Hillary has like a fourty man goon squad going around to keep order among her delegates. I doubt there will be any dissent in the matter on the convention floor.

I'll listen to the speeches at night but I'm not too enthused. I still have a hard time getting excited about Obama.

Hope she can keep them in-line and they dont see the floor vote as some 'last chance' bullshit

I read that some 80% of ALL the delegates are planning to vote Obama at this point. It's not an issue.
Title: Re: Evilbore Democratic National Convention Thread
Post by: Phoenix Dark on August 25, 2008, 12:28:03 PM
her delegates should be able to vote however they want - at the end of the day Obama will get the nomination. She has many female delegates who want to vote for her, not because they want to stir trouble but because this is an opportunity they've waited their entire life for. I don't think we can possibly comprehend just how important that is to some women. The same would be true of Obama's delegates if he had lost - there would be many black delegates who'd do the same thing.

Showing unity at the DNC is essential to winning in November. Last thing we need is the undecideds looking at the "decideds" and thinking we're "undecideds" as well and voting for McCain cause half of them arent rallying around Huck.

Agreed.  Unity is essential.  Even Hillary knows this and probably told her delegates to switch to Obama.

Deer in headlights.

Pelosi is good only for photo ops.  The shining moments of per position was the first two months where she just went around and smiled with other Democrats and a few Republicans.  It all went downhill from there.  My moment when I knew she was shit was when she went to Syria.  That and the several instances of her incompetency.

She is a woman and the face of the 2006-2008 congress but when push comes to shove, she doesn't deliver.

What I find funny is people (in the larger sense) talk about the slavering coverage of Obama as a critique of Obama, and not the press in general.

It ends up hurting him because 1. the focus encourages coverage fatigue in viewers, 2. the attention means every thing he does is under more scrutiny than is warranted, and 3. while McCain is under-reported, so are his failings, gaffes, etc.

I really like this guy. I genuinely want him to lead me. He seems like a smart, well intentioned dude. As opposed to McCain who is busy purchasing Dr. Robotnik's Evil Drilling Machines at an estate sale.

I've spent a lot of time doing research on the candidates and siding with Obama because, hey, let's try something different. But now I want to vote for him because I like him. I genuinely like him and I'd be proud to have a dude like that repp'ing my country.

The McCain camp responds:

"If Senator Obama is willing to let roving bands of black youths onto the stage at the Democratic Convention, just imagine what our cities will look like if he is elected. There were certainly no roving bands of black youths in the POW camp where Senator McCain was imprisoned and held for 5 1/2 years."

What I find funny is people (in the larger sense) talk about the slavering coverage of Obama as a critique of Obama, and not the press in general.

It's meant to reflect the hidden truth that he's a charismatic lightweight who has had his successes handed to him by a biased media.  It's basically the same meme as the "he's such a great orator that he must be dumb" one that Synth Patel brought up a while ago.

Completely silly of course.

It's basically the same meme as the "he's such a great orator that he must be dumb" one that Synth Patel brought up a while ago.

Who says that though?  I can understand, "he's such a great orator it doesn't matter what he's saying people eat it up regardless," or, "he's great with prepared remarks but can't speak on his toes," but I don't think I've seen your idea bandied about.  I think even if you call him a political lightweight it doesn't preclude the man from being personally intelligent.

Well of course he has speech writers.  Everyone does.  Thing is, Obama actually works with his speech writers all the time.  So that's usually genuinely him talking, not somebody else.

And you're like only the third person I've met who doesn't like Biden.

He's not perfect.  Just like Obama's not perfect.  But regardless, he's only the VP.  I really don't think the VP is going to play a main role as much as Cheney did in the next administration.  Biden was chosen strictly as a political advantage to try and sway a certain demographic, that's all.
Title: Re: Evilbore Democratic National Convention Thread

I think on the contrary he will be a strong, Cheney-like VP, which is a trend I really don't like.  VP should be a shameful, depressing position of irrelevance and boredom.

I don't give a shit if Biden comes from Thomas Jefferson's jungle fever stricken bloodline or not.

That man did not run in any primary. He did not get a single vote for the executive election in any race whatsoever, period.

He comes from Delaware. WTF kind of influence does his state have on America and in the Congress, anyway? Those hippies should form a new nation with Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and maybe even Connecticut. We have no room in America for city-states, unless you're called New York City, thank you very much.

And yet, Obama picks Biden in favor of Hilary Clinton because Obama just got made the political machine's bitch.

People don't give a shit about middle class appeal.

Obama didn't win Iowa because of middle class appeal.

He won that racist state because that's how sick and tired they are of the GOP's fuck ups.

It's basically the same meme as the "he's such a great orator that he must be dumb" one that Synth Patel brought up a while ago.

Who says that though?

To clarify, "is dumb" in my post stands in for "has no substance" and its variants.  Sorry for the phrasing.

It's a popular meme and not a stock one used to attack liberals (unlike the elitist and traitor labels which have long precedents).  Seems to me that it has a lot to do with Obama's success and his presentation.

People see a relatively good looking young man performing on stage in front of thousands of adoring young admirers and they naturally go to their archetype of an entertainer.  From there it's intuitive to dismiss him as empty and his supporters as faddists and naifs.

Most or all of the people who say this stuff about Obama are not terribly informed about policy themselves so I figure they're going off a gut feeling.

Why are you guys getting riled up over these bullshit attacks?  This is election time.  Stuff that would have been laughed off any other time is now used as fodder for attack.  Of course, a lot of Americans lap this shit up and 2008 isn't shaping up to be any different.  It is why I have the TV turned off until November 3rd.

Because its hard to believe anyone can say this shit.

Yeah but these days, it is a given.  Americans these days claim to hate these bullshit attacks but they can't stop talking about them.  Which is why they keep getting shown.

One of my favorite books I read recently was Nixonland.  The book talked about these kinds of attacks and how the purpose was not even legitimacy but to get the opposition tangled up in it.  The Southern Strategy of 1968 is still alive and well 40 years later.  I recommend the read because McCain is continuing the GOP legacy that Nixon and Goldwater helped to establish.

You know something like that isn't true when EVERY SINGLE GOP OPERATIVE says it.  For all she's well liked by a majority of Democrats, a majority of Americans (all Republicans and most Independents) still don't like her and putting her on the ticket would have only mobilized them.  Plus, the double minority dip ticket isn't gonna work any time soon.

Amazing speech. She did everything she needed to do, her passion was evident in her voice and gestures, and she made the best possible case to her holdout supporters. Her attacks on McCain were tough yet grounded with the type of wit and humor that makes people remember the exact quotes. Her basic point was simple though: we are all democrats and believe the same things, therefore it is imperative to vote for Obama. Perhaps the best thing she said was when she asked whether her voters were voting for her or the various people who need the help the republicans are not interested in providing. I thought that was the key point here.

Very impressed. My mom cried lol

Come on now. She had some great lines. The one about her mom being born when women couldn't vote and how her daughter voted for her for president literally gave me chills. Crazy to think women couldn't vote not so long ago. Then there was the Twin Cities zinger.

Her "highly dislike" number by REPs has fallen 28% in the last couple months. I know for a fact my wife would have voted for her. Hell, my 80 year old grandmother who's voted DEM for decades is voting for McCain because she's so pissed Hillary isn't the nominee.

I could live with her as POTUS. The devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

Clinton's speech was a perfectly delivered punch to the face. There's no way for the GOP to spin that.

Biden's speech was magnificent. The speech made up for the lack of great one liners with a moving measure of humanity, populism, and honesty. A speech aimed directly at the men and women who struggle to raise families and pay their bills. Perhaps it's appropriate that Obama accept the nomination tomorrow in an ancient Greek setting because Biden truly threw down the gauntlet. I'm sure the McCain camp was watching the Clinton speech, looking for any minor negative to use tomorrow to attack Obama, but instead they're faced with the impossible task of choosing a VP choice to contend with a man who can go toe to toe with anyone they throw at him.

Overall the 9-11pm (est) segment was a perfect mixture of past and future. Clinton reminded people of just what we had lost - and in hindsight how unimportant his impeachment fiasco really was. I don't possibly see the GOP competing with this

After which you can also tell them that they have health insurance. (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/DN-Uninsured_27bus.ART.State.Edition2.4dce428.html)

Quote from: Dallas Morning News
But the numbers are misleading, said John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a right-leaning Dallas-based think tank. Mr. Goodman, who helped craft Sen. John McCain's health care policy, said anyone with access to an emergency room effectively has insurance, albeit the government acts as the payer of last resort. (Hospital emergency rooms by law cannot turn away a patient in need of immediate care.)

"So I have a solution. And it will cost not one thin dime," Mr. Goodman said. "The next president of the United States should sign an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American – even illegal aliens – as uninsured. Instead, the bureau should categorize people according to the likely source of payment should they need care.

"So, there you have it. Voila! Problem solved."

You can't throw words around like "recession" because people will behave as rational people do during recessions: save and cut back.  A lot of interests are content on people continuing to build up debt and drive right off the cliff.  At least by then, executives can have their golden parachutes prepared and ready to leave the company with a fat sack of cash and stock options.

My roommate works as an engineer at a railroad company and orders to transport goods have dropped off to an almost worrying level.  Given the cost of gas, it isn't like large quantities of goods are being shipped on trucks or planes.  So what is happening is that the demand for goods is going down because people can no longer afford them or afford to take the risk of selling them.  So yeah, there is an economic downturn going on, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

Best overall speech of the convention. Everything that came before was essentially added together, perfectly in unity and clarity. I don't think it was as good as the 2004 speech but only because it didn't dwell on the inspirational, emotion writing. This was a policy speech. This was an introduction speech. No one could watch that and still wonder who Obama is, or what he will do as president.

Perfectly delivered.

PUMA meltdown, they have no idea how to respond; long pauses where they simply couldn't say anything but made idle chit-chat by discussing blog reports about how Obama's a terrorist, or a dozen people quickly trying to downplay any high notes by making wildly contradictory comments, followed by "Joe Blogger won't like this, America is going to be turned off."

apparently the policies in his speech were stolen from hillary, yet the policies in his speech are stupid, but he didn't even mention any policies at all, it was just fluff

and it's the worst speech ever delivered by an american politician and he's not an american citizen and he's hitler and he's stalin and michelle is dressed like a slut and and and and

...and it's done. I wonder if the GOP was actually betting on it being just fancy rhetoric, because the response from the McCain camp is really half-baked and seems unprepared; it's essentially "Well, that was misleading, because the fact remains: he opposes Republican policies."

You know, it's gotta simultaneously suck and rule to be a Republican.  On the one hand, you have no ideas on how to do anything other than appeal to people's base fears.  On the other, it constantly seems to work.

I've decided that this is America's Political Ragnarok.  There is no sitting on the sidelines.  I don't care who you fight for, but by Odin's raven you ARE fighting.  And if America fucks this one up the only solution is going to be getting rid of the illusion of our democracy and putting REAL shitheels in charge, like maybe TVC and myself.

I'm biased yes, but I can't possibly see how the RNC can compete with what I witnessed this week. The media has tried their best to downplay the entire event but from the first day to today it was great. Whether Obama wins or loses in November his campaign did the right thing by making the first day biographical in nature; it wasn't a "wasted" day and ratings show that things only increased after the first day, suggesting people were interested enough to continue tuning in. From Kennedy's emotional appeal to Hillary's battle cry...seriously, what do the republicans have to contend with that?

Bush, Cheney, and Rudy will parade around on their first day attempting to scare people. That is, unless the hurricane gives Bush and company a convenient excuse to skip the event. Then there's Arnold who's in trouble in California...uhhh who else. Conventions don't win elections but damn, the RNC just might be a disaster.
Title: Re: Evilbore Democratic National Convention Thread
Post by: Olivia Wilde Homo on August 29, 2008, 01:27:23 AM
The RNC probably shouldn't try to scare if the public approves of the DNC.  Trying to scare makes them easy to be painted as desperate (which they are).  I could see them taking the road of downplaying the DNC and focusing more on the GDP growth, the troop surge, and other things, suggesting that Bush delivered, even when the other party said they wouldn't.  Mention some stuff about staying strong against Russia and other things.  If it was popular, scaring people against the Democrats might make it worse.

Although I do expect Rudy to say "9/11" no less than five mentions per minute.  He has cemented himself as the President of 9/11.

Nope.  In fact, BEFORE Obama spoke the rolling average of the Gallup poll in three days went from a 2 point McCain lead to a 1 point Obama lead to a 6 point Obama lead.  That means the single day lead for Obama in the poll is probably in the double digits.

It was a good convention but after the RNC, people will forget about the DNC.  The DNC was executed very well and shows the solidarity that party desperately needs if it wants to win 2008.  However, there is still little reason why McCain is having the performance he is having and the RNC could very well neutralize whatever gains the DNC made and then some.  Obama's saving grace would then be to do as many debates as possible, which is clearly his strong point.  Then again, McCain's "old codger" speech style will appeal to a good number of Americans who think Obama's speech style would be too slick.

Palin works for swing vote middle class soccer moms.  She even looks like them.

Isn't she in some sort of controversy in Alaska at the moment?

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/ak_gov_says_staffer_pressed_for_troopers_firing.php

Quote
In a press conference this afternoon, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) conceded that someone inside her administration pressured the state's Department of Public Safety to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten, Palin's former brother-in-law, who is now embroiled in a bitter custody battle with Palin's sister.

Palin's statement is the latest in what has come to be known around Alaska as "Wooten-gate." The scandal began on July 11, when Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired from his post with little explanation, a move that quickly raised questions in Alaska.

A few days later, Monegan came forward, stating that he had been pressured by those around Palin to fire Wooten -- but had refused to do so -- a choice that he believes led to his sudden dismissal. Palin denied Monegan's accusations, and a Legislative Council has appointed a special commission to probe the matter.

In today's conference, Palin said that state troopers had taped a phone call from Frank Bailey, Palin's director of boards and commissions whom she appointed last August, in which Bailey inquired about having Wooten fired.

At the press conference today, Palin distanced herself from Bailey's actions claiming that he acted alone, but the recordings suggest that he was acting at her instigation.

"The Palins can't figure out why nothing's going on," Bailey said in the recorded phone call. "So Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads saying 'Why is this guy representing the department, he's a horrible recruiting tool.' You know? So from their perspective everybody's protecting him. . . Audi probably disagrees with me, Walt [Monegan] does and I understand it's really touchy, but I just want you to understand that cops that use excessive force or go out of the lines, they just have no tolerance, because they've seen the facts personally."

Bailey has yet to comment. Calls to his phone went directly to voice mail.

You guys are overthinking the Palin viewpoint.

Palin represents the swing voter soccer moms because soccer moms are very superficial.  Palin looks like them, has similar convictions than them, and proves that you don't have to be a raging baby killing feminist like Hillary Clinton to be a woman in politics.  Palin is the kind of woman you'd see getting her Starbucks latte every morning, going to work, and then making sure that she brings her Aerostar or her Grand Cherokee to pick up the kids at 3 pm.

It doesn't matter what her viewpoints are because it is unlikely she will implement them.  It isn't like she is capable of firebombing legislation.  She is just there for show, which is a lot of times, the traditional VP role.

Her job is make sure that the soccer moms vote for McCain/Palin and a lot of them will, where they might have went to Obama, a black man and the last time she saw a black man was on MTV rapping about guns and bitches.

It will be interesting.  Frankly I think that Obama's time to shine was in the summer.  This was when the GOP was the most disorganized and the fact that he and McCain wound up being neck and neck is disturbing and makes me pessimistic, which is why I keep thinking Obama is the Dukakis of 2008.  I'd love to be wrong and in fact, I hope I am.  Obama should have had a constant 10-20 pt lead over McCain.

As far as I am concerned, Obama's saving grace is doing as many televised debates as he can and hopes that the disenfranchised and apathetic come out of the woodwork and vote in droves for Obama.  I'm not holding my breath on that one because they didn't bother to show up in 2000 or 2004.

any increase in mccains chances to 'get in' makes me GRRR

It will be interesting.  Frankly I think that Obama's time to shine was in the summer.  This was when the GOP was the most disorganized and the fact that he and McCain wound up being neck and neck is disturbing and makes me pessimistic, which is why I keep thinking Obama is the Dukakis of 2008.  I'd love to be wrong and in fact, I hope I am.  Obama should have had a constant 10-20 pt lead over McCain.

yeah i know what you mean :-/

on a serious note:  Palin Pick is a bit of a shocker for me.  I didn't think Mccain would be gutsy enough for such a risky pick.   I at least think that McCain wont be as bad as Obamaphiles make him out to be, if only because he seems so feisty and unpreditable sometimes

I dunno, the pick makes me think McCain has been paying too much attention to the Hillary/PUMA movement, because I don't see any other significant reason he'd pick her over one of the more established Republican names that would have got him guaranteed support.

Biden sure is going to have an easy time at any VP debates.  He'll impale her whore ass.

That's my first reaction too.

The McCain campaign and its surrogates have really tried to push the "Hillary was dissed" meme and I think they're massively overestimating the traction they can get out of it.

Well, this may be a lame VP pick, but the Republicans still have the one trick up their sleeve that they've used in the past 3 election cycles:  Them gays be wantin' to get married.  I'm sure that if they wanted to, they could get more gay marriage bans out there in the states that don't already have them, thus attracting stupid christians that vote only right to the polls.

I think they mostly shot their wad on that one, if only because they got so many anti-gay marriage laws on the books.  Winning those referendums in Michigan and Ohio in 2004 means they can't put it on the ballot again in 2008.

You know, Palin wasn't an awful choice given the circumstances.  McCain can't pick someone too closely associated with the Bush brand and that rules out basically every Republican in the federal government.  So it had to be a governor.  Arnold's foreign, Jeb is a Bush, Charlie Crist is gay.

That leaves pretty slim pickings.

David Brooks is driven into drooling incoherence (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/29/opinion/29brooks.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin) by the prospect of an Obama victory.

In his mind I'm sure it's a brilliant satire.

He really embarrassed himself last night on PBS. He seems to have some type of teen infatuation with Obama, one which goes hot or cold depending on the most arbitrary, random nonsense reasons possible. So last night after the speech he told the panel he was disappointed: ohhh this was a purely Democrat speech, not aimed at republicans or independents at all, and woe is me cuz I came here and Obama didn't personally give me a thank you letter. Never mind that Obama said "democrats, republicans, and independents" 5 or 6 times in that speech, never mind the end of the speech where he called for common ground on abortion, guns, and gay marriage. Luckily the panelists called him out on it

But won't that only strengthen the perception that Obama is cumming to get our white wimmens?

Brooks praised Obama early on but for the last year has been acting shocked, SHOCKED to find out that he's a liberal.

It's possible that he's this dumb but I think he's just concern trolling.  Playing the open-minded centrist who just happens to be disappointed in every single prominent Democrat is part of his schtick, along with creating half-assed binary divisions of American culture (red states walk like this, blue states walk like this!).

I think it's been generally found that woman do not like pretty women in politics. Also the fact that these soccer mums put their children ahead of their careers and when Palin is seemingly seen as striding ahead with her policital ambitions when her disabled son is at home might jive with their socially conservative views.

As far as I am concerned, Obama's saving grace is doing as many televised debates as he can and hopes that the disenfranchised and apathetic come out of the woodwork and vote in droves for Obama.  I'm not holding my breath on that one because they didn't bother to show up in 2000 or 2004.

But all he needs is Kerry's states plus a couple of Iowa/Colorado/NewMexico/Nevada/Virginia

He's doing better than national polling would indicate. And Obama/Biden are going to dominate the debates, I wish there were more of them.

Yea, the first thought to enter my mind was surprise that she'd run for VP with a kid on the way.

Then they started talking about how she gave a speech after her water broke but before the baby was born, and I was like wtf is this shitq

I know he wrote the race speech himself.  His speechwriter probably helped with the other two, though.  Apparently Obama dictates, dude writes and then they both go back over it and tweak it.
