Nothing like introducing a more expensive sku to make an already expensive console more palatable

that's a product of 16 bit rendering, so no, a new screen wouldn't help with that

Crap, I just got the red PSP.  >:(

I'll be really pissed of the new model turns out to be hackable as well.

That $650 PS3 is ridiculous though.  No one is going to want it.

Sony just doesn't seem to get it.  They keep moving in the wrong direction with price, this gen is so twilight zone.

That is what I am hoping for.  Ghosting on the PSP is horrible.

I also hope it isn't so damn expensive over here.

I want to buy a PSP soon.

Is it worth waiting for the 3000 model?

If ghosting really is gone, then yes.

As much as I hate playing PSP in a boxed off window on my TV, it at least showed the potential of how sharp the game could look.  The PSP screen right now makes things look smeared and all that.

Not much different in terms of looks.  Mainly the edges and now rounded, there is a mic next to the PSP logo, and instead of saying 'home' on the button, it has the PS logo.

If they're going to come up with a new revision so quickly, they need to do more than just add a brighter LCD.

Make the screen less scratchable as well so gamers don't have to attach image quality decreasing screen protectors.    I love my Zune's unscratchable, glass screen.

did they not pay attention to the gasps from the audience when they first announced the $600 price tag

That's good but an unscratchable screen would still be more handy.  I usually turn on my PSP when I'm in bed.

They announced the 160 gig for America:

Quote
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune PS3 Bundle with 160GB PS3 System

The 160GB PS3 system announced at the GC will be available here as part of a new limited-edition bundle that includes the hardware, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune game, a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller. We’re hearing from a lot of you that more PS3 storage space is important, particularly since the launch of our video delivery service, and this new model delivers more memory and a whole lot of content packed-in. The 160GB PS3 has all of the same functionality as the new 80GB PS3 that’s popping up on retailer shelves now, but obviously has twice the HDD space, so you can build levels to your heart’s content in LittleBigPlanet, download a ton of videos, and still have room for your entire music collection. The Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune 160GB PS3 bundle launches in November for $499.99 (MSRP).

$500 with Uncharted.

New PSP is same price for America, so $170 alone, $200 in bundle.  The bundle also now comes with a 4 gig memory stick and Ratchet Size Matters.

My watch has a sapphire glass and it DOESN'T FUCKING scratch.  After 5 years of usage I have exactly 0 scratches on the glass while the metal band is scratched as hell.

I suppose handhelds don't incorporate sapphire glass screens, do they?

Don't know what material the Zune screen is made of but it's unscratchable as well.

Sorry for the confusion then.

I just want a black one now since I made the mistake of getting the silver glitter one with the slim.  Hopefully the standalone one is black.

Oh, and some more info on the PS3 Uncharted Bundle:

Quote
-- PAIN PLAYSTATION Network Voucher* -- PAIN boldly tackles a rarely explored area of video-gaming ... comedy. The unique mechanic of the game allows the player to load a character into a human-sized, ultra-powerful slingshot, and fire the character into an active, physics-controlled environment, filled with precarious and humorous situations. Download PAIN from PLAYSTATION Store (http://store.playstation.com) to your PS3 system with the included voucher.

You get Pain for free. TOTALLYW ORTH IT NOW

Warhawk™: Operation: Fallen Star expansion pack
The third expansion pack for mighty online warfare title Warhawk, Operation: Fallen Star introduces the remote, forested Tau Crater – the site of a crashed Chernovan warship containing invaluable experimental technology. With the Chernovans trying desperately to salvage the ship, the Eucadians have arrived with a view to stealing it for themselves. This pack brings ten new battlefields to the Warhawk experience – as well as the Infantry Jetpack – a personal rocket pack that allows soldiers to soar above the fray of battle into the aerial realm of the Warhawks themselves.

I'm generally a sucker and will buy hardware updates, but uh...this doesn't seem like enough to bother with this time around.  Guess I need to see some screens of what makes the screen better.

I wonder if the real reason this is coming out is because they found some new way to prevent them from being moddable?

Ps3 : i think what sony fans fail to grasp is that when Sony are "we are working on bringing the cost of components down" this means "phew, thank god for that, we can now finally make some profits off this damned thing" not "$299 PS3 in a few months! We loves to bleed for ya!"

i think the placement of the keyboard is fine.  fits the DS3's design better.  if it were on the bottom, it would have to be even farther downward because of the analog sticks.  and if you actually hold a controller and try it out, it feels fine to move your thumbs up there as if you were typing.

i don't see them doing it for another year or so, until there's nothing but shovelware support for the ps2

right now a few big games still come out for it

i'd probably buy a few games that way

i have a 60 gig, but if it ever shits the bed down the line i might be screwed

if they got the emulation working across the board, it would be pretty easy money to slap an iso (or whatever) on psn

everyone hoping they "upgrade" the titles in any way is in for disappointment, though

i cant believe you can easily reach those numbers with thumbs.

how does the mouse touch pad thing work? that sounds cool.

Basically the entire keyboard unit itself is touch sensitive, so rubbing your finger along it is the same as a laptop touch pad, just bumpy.

The only real way I see it working is by using one hand to hold the controller, and one to type.  That is still a worse solution than the 360 one.

i'd probably buy a few games that way

i have a 60 gig, but if it ever shits the bed down the line i might be screwed

You can always upgrade your hard drive.  Mine is about 200 gigs free right now (194 after tomorrow) and I had a launch 60 gig unit.

I think PS2 download service would be great if it has reasonable prices.  Main thing I would want is Japanese PS2 games to work on my NA console; I would actually be willing to rebuy the digital version as long as I can play them.

well, given the painfully slow approach to PS1 classics under PSN outside of Japan, i am inclined to be sceptical.

It should be easy dollars, but there doesn't seem to be any urgency.

i think the situation there is partially due to ps3 being a whole generation removed from PS1 - and don't they also have to tinker with some of the games to get them running well on PSP?

These high priced SKUs only deter regular Joes from buying the 'shit' model even though they don't have the extra bucks for the 'better' model. I thought Sony had finally found their way through the woods on this subject.

Another new feature on the new PSP I just found out is that video out supports both HDTVs and SDTVs now for gameplay.

Quote
Video-Out has also been enhanced, with the system now able to interlace for televisions that don't support a progressive output (that means non-HDTVs).

That's how it should have been in the first place!  Still not enough of a reason to upgrade though.

Not true!

The PS1 emulator by fans ran at like 2 fps on the PSP, so Sony was nice enough to provide their own PS1 emulator for the community to crack.  On their own they are nothing, but together they are everything.

i'm trying to imagine using the keyboard - erm... can you actually user it whilst holding the controller?!

seems like thumb usage would be straight out.

You hold the controller normally, and type with your nose, or other protrusion.

As for the merit “of PSP-3000”, it could add to display improvement, being clear with the improvement of contrast, and the actualization of wide color gamut besides the fact that it can draw natural image, we raised also speed of response, the drawing whose being off-center is little became possible. In addition, you say that by the fact that reflected decrease technology is adopted it has become easy to see even at the bright place. As for size of display differing from so far 4.3 inches.

This is bablefish translated, so if anyone who reads Japanese can confirm, I will begin to get really excited.

it'll be in pspupdates.qj.net somewhere - it's a firmware plug in i think.

Can't find anything other than news of a release for this support (for coders) from last year.  Is it part of the firmware now?

Hmmm...it's not that great though.  Doesn't seem to run in 480p, so the games look like shit.  Emulators don't seem to benefit from the speed boost.

BUT I can't wait to mess around with this on an SDTV.

And more reason why PSP-3000 is worth it.

I hope that increased contrast is not just due to new LCD but also a glass screen.  Also, why won't Sony change the analog stick more dratiscally?  Every PSP owner I know thinks the nub sucks.

The picture is from Famitsu.  And the different from the old PSP to the slim is hardly any for the screen.

Yeah, I would have liked it to be closer to the screen so I didn't have to cramp my thumb to use it, or even just a redesign of it to make it like the Tapwave Zodiac.  I mean, they did fix the D-pad, so I don't get why they aren't fixing the nub.

This pic is weird.  The old PSP actually looks a little bit more natural despite being less vibrant.

Hopefully, the enhanced contrast is not due to some bullshit, dynamic contrast enhancer.  I hate that crap on TVs and always turn it off.

A 2nd analog nub would not make for a consistent control scheme across their SKUs; nobody'd design a game with it meaningfully used, because it'd only sell to the subset with the 2nd nub.

Wouldn't that be admitting that the PSP is a port machine?

I'm only being half snarky; seriously, the PSP is supposedly it's own little dreadnought of joy, and ports of PS2 stuff were pooh-pooh'd at the outset. Now I'm suspecting that Sony's happy if people develop for it at all, which doesn't make any sense to me -- doesn't it have half the audience of the monstrously successful DS?

In Japan, PSP seems to the machine which is finally waking people up to network gaming. The hook seems to be that it's less threatening to play with people in the same room as you - all the ads for Monster Hunter etc show happy people in various social situations whipping out their PSPs for a lengthy epic loot raid. All is co-op, all is "no, no, YOU take the armour".

A second nub that can change function between D-pad control, left nub, or face buttons would already be a tremendous help.  I am actually still waiting for consoles/handhelds to give you the option to change controls based in the hardware menu to how you want, basically like how a PC does it.

Someone already hacked his PSP to do something similar.

While it does look a bit awkward since there is no sensitivity for aiming, they can get around it by having new games support both this and the old method; or if you can customize controls, just do it the whole Turok method, except make it so that the left nub is replaced with button controls and the right nub has the functions of the left nub.

A few choice quotes:

Quote
The response time has doubled in speed and will help eliminate ghosting or blurring during gameplay and video playback.
Quote
The vivid, ghost-free screen does draw more power than the old screen. John Koller, Sony director of hardware marketing told GameSpot that the new screen will reduce battery life by "about 20 minutes."

Quote
The silver PSP will be available first, on October 14, 2008, in a $199 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack. The package will include a silver PSP-3000, a Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters UMD game, a National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets UMD movie, a PlayStation Network download voucher for Echochrome, and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. The black PSP will ship in November in a $199 PSP 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack that includes the black PSP-3000, a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, and a PlayStation Network download voucher for Everyday Shooter. The black PSP-3000 will also make it into the basic PSP Core Pack, priced at $169, sometime later this year.

It is lame that they are releasing the silver one before the black one again.  I will wait this time around.

There is a video, but it is hard to tell if anything is really changed based on the quality and content they showed (CG stuff from Crisis Core)

There is also some rumor going around that this new PSP will also let you play with the DS3 controller...yeah, I think it will be bogus.
