Good thing nobody actually gives a fuck and two weeks from now i'll never hear the name again.
-
Agreed. Hope he gets run over by a rickshaw on his way to the airport.
-
I'm so sick of the Michael Phelps love. I respect that he's a pretty great swimmer, but please let there be some talk of the Olympics without mention of Phelps.
-
Ah. In Japan, the tv coverage is skewed so badly to the local heroes that there was barely any mention of Phelps' 8th medal during the 4x100m coverage - Japan's bronze success was the main focus. Much like PS3 coverage on gaf, really.
-
He doesn't even need to get run over. Nobody will give a fuck in a few weeks, because no one actually cares for swimming.
No something must happen to him. That will show him for being an American instead of a Canadian and not doing anything for us! That jerk.
-
you fuckin commie
-
No one actually cares about any sport, but they watch to see someone, or some team, become the best of the best. People need a figure to be seen as the best to validate their worth and consider themselves 'Number 2' to this guy's 'Number 1'.
-
I also hate people who excel.
Did you think that NBC wouldn't be hyping an American Olympian who broke seven world records and won eight gold medals during the Olympics, which cost them close to a billion dollars in rights fees.
Even in Canada, he's receiving a lot of attention.

Beats hearing about Brett Favre

malek is a big pussy.
I don't think so. If he was he wouldn't mope so much over women as he would be content just fucking himself.
-
Michael Phelps Fred Phelps
Hmmm Are They Brothers
-
Phelps was a picked on weird looking guy who swam to be accepted. I think I would've respected him more if just went Columbine.
-
you're just a hater
hatehatehate

Beats hearing about Brett Favre
Heh, I was gonna say something like...
Michael Phelps : Olympics :: Brett Favre : NFL
I'm sick of hearing about Phelps too. IMO what Bolt did in the 100m was much more impressive than any individual thing Phelps did. However, Phelps' overall accomplishment is amazing. That said, only a swimmer could ever have the 'most gold' record, because no other event has even close to the amount of events. I realize there are different strokes (duh) and not every swimmer dominates at every stroke, but it's routine to see swimmers swin in 4-5 events every Olympics. If you're the best shotputter ever, you'd never get 1/100th of the run that Phelps does, if you excelled at discus too that would mean at best you could win about 8 golds (2 each events for four Olympics.)
Swimming spams the medals and that has to be taken into the equation of 'OMG 8 golds!'
-
So Phelps is basically a really good nade spammer.
-
Anyone else feel that it's become increasingly difficult to take this seriously? Either immediately, or in a few years when detection kits have caught up with cloaked "steroid" usage, these Olympic champions will probably be stripped of their medals. Too many scandals due to far too much commercial interest.
Oh yeah, and what the hell was up with the American dude sprinting in his shades? When he was running around with the flag after the sprint, he looked like a pro wrestler or some such.
-
A Reuters article earlier this week was theorizing Phelps could turn this into a $1 billion pay off over the next 50 years.
-
Phelps got his DUI where I went to college.

I was wondering that myself, and I also wonder if that hair style would have effected performance.
Whatever, American runners have the best names. Tyson Gay and Walter Dix will outrun everyone.

Who cares? He lost to Jamaica and Trinidad. :lol

So? Canada is in 25 different sports, and they only have 2 golds.

I don't know if this is directed at Phelps, but didn't he volunteer for the new steroid detection program that looks for changes in body chemistry instead of for chemicals? I doubt he's on 'roids

Yeah, he actually volunteered himself for more rigorous blood and urine testing. I think they can even retest the blood and urine at a later date when they have better testing.
He has an advantage, but it's a genetic advantage: He has big a wingspan, large torso and big feet, and his ankles and elbows are double-jointed.
-
What the fuck is up with this guy? There's this commercial or whatever with one of his psycho bitch fans screaming about not getting to meet him or something.
Dude, he isn't good looking. He'll be forgotten as soon as the Olympics are over.
-

Probably not. 65 milliion Americans tuned in just to watch him.

Yeah, he was constructed to swim fast. It all fits so perfectly. Phelps is awesome.

I was age champion at swimming at primary school. I could've been a champion if I didn't turn into a lazy teenage bum :-\

:bow Usain Bolt :bow2
In my eyes, Bolt stole the show. The US media won't talk about it, but he has given the most dominant display of athleticism in these Olympics far as I'm concerned.
Just imagine if they had 100 meter hop, 100 meter skip, 100 meter jump-skip,...Bolt would have as many medals as Phelps.
I'm just glad that swimming is over and done with so I don't have to hear about it any more. Phelps will come home, get a few talk show appearances, and for the rest of his career, he will probably sell out tournaments and draw gigantic crowds wherever he swims...but at the end of the day, nobody outside of enthusiast are going to give a fuck about this cat until 2012.

What the fuck is with the green text? If you're going to be a cute joke character, put a little effort into it. smh.
I'm not a joke character, just like posting in color. No need to be bitter about it.
-
I like the coloured text - it makes it easy to spot which posts to skip

Quick someone invent the 110 metre hurdles.
Wait. . . .

It's not really directed at any one individual athlete (and I don't think Phelps here is guilty of it), but rather the whole Olympic Games spectacle. It has taken a serious hit especially since the Ben Johnson deal, and it's just difficult to feel much excitement about the event results these days. I'd argue that this is why there's been so relatively little in the way of fanfare for Bolt. Well, it's between that and the overbearing commercial aspect of the games. It's all about getting lucrative sponsorship deals these days, and ads are plastered all over the game. Granted that this is nothing new, but when you combine this with the doping scandals in the past, it becomes something pretty ugly.

Beats hearing about Brett Favre
AMEN HALLELUJAH
Seriously, I would rather hear about someone actually being successful in his sport instead of someone coming back to play even more mediocre seasons as a "great" QB.
And I'm a Packers fan.
