I was cooking a chicken breast in the oven while watching the Olympics and I heard it make a strange zapping sound (the best comparison I can think of is the sound of the Martian heat-ray in the War of the Worlds remake) and I saw yellow/white light flicker through the oven window. I heard a small pop and smoke starting going up through the right rear burner (there are four burners). All of this happened in the span of five seconds and somewhere in between I jumped out of my chair, turned the oven off, and turned the oven fan on so my smoke detector wouldn't go off. That burner was clean (the oven itself is relatively clean) because it's very rarely used (that particular burner is rarely used; I use the oven every day).
So my questions are:
1. What the fuck happened?
2. Is it safe to turn my oven back on?
3. Is it safe to eat whatever was in the oven (in this case, a chicken breast) after the incident?

your chicken breast was invaded by aliens.

Eat the chicken - sounds like the oven is borked.
Thank goodness the food is alright.

Ovens have a lot of silly electrics these days. They also produce a lot of heat. If some insulation falls off or a wire gets where it aint supposta, it's easy for you to have some fried cabling. Call a pro.

Did you remember to kill the chicken first

prolly static electricity from your electric chicken
