As I said on GAF, this is the kind of game that would have been AMAZING if Sega made it during the Dreamcast days.

And I'm sorry, but this game will NEVER be localized by Nintendo of America.

That was actually the work of a former S-E scenario writer, Kazushige Nojima. He first wrote a silly non-plot about how it was just going to be a bunch of videogame characters going to a stadium to beat each other up, but Sakurai wanted something "epic" because Nojima's past credits included such serious and intelligent works as FFVII, VIII, X, X-2, and the Kingdom Hearts games.

Imagine a group of 2-3 characters running forward with a determined look, stopping at the sight of bad guys, then nodding to each other and making gestures without ever actually saying a word (even the characters who are perfectly capable of speech). Every now and then another character will suddenly appear out of the blue in a dramatic entrance and then immediately start helping the others without any kind of communication.

But it did have that awesome aerial battle near the end.
