I tried so hard to love it! I swear to God. I even told people I loved it for a while. I was like 20 hours into it and I realized that I hated the game. I haven't touched it since.nooooooo mupepe noooconfirmed realtime. they both look like absolute dreams.:hyper :hyper :hyper :hyper :hyper

Those FFXIII pics look like a cross between FFVIII and Chrono Cross in terms of art direction.Hell yeah!
I need to change my pants.
Wow. And just wait 'til it's running on PS3.
Well at least we can finally put to bed the "OMG THOSE CG TRAILERS ARE REALTIME" bullshit from two years ago.
Wow. And just wait 'til it's running on PS3.:lol what version do you think this is from?
I see the character design is still...uh... :-\
I still don't see what's so amazing technically about the two games. It's mostly just good art. I guess the hair look pretty good but after seeing how hair animate in Nurien, it'll be pretty hard for me to be impressed by hair.(http://upload.dfyb.net/uploaded/green_goggles.jpg)
DFYB, upgrade your 5 yr old PC hardware and you won't be so easily impressed.upgrade your insults, yo

Good post. Quoting this so that you might get a 2nd chance.
frozen sea picture looks doable to me, it's just clever modeling and stuff.doable as in real-time and not just a pre-rendered background, sure. but i'm assuming the waves are frozen and probably made of a mix of 2D and 3D assets. it's a nice abstract scene.
Wow. And just wait 'til it's running on PS3.:lol what version do you think this is from?

QuoteAlready has been since last year.

DFYB, upgrade your 5 yr old PC hardware and you won't be so easily impressed.I'm wondering, exactly which games have you played on your PC that present such high quality models? I've played pretty much every major PC release of the last year without any problems. Crysis was easily the most impressive, though you can't really compare the two as they are focused on different things. Even in the face of stuff like Crysis, this is one of the best looking games I've ever seen. Your PC may be very powerful, but it doesn't mean a whole lot without the software. The majority of PC exclusive titles over the past year really haven't pushed the platform all that hard and certainly aren't going for anything even remotely similar to this.
Wow. And just wait 'til it's running on PS3.That kind of comment can be made in reference to just about every new title, though. You develop these games on the PC. I highly doubt they would waste time designing things the target platform is unable to handle, however. I'd imagine the only difference in visual quality you'll see when direct feed PS3 shots surface is image quality. These are heavily anti-aliased shots, which isn't going to last, but (if virtually every other early game showing is any indication) the content should remain. It's not as if the visuals here are really that far beyond other Japanese games focusing on character models. Devil May Cry 4 is very close in terms of model quality as is MGS4. The main difference here is the quality of the hair. Beyond that, there's nothing other-worldy here.
When you guys say "good final fantasy", do you mean a return to turn based combat? That too.
If you really stop and take a look at it, Versus and XIII, technically aren't that impressive.Wait, those games you mentioned ARE impressive, though. You are citing some of the best examples of high quality modeling yet seen in the industry and FFXIII appears to be more detailed than any of them (more complex hair and more detailed texturing). How is that NOT impressive?
Does the blonde dude for example look any better than Nero or Dante from Dmc4? Does it look any better than Marcus Gears 2, or Drake from Uncharted? Or Snake from MGS4?
Actually...it really doesn't. I think we are coming to the point where it's mostly artistical differences that we are seeing.
Anyway, this game is going to make Xbox 360s everywhere go RROD.Heh, I love how everyone associates specific games with the RROD. That's never been the case. With any big release, you're likely to have more people using their 360s and when people hear of other 360s dying around a similar time, they begin to believe the game caused it.
You guys want to know how we'll be able to tell whether Square gimped this game and isn't ready for this gen? If it fits on one DVD, that's how.
What a 360 version DOES mean, however, is that most cutscenes will indeed be realtime.
Wow. And just wait 'til it's running on PS3.

Since when have the cutscenes in a Final Fantasy game been realtime?
This is Final Fantasy, not Metal Gear Solid.
And no, Square is not above artifacting and shitty sound. Haven't you played Final Fantasy VII?
Square never bothered to max out a DVD on the PS2, so I doubt they will with a Blu-Ray disc on PS3.
Disc switching ended with PSOne, unless you're playing the Xbox 360.
Get over yourself.
Since when have the cutscenes in a Final Fantasy game been realtime?Err, artifacting and poor quality sound was something that was more acceptable during the PSX days, but not during the HD console era. Square has been using realtime cutscenes in their RPGs for the entire last generation! Both single player FF games on PS2 rely almost entirely on lengthy, realtime cutscenes with CG here and there. The same is true of all of their other PS2 games. Square has been doing awesome realtime cinemas since 2000 on PS2!

Switching discs >>>> Sitting through an install every act.I agree, but what does that have to do with anything in this thread? That statement applies ONLY to Metal Gear Solid 4.
Why are you guys discussing a boring jrpg series in such detail?
I didn't even play FFXII past the first ten minutes because the intro CGI sequence sucked so hard and reeked of so much emo bullshit.
You know what was so emo about FFXII? All that bullshit chivalry crap.
Nobody in real life ever wants to be a "loyal" knight, unless they're plotting to be the king a la Brutus on Ceasar. You see it in politics all the time.
FFXII's storyline just felt like one big Squaresoft circlejerk from the beginning.
"Oh hey, Reks, you're too young for war. Oops, I killed you! Haha."
Gay shit is what Final Fantasy is.
I think Final Fantasy VII was outsourced because they haven't been able to make a good Final Fantasy game since.
Holy shit at the system wars bullshit in here.
Get a fucking life, morans, this is not GAF.

Unless, of course, you consider none of those games impressive.
I'm wondering, exactly which games have you played on your PC that present such high quality models?
Age of Conan can display tens of characters that are almost as geometrically complex and have more textural details. It's actually a pretty system demanding game. You'll need at least two of the newest GPUs to run that game at max settings.I don't really know how to take this one. I thought Age of Conan, from what I have seen, is pretty ugly looking. I'd imagine it's demanding for VERY different reasons, though. I mean, for the type of game it is, the visuals are pretty detailed. Do you have some ultra high-detail shots from your rig handy? Going off of these shots, however, I think FFXIII looks MUCH better (from a pure visual standpoint). Obviously, AoC doesn't seem to have any sort of cinematic elements going on that would allow for a proper comparison. Like I said, it's hard to compare the two.
If you're just talking about a few characters on screen, then the Nurien demo already has character models that are even more detailed than the ones in FF13, plus the boobies in Nurien are animated by PhysX.I was talking about actual games. Tech demos are something different entirely, but in all honesty, I didn't think the Nurien demo looked better at all. I think it's a fair comparison as the tech demo was made to push the hardware (so the designers focus ONLY on visuals) but obviously lacks the budget/time that Square can put into the art design of their models. Of course, Nurien is supposed to be UE3, right? Anyways, the motion WAS really impressive in Nurien, no doubt, but it looks even chunkier than FFXIII in stills. I'm sure the hair in FFXIII won't feature such high quality motion, but then again, the Nurien demo seems to have been designed to showcase just such a feature.
Because besides the last two horrid entries, the Final Fantasy series is still awesome.
:o :lolHa ha, read my reply in that other thread. You probably think I'm insane, but really, I'm just bored. I really don't take this stuff as seriously as it seems. :P
I won't believe it's realtime until I see a HUD.(http://jpompliano.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/ffxiii1.jpg)
is this from the dvd version or the blu ray version
Holy shit at the system wars bullshit in here.

Don't you have a PC thread to go make?
Isn't there some new news on the World of Warcraft expansion or something yet?
Man, I really need to know if Vista SP1 is fine or if I should wait for SP2 still? Help me out.

perhaps because no one else needs to misrepresent their machine? ;)
also - this is an X360 game too now, you know.and they've said they haven't even started porting it yet. you're basically looking at a PS3 exclusive right now. the bullshit is only made more obvious when you have some people screaming "this can't be real-time!" and others screaming "it's not even technically impressive" or "looking forward to the superior 360 version"
not possible real-time and unimpressive at the same time. :lolQuoteand they've said they haven't even started porting it yet. you're basically looking at a PS3 exclusive right now
good point, as you imply once off the constraints of the weaker machine, then perhaps we can see some improvements.
if being real-time wouldn't surprise you, why make the fuss over it being real-time in the first place?Quotenot possible real-time and unimpressive at the same time.
hint: it's not the "is it possible/impressive?" part that several of us are getting at. :o :o :o
Quoteif being real-time wouldn't surprise you, why make the fuss over it being real-time in the first place?
the point is that it being real time in this state -at this point in time- on the PS3 -would- surprise me.
I'd like to be surprised.
note : i've not said it is unimpressive at any point, all i've said even remotely in that realm is suggesting the X360 version could look better (which i'd think was common sense with extra work time)hah, i get it. funny.
Hopefully they farm it out in the west, you know, where people know how to make good looking games.
