does hold up pretty well on repeated viewings.
-
Knocked Up and 40YOV switch places for me regularly. I love them both.
Is Forgetting Sarah Marshall considered an Apatow-crew flick? I know his name is attached it to it in some form (Executive Producer probably?). But I love that one as well. Great, great movie.
-
I think so. I believe Apatow's actual films are 40Y0V and Knocked Up, and then he produced Superbad, Sarah Marshall, and PE.
I think.

Agreed.
At 21, I didn't enjoy the humor either. It felt too high school, it almost made me cringe.

The Cera/Hill portion of Superbad has a nostalgic "oh man, we were so completely fucking distinguished mentally-challenged in high school" aesthetic that I found somewhat appealing. It's a topic that teen comedies have beaten to death, but rarely do in such an honest way.
-
I was really drunk when I watched Superbad and don't remember much about the movie. But I do remember laughing a lot.
-
I went and saw Superbad with a bunch of friends at a drive-in. It was hot and everyone was drunk and having a good time, which made the movie for me. Actually I went and saw Pineapple Express the same way, so it must have been really awful. The whole Rambo bit at the end was enough to kill any film.
So wait a minute, did you hate Hot Fuzz then?

Indeed. True story: summer between junior and senior year of HS, we went out to see a midnight showing of Pulp Fiction at the dollar theater in Atlanta. But since it was Thursday, there were no fucking midnight showings. So me and my two friends were trying to think of something to do, and Mark said "well, we could drive to Tennessee". So we did, for no discernible reason. Across the border, got some more gas and some chili cheese Krystals, then drove home. HS was lame like that.
-
Yeah, and it was fine just driving around to nowhere because gas wasn't OVER 4 DOLLARS A GALLON.
-

Haha, yeah that shit was less than a dollar back then. I wish I could just continually relive my high school days. I know lots of people hated that time in their lives, but for me it was pretty dope. I don't know if I had everything figured out back then or if it was just a case of blissful ignorance allowing me to be more confident, but after HS everything went into a downward spiral of suck.
-
I know how you feel. :-\
