James actually sounds good, the chorus is good, solo work is nice...the bridge is horrible though, and some of the riffs are just rambling with nothing interesting happening. Overall it's ok - better than St. Anger obviously

Wow, you were not lying. That almost kills the song. They sound alright; I'm glad the long riffs and solos are back, and it doesn't sound like Lars is banging on trash cans anymore. Hetfield's voice sounds kinda nasally or something. But yeah, definitely better than St. Anger.

I honestly completely forgot this album was coming out so soon.

Haven't they been a bit too loud for some time now? I distinctly remember thinking they were too loud on the Black Album.

No, he was drinking A LOT during the Load, Re-Load days so no more of that please. :wag It's half decent because they're a whole band and they have Rubin. If this was another Bob Rock album it'd suck major donkey dick. This will probably just suck minor donkey dick....listening to it right now and WTF at that I want to be One bridge. The build is too slow, and when it does finally break and get faster, it just kind of sounds like an imitation of Justice Metallica. And I don't know if it's over-produced or not, but the song just lacks any energy. Hetfield sounds like he's doing a subpar, kinda bored Hetfield impersonation, and even when the song rocks out, it's just kinda eh.

To me, this seems like Re-Re-Load. Which is a dramatic improvement from St. Anger but in the end, it is still their shadow of their former selves. Kill Em All to Self Titled still are the only Metallica albums worth buying. The good news is that they made a dramatic departure from St. Anger which means their next album could be a classic return to form, if only for an album or two more before they hang it up.

I'll probably download this.

The radio used to play Black Album stuff 24/7, and through Midnight Metallica I wound up hearing much of their early stuff, eventually resulting in me buying their first three albums. They've got plenty of good melodic songs but sometimes James seems to step too far out of his abilities as a singer/songwriter. That bridge is an example

Listened to it, nothing overwhelms me. Maybe I'll check out the rest of the album when I can be bothered to look up the song titles then plug them into youtube.

That Was Just Your Life - This I liked. Pretty solid. Probably my second favorite song on here.

The End of the Line - Decent riff and solos ruined by Hetfield's shit lyrics. "The slave becomes the master?" Seriously? Worst line on the album. Also lots of stretched out filler in the second half. Not completely awful but not good either

All Nightmare Long - Fine until the last solo that ends around 5:20. They could have done an outro there and finished and it would have been an okay song. Instead they again tack on an extra two minutes of virtually nothing except the same recycled riff. This is becoming a trend.

Broken Beaten and Scarred - Garbage except for the last two and a half minutes when Hetfield stops wailing his cliched hook and you get to hear some classic thrash

The Day that Never Comes - Sounds like a band pretending to be Metallica

Cyanide - Complete and total shit

Unforgiven III - Sounds like something straight off of (Re)load. The awesome solo at the last two minutes doesn't save the song, and I can't seem to get it out of my head that I'm listening to UNFORGIVEN FUCKING III WTF JAMES

Judas Kiss - Easily the best song on the album.

Suicide and Redemption - Probably could have shaped up to be a decent song if they cut down the length. This track represents everything wrong with the length of the songs on the album. I'm all for long thrash a la And Justice For All, but nearly every song on here seems like they tried to engorge it with simple, repetitive riffs that just drift along. Hammett can still play but I think they tried to hard to separate themselves from the disaster of St. Anger and overdid the whole epic song thing

My Apocalypse - This is decent overall but it's especially apparent on this one that Hetfield's voice just can't carry the song anymore. You can seriously hear him straining on some lines.

Biggest problem on this album is probably Hetfield. Cringe-worthy lyrics, and vocals that make me want to turn the CD off and go listen to old Metallica. The direction of some of the songs also just sounds like they never know where they are going anymore

Except for St. Anger and most of Reload, Metallica >>>>> Megadeth, and it's not even close. Even Rust in Peace isn't as good as Metallica's first 5 albums, or even Load, to be honest.
