Just picked mine up as well. I also looked for Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter while I was at it but they didn't have it. :(  But goddamn was that box of Disgaea 3 trying to vex me with her seductive magic. That slut had my fingers fondling her and reaching for my wallet. Then thankfully that crusty old bastard Godfather Time shoved his wrinkly member in my ass and told me I couldn't do both. I soloemnly agreed and he slipped out and vanished like he usually does.

And that's my completely random tale of the journey to the videogame store.

I am loving this game.

It turns out that my love for Tales hasn't diminished, I just couldn't get into Legendia or Abyss at all.

+ Really interesting story and characters. The main character Yuri, just as I knew when I first saw him when the game was revealed months ago, is really something special. The guy is a sarcastic, positive, all around good guy without being a total goody goody. Yuri's an everyman. I never get tired of him and he's immediately likable. The character interaction is really swell so far. Estelle, like Yuri, has her own thang going on. She's a typical princess, but her naivety is taken into overdrive so she can be an amusing character. Repede is a fucking dog with a pipe. HOW CAN YOU HATE THAT? I can go on too! This cast is wayyyy better than Abyss', or any other Tales game's so far for me.

+ Excellent script so far, that doesn't throw a bunch of stupid terms in your face at all times (Abyss), or have distinguished mentally-challenged story scenes in general that make you want to turn the console off (Legendia). Not only this, but it's really funny too. I've found myself laughing more than a few times, not only because of the script but because the character interaction. It really stands out and the characters are immediately likable. Yuri throws rocks at guards in the face in order to get by them, Estelle tries hitting Yuri in the face with a vase when they meet, and even the battle victory dialogue and skits are well done too. "You'll never beat me in 100 years." "Is this because you're...older?" "Not really."

+ Battle system. I could not get into Abyss' or Legendia's. The characters weren't fun to use, their move lists were boring ect. In this game however, I am even playing as more than the main character. Repede's REALLY fun to play as. Yuri is the BOMB. Estelle's okay, but I'm not a big fan of mage's in Tales anyways.

+ Unlike Abyss, the game isn't hack and slash and button mashing. There are a few variables that make it so that you can't get by with just button mashing, especially on hard mode. One of which is the encounter link system, something I have not heard people even bring up yet in reviews or impressions. If you see multiple enemies on the field, you can bunch them up together and fight them all at once. It's really neat, because you will be fighting an upward of 8-9 enemies at once, and you CAN'T button mash to get by. You have guard and know when to combo. It's REALLY neat and it reminds me of Blue Dragon, although done probably more interestingly.

+ The game gives you a lot of reasons to check out new weapons and have fun experimenting with skills. Some weapons have certain skills. It really reminds me of Final Fantasy IX, and it's sososososo addicting.

+ WEAPON SYNTHESIS!!!

+ Music is REALLY good so far, and this is coming from someone who's usually not impressed with Tales music.

+ Voice acting is great so far. I'm not a big fan of this version's intro music, I prefer the Japanese one. I guess I really am a homojapual.

+ Unlike Abyss, the game doesn't feel on rails so far. There is actually incentive to explore. You can find inns on the way to town, or secret items you can't find anywhere else by exploring. They are easily missable if you don't go out of your way either.

+ The game has excellent pacing thus far and starts out with a bang. Unlike Legendia or Abyss, the game doesn't turn me off right from the beginning.

+ The graphics. After Symphonia, Abyss and Legendia's more 3d graphics and art style didn't really interest me. I'm so so glad they brought back the cel shading.

Negatives? Hmmm. The battle controls could be a lot more smooth, but I'm used to them now. Jumping is still weird though.

Color me shocked. Impressed.

OMG I love this game.

This game is great. I'm about 2-3 hours in so far,I've fought two bosses which weren't too bad,I have a 42 hit combo and I already have a full party. The battle system is good and apparently it gets deeper as progress through the game which is radically exciting. One thing I definitely noticed is the abundance of those voice chats. Within the first hour or so,I've been through about 5-6 of them but this isn't a complain they're rather enjoyable and I laughed a lot. Oh and Estelle :heartbeat The entire cast so far is great.

And I have 2 achievements!

Himumu destroyed my impressions.... :'(

I'm not exactly sure how far you are but inside the Quoi Forest, you fight a boss ;get him in the corner and go at it. I know I got a bit lucky though,my party members became relentless and just kept attacking. It took me a little while to realize that you can't do Arte as soon as you're finished doing a combo,it can only be during a combo you can link a arte. I'm sure the game told me this but I didn't pay attention.

It's even more addicting because new synths become available as your synth level increases. OMGotta catch them all.

I just have one thing to say... DO NOT MAKE THE KAROLIAN SWORD FROM YOUR KAROLIAN HAMMER!!! Wait until the Karolian Hammer+1 is available first, then do Karolian Hammer > Karolian Hammer+1 > Karolian Sword > Karolian Sword+1. You only get ONE Karolian Hammer in the game. DO NOT SELL IT.

omfg are you serious

and I'm not selling SHIT because it could add to synthesis somehow.

Im enjoying it a lot. Kinda think some of the reviewers saying the battles are just mashing are missing the point of fights. There's an insane amount of focus on target priority and positioning, not to mention the incredibly crucial and at times, challenging attack/defend/item/move timing. Its not as much of a cinch as they let on.
Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~
Post by: Van Cruncheon on August 28, 2008, 02:43:07 AM
it gets even LESS mashy as it goes on. did they only play for like an hour?
Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~
Post by: MrAngryFace on August 28, 2008, 02:44:49 AM
That was from the Gamespot review iirc, they said the combat is mashy, and its like haha what? If you mash the buttons you get locked in a crapload of unintentional pauses and oh fuck they're murdering u!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I would like to add is that I have literally only played an hour, and I probably have a better grasp of the combat system :p. WTG Gamespot.

admittedly, yuri's cute little sword flip gets annoying when it starts breaking up my combos. fortunately, using up + b as my fourth strike seems to not have it, so i can chain into an arte easier

This is probably the LEAST mashy Tales game I have played.  This is probably the first one where I've had to actually use block.

So far, this is fucking awesome.  The first impression is great.  The VA is good, so the skits aren't brutal like in the VA-less Abyss.  I even think some bits are a bit funny.  So far, so good.

My only complaint is a lack of delicious gothic lolitas, so my final judgment is 4/10.

This game is however long you want it to be. You play at your own pace.
Fastest time in the world right now is 7:50. I'm currently at 65 hrs and about 3/4 done. I'm going for the 100hr achievement anyway, and still need to gain another 138 levels for the level 200 achievements (and titles) lulz.

Damn.  Maybe next Summer then.

You cannot button mash in hard mode. I don't see how you can unless you grind for hours. Reviewers don't know what they're talking about. I had to constantly block and use almost all my resources just to take down Zagi.

Yuri is seriously one of the best main characters in a jrpg in a long long long time.

He's not a goody goody guy who has a holier than thou attitude, he just says what comes to mind, and usually he's right. He's not a good guy, or a bad guy, he just does what is right. At certain parts of the story he does things the typical jrpg hero would never do, which count as big spoilers. When he says something I pay attention because it's usually something of great importance.

It's nice to play as a main character who's my favorite character in the game. Usually it's the side characters for me...but in this game it's the main character all the way.

I've been impressed with just about everything about it so far, including the voice acting. PS2 quality stuff here.

10 hours in and so far this is the best JRPG I've played in years, and it's a fucking Tales game of all things.  The story may be your regular anime hogwash but everything else has been a complete blast.  I can't imagine why people would want to pay for the +10 level pack DLC when the combat is as fun as it is.  I'm grinding without even thinking about it just 'cause I enjoy the fighting system so much.

I'm around 46 hours into the game, just got the airship.

Once you get the airship the game really opens up. I got waiter costumes for the girls at Dahngrest. You can get Karol and Raven waiter costumes too, which I'm going to do later today. Aside from getting those titles, a good reason for doing the good ol' Tales waitress mini game in ToV is that income. I went into Dahngrest with 50k. When I finished that mini game, I had 100k Gald and I only did 3 people. The characters have varying difficulty as well, so there's different set amounts of money. So far Rita's was the hardest, so during that I got at least 30k Gald, I'm guessing, I don't know. And it took only 10 minutes to do.

I like the waitress costumes in this game for the most part. Rita's main outfit is way better than waitress one so I changed it back. Her waitress outfit is some animu bullcrap with cat ears. I got her a Magatama necklace too. Looks badass. Estelle's main outfit is awful, because she's on some long journey and she's dressed like she's going on to a goddamn dinner with the president of the USA, so her waitress get up is pretty swell. Got her a pair of glasses to go with it. Judy's is pretty cool but I prefer her main costume, but I thought I could use a different change of pace. I wonder what Karol and Raven's costumes look like lol

Anyways, the game opens up. Noderpolica now allows you to enter into various competitions at the coliseum. There's a 30 man competition all the way up to 100 man. I tried out the 30 man, and won with 6 seconds to spare. It is SOOOO FUN. The coliseum is a good way to get some cash too. I got 6000+ Gald and it took just a few minutes. Flip it to easy and you can get yourself some major cash goin' in a few minutes I gather. Coliseum owns. 30 man is the first level and it was friggin hectic. I can't even imagine 100 Man. :o I must be really tough.

Right now I'm exploring the world again, town after town. I'm considering going through every dungeon up to this point again so I can get some more crafting materials. Now that I can go anywhere in the game synthesizing is way way way appealing.

Went to some dungeon where I skipped out on a Giganto monster earlier in the game. I kicked its ass. Awesome. Now I have to take out the other Giganto monsters.

So like, 46 hours into the game in less than a week and after today when I hang out with my friends and crap, by the time my session finishes I should be a good 50 hours in. The only game that I have done with in recent times is Suikoden V when me and a friend raced each other the first weekend it came out and both had 55+ hours clocked by the end of the weekend.

I think at this point I can now make a good comparison with Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Mass Effect in terms of quality as they all took me 50-60 hours to complete and I'm in that range right now.

This is what I think: Tales of Vesperia kicks all their asses. Not only is it polished, it's just so much more...fun! I didn't even fully master the battle system until 40 hours in. It is really deep and has a lot of nuances. And I could STILL get better at it at this point. The story sometimes drifts around in typical Tales fashion, but for some reason I don't mind because the cast is so good. Even then, the story has its good moments. When it's good, it's REALLY good. So basically, if you need to get any rpg this gen up until, I don't know, FFXIII? SO4? Get Tales of Vesperia. Then again I haven't played Infinite Undiscovery so who knows. I know this sounds shocking because it's a fucking TALES game of all things, but I am not fucking with you. Honest.

started this game yesterday, I like it so far.

Im going back to the quoi woods and getting something for a tree cure I guess. I expect surprises.

Anyway I dont play many non-traditional rpgs so the battle system is pretty new to me, and I kind of suck at it. I have to run around and reposition myself so I dont get attacked from the top to bottom during combos and such. Good stuff...

Been playing a bit of this and I'm liking it. For a seemingly rush translation job, so far it's pretty good. Only a few hours in but my fave part so far was when

Yuri mocked little hunter boy by saying "oooh eggbear" or something like that, but in a mocking tone...it made me lol because I can't remember the last time I played an RPG voiced so naturally...anyway   :-\

...

Battle system is fun, graphics are clean, all around nice package. One of the ideas I've liked in the tales games are the skits, they are a decent way IMO to flesh out the characters in a way that is completely optional. US version finally gets VA skits this time around, and I haven't skipped one yet.

yeah, rita and raven are legitimately amusing and are my favorite characters. karol's the first precocious kid in an animu game i don't hate, just because pwning him is the team's major hobby. also, he has some good lines. repede rocks because HE NEVER TALKS.

estelle is annoying, but she's at least a step above collette as far as ANGEL MANA PRINCESSES go. still, if i didn't need her uber-heals, i'd punt her earnest do-gooder ass to the curb. judith is just kinda there, although MAN her spear moves are well-animated.

Now my team is Rita, Estelle, Yuri, and Repede.  That is like, my boss team.  If I am tooling around a dungeon, I like switching different characters in at out, mainly to hear the often amusing banter.  None of the characters are really bad, but I think my default team is likely the best.

Raven is my kind of guy. I love the spa antics later in the game.

Quote
Now my team is Rita, Estelle, Yuri, and Repede.

That is the exact team I have been using, Repede for stealing, Estelle healing, Rita raping and Yuri just kicking ass.

Yeah, that's what put Repede over Karol for me.  This really is one of the very few RPGs I have ever played where I actually want to play as all the characters in order to hear the banter.  In most jrpgs, I just find the obvious best party and stick with that as long as the game lets me.

At first I was kinda bummed, but now I find it kinda neat that this is basically a prettied up Abyss with better characters.  It really goes to show you the difference between a good and a great RPG.  The mechanics in both games are rather similar, but all aspects of presentation in Vesperia smoke Abyss completely.

I just use rita for boss fights whenever possible, then just spam fireball or darkness explosion. Outside of overdrive I spam tractor beam ----> darkness explosion. Worse case I just spam her low strike to knock people down over and over and create openings for everyone.

Unless im forced to use Yuri, this has made boss fights fun and ez. I need to gather synth items for the item that lets you switch characters in battle.

Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~

Rita is the easiest to use. Her sweep melee is stupid effective and her AoE spells are muhahahahha POWAR. If anything id argue its harder to time her burst artes since when spells 'end' is different per spell. I can usually nail her burst with certain spells and not others.
Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~
Post by: Van Cruncheon on September 04, 2008, 02:41:53 AM
you can pull rison out of his dashes with tractor beam, and karol can dish out major otg pain to him with a bunch of his skills while you heap on the spell hurt.

use yuri first and rawdog nan until she drops -- she has like half the hp tison does. make sure ai rita is focusing on him so you can chain final strikes (rita's spells almost always net a fs symbol), and she falls quick. switch to control rita when she falls and start tractoring.

lifts enemies up (where they can get hit by aerials, especially judy's) and then slams to the ground for moderate damage plus they are prone and can take the big otg hits from karol/repede/yuri plus subsequent ground spells.

Rita is the easiest to use. Her sweep melee is stupid effective and her AoE spells are muhahahahha POWAR. If anything id argue its harder to time her burst artes since when spells 'end' is different per spell. I can usually nail her burst with certain spells and not others.
You just hold down X during the arcane arte to do burst artes. You don't have to wait until the very end.

Better than Mass Effect and Oblivion?

yes. Mass Effect is good but it is flawed up the ass. The only good sections of Mass effect are the story planets and you can beat those in 15 hours.

Oblivion...Bethesda has never made a good game.

Vesperia is great because it continously brings something new to the table, gameplay and story wise even 50 hours in. The game knows when to switch it up, and the pacing and general polish kicks all next gen rpgs (western or eastern) asses. On top of this, no other next gen rpg currently out has as much depth gameplay wise as Vesperia; sidequest, battle, customization, or skill wise. Furthermore, the game has some of the best art direction this gen period. Some places I just sit there and stare at the visuals. I don't think I've been so impressed with a jrpg's art direction since FFX came out in 2001. The story and characters, while not really being anything particularly new, gravitate towards interesting archetypes, even the characters you'd think would be annoying aren't. Also, Yuri is the best lead in an rpg in a long ass time.

There's lots to like about Vesperia. Most of my complaints are nitpicks if anything else.

that dog, that goddamn boss of a dog.

use the flower on em.

played through Symphonia and didn't like it one bit: cool battle system, but awful characters, story, VA, you name it. I chose to ignore the other tales games because of it

now this is out and you people are splooging all over it and i'm getting curious again, especially because of this

Quote
vesperia's cutscenes are snappy, well-paced, and feature great VA work -- probably the best i've heard in a localization yet

symphonia had fun battles and dungeons, but the plot/characters were the worst animu pap ever to reek at the bottom of the barrel. vesperia doesn't stray far from its animu roots, but at least it freshens up the cliches a bit, and can actually be a bit charming

Symphonia had two good characters.  Regal was basically Argo from G Gundam, and Sheena was basically that woman that got raped by everyone from Ninja Scrolls.

Also, the story is pretty average and every skit with Estelle/Karol is made out of animu distinguished mentally-challenged (I think I like Lost Odyssey more).

Oh, and every character in this game is annoying except for Judith and Repede.

Yeah, that is a bit annoying.  Then again, they are enjoyable to watch so far.  With IU I would leave it on and check eb or gaf while that bitch Aya was blabbering on.

btw, can you pause anime cutscenes, or was the intro one the only one and I don't need to worry about it anymore?

And based on the first encounter so far and my past experience with Tales game, I might say the combat in IU is more to my liking, but i'll see how that pans out.

So far I am enjoying it, but it isn't anything special and I don't see what sets it apart from the average Tales game.  Characters are good so far, and some of the dialogue is actually pretty funny (like how simple Estelle is), and the story doesn't seem to have a grand goal off the bat.  Graphics are decent.  Music is pretty bad and made only more noticeable after coming off of IU's amazing music.

I like IU combat because it's seamless, but the Tales combat REALLY does expand greatly. You just get these add-ons like over a very long period of time (greater than 8 hours to get everything in the combat system).

That's what sets it apart from the average Tales game. Good characters, good dialog. :D

IU's music is nice, but it's very very typical Sakuraba. Which doesn't make it bad or anything, but the shine is off that pig.

Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~
Post by: cool breeze on September 07, 2008, 07:12:47 PM
IU combat wasn't only great because it was seamless, but also because I felt it had good flow despite the simple controls.  So far Vesperia just feels a bit stiff with the combat and doesn't seem like it lets you be as creative with how you approach a battle.  I do really, really appreciate that it lets you go into great detail with how you get your party to act.  I haven't found a proper use for it yet, I just know that something like that would have made IU so much better, especially because the assholes in my party kept using my revive items when Edward had revive spells.

And whatever typical style comes from the music in IU is still massive amounts better than music in Vesperia so far.  The battle theme is already starting to bother me.  Although, I actually did think the intro song was decent enough.

Vesperia gets a wolf... IU gets a bear

It is clear who wins

In the battle of cool animals, IU wins hands down.

Vesperia has a pipe smoking ninja dog, which is something that would normally be cool, but in the face of a Norbear? It ain't shit.  Norbear is stylin' on Ninja dog.

Post by: y2kev on September 07, 2008, 07:16:51 PM
You can't really get combo linking until you get a bunch of items and upgrades (which is distinguished mentally-challenged, I think). It's like when you can level up your CONTROL in sonic and the stupid rings. But you can eventually lengthen your physical combos, you'll start chaining artes, etc. Plus, chaining burst arts and fatal strikes (you don't have either of those yet either) is so fun.

Estelle is great because she is basically a female animu Rain Man who can heal you.  Yuri is a snarky badass.  Rita is just awesome.  Karol is a dumb kid who is made better by his interactions with Rita.  Repede is funny in cut scenes, especially with the whole 'dog talk' running joke, but I don't have in my main party anymore
Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~

Repede is pretty awesome. Most boss fights arent that hard if you figure out the trick and grind a bit between places. I was grinding a lot for synth materials early game anyway..plus if you use Rita as your main whenever possible fights are over real fast. Base fireball spell gets more fireballs and more damage per fireball as she gains levels. A spell that never gets lame. Plus her level 3 burst arte is win.

I have no idea what a burst art is yet.  I don't think I ever played a Tales game where a switched the main/starting character up as the person I play as, so I don't think I will start now

Karol's growth through the game really makes him endearing. He is always the butt of jokes and he's a really funny naive kid. There's some great parts later in the game where Rita beats him up for blurting out stupid shit. I also like how he carries around this massive bag that is about half the size of him. His costume titles are funny as fuck too.

Yeah I gave him the swirly nerd glasses so even when he's pissed im lolling. For a while I had everyone carrying around their shitty canteens, Repede had the coolest one. Right now i've got sunglasses on Yuri, glasses on Estelle, BIG ROPE on Rita, and nerd glasses on Karol.

The combat opens up. I feel like a god using rita. There was one fight where I was being closed in on, had another enemy across screen vs Yuri, and Karol fighting one of the smaller dudes. Fired up overdrive, cast a cool close range spell that wiped out the guy closing on me, fired off my level 2 Burst Arte on the big guy Yuri was fighting. Plus her fireballs and Finishing Strikes go all the way across the screen.

Fireball > Spiral Flame. Fireball is <3 -- Just fire off level 1 overdrives and SPAM that shit to clear multiple targets fast or to fucking hammer down a big one until you get an FS op.

I need to spend more time messing with skills. I havent needed to since the game does an amazing job auto-assigning and I havent been in a tight enough spot where ive needed to jigger stuff.

I have no idea what a burst art is yet.  I don't think I ever played a Tales game where a switched the main/starting character up as the person I play as, so I don't think I will start now

I'm just happy that this game levels up those out of your party at the same rate as those in it.

You can switch characters in the menu between battles by moving the character you want into the first slot. I cant figure out how to effectively use Estelle, but Rita is so OP its helpful to know how to use her.
You can't switch the character that you control in battle early in the game. There's a certain item you have to get/synthesize first.

I already feel the combat has been opening up.  The only thing I wish was that more elaborate combat wasn't based on using MP (or whatever they call it).  At least you are constantly getting it back by hitting enemies and all that.

ha, I just realized that the last RPG I liked this much came out this same time last year (Persona 3).  :bow August for JRPGs :bow2

Well in fights if your people wanna use items a little thing will pop up near their menu with them asking to use an item. This is essentially where the player can cancel their use of the item. Thats pretty much what the comic is about. The absurdity of the idea of them asking in battle if they can use a life bottle.

Yeah you have to do a lot of taunting with yuri's projectile-like arte attack and keep him away from her. Its a tricky fucking fight. Thats the last 'hard' fight for some hours. When you fight bosses keep an eye open for objects within the combat area you can target, there's two big boss fights that center around this.

If you lure the wolf to the plants he gets stunned, which leaves him open. Its pretty tricky since you can get stunned too. It does make the fight easier tho.

The plant thing isnt crucial, personally I think its the worst boss fight mechanic in the game just because there's no way to know how close you can get, and how cose he needs to get.

This game is going to take me forever to beat, it knows exactly how to get at my ocd.  I am almost broke for buying weaker weapons that I'm going to grind with so I can get those weapon skills.  I just got to the Guild city and I honestly spent like 10 minutes planning on which order I will use these weapons and managing my money and skills.  Luckily there are some swords that both Yuri and Estelle can both use.  This game is so awesome.

And I probably will start watching One Piece after playing this if they are apparently similar.

How old is Flynn? He seems like he would be older than Yuri.

Vesperia rox hardcore. You dont HAVE to mess with skill allocation cause the game does a decent job, but you can, and the result is doing better in the arena, getting better combos going, *and probably some achievements tied to that as well* so really the game is as deep as you want it to be.

So I guess sticking with Karol would be a good option.  I already have Rita as my main ranged attacker while me and Karol beat the shit out of monsters up close.  I had no idea he would be an archer because it seemed like he had a samurai sword in the cutscenes.

Yeah, Karol isnt bad and becomes a pretty good tank. I switch between him, repede, and judith most of the time. Im trying to get Repede through the 30/60/100 man arena challenges. KILLER FIGHTIN DOG

I don't know who Judith is yet, but if she is a good melee character then she can replace Karol eventually.  I hate that he keeps doing his healing hammer techniques when we already healer.  I want Flynn in my party.

I think the AI handles judith pretty well. Most of her attacks focus on arial combos.

I will probably have her replace Karol, but lately Karol has been awesome because he is using a bigass bastard sword.

And which enemies give up Large claws or Tortious shell?

This game is going to drive me crazy with these damn skills.  I just bought like 5 weapons I need to now grind for Yuri.  I gave up on dealing with my secondary party members and am only keeping the main ones stocked, but it is still so much.

And Yuri is totally awesome.  He is the Batman of the Vesperia world (Flynn is Gordon).

You could cheat a LITTLE and BUY 300,000 gald from xbl ;) I was just testing to see how it worked, and it was the most harmless (ie non game breaking) since you blow through that money fast on eq for everyone.

Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~
Post by: GilloD on September 11, 2008, 01:40:41 AM
They are all in boss fights. Normally, if you do what you're supposed to do, there'll be a quick cutscene mid-fight and it will say "Great!". I think the only fight where this doesn't happen is the first one. Besides that, there are about two or three boss fights that don't have secret missions, but all the other ones do.

Aha. I have no idea what I did, but I made the robot fall over.

Repede has lots of agility and average attack power. Karol is incredibly slow and has powerful attacks that miss a lot.

Yep. Sometimes he uses it a bit too much, but it's more helpful than Karol's healing aid smash. And if you keep using it, he'll eventually start shooting 2-3 arrows instead of just 1.

Achievements aren't so bad for this game. You'll get at least 500 on one playthrough by playing normally. I have like 450 right now. I'll have over 700 once I beat the game.

I don't even use Rita, she takes forever to cast.  :-\

Yuri, Judith, Raven, & Estelle is my main party. It's nice to have a party of 3 1/2 fighters and 1 1/2 healers.
Title: Re: Tales of Vesperia ~de arimasu~
Post by: MrAngryFace on September 20, 2008, 01:34:52 AM
omg, not using rita, youre so wrong.

Fireball, thats almost all you need. dmg and number go up with ritas levels. Aside from the few fire resist enemies, 8 high damage fireballs will fuk up a boss. She has a few skills that speed up and power up the larger spells.

Not to mention spells like tidal wave jack up overdrive fast, so you slam down one overdrive, spam those or hell spam fireballs, and boom, got another overdrive.

I spend a lot of my time grinding so everyone is always overleveled. I killed the last giganto monster yesterday, he was a total pushover with Rita. Rita = POWAR. Her spells in overdrive generate a full overdrive gauge if used right, so you can just sit there just spamming punishing crippling spells. I use her for every boss fight I can. Fireball spam + advanced arte + burste arte sometimes a mystic arte. If they fire resist I just swap elements and do the same. Fireball is the best spell tho.

Here's a little bit of the guide for you:

Brutal (58) - Just north of Deidon Hold (he'll spawn)
Medusa Butterfly (45) - Sands of Kogorh
Hermit Drill (34) - Weasand of Cados
Brucis (62) - Egothor Forest
Pterobronc (49) - Mt Temza
Fenrir (58) - Erealumen Crystallands
Poseidon (55) - Enduring Shrine of Zaude
Chimera Butterfly (50) - Quoi Woods
Griffen (59) - Northeast Yurzorea (northwest continent on the map, search the field, it spawns a bit north of the hot springs is where I found it)

The one in Quoi woods requires the level 5 sorc ring so you can burn brush to get to it, which you can get by going back to Myorzo and talking to the elder to get the first Fell Arm. Then a little ways into chapter 3, after 4 dungeons (you'll know what I mean when you finish them) go to the stone outcropping on the map southwest of the Nordopolica, the sword will react with it and you go in, the rest takes care of itself.

Level 5 ring lets you go all sorts of places blocked off previously and to get chests blocked off by rocks n brush.

I think it's just pay 300,000 first time, 600,000 second time, and then you get in for free after that. But there is a decent time delay in between the three parts.
Oh, that's why I couldn't get in.

I just wanted to get it over with because I couldn't bear the thought of looking at Estelle's stupid fucking face for, like, 20 more hours. So I set  the difficulty to easy and powered the fuck through it.

I'd buy another Tales of... game. It's, like, really catchy animu trash, but in videogame form.

@ gilloD - Sunken parking garage is a stupid mini-game town that you can only access after the final dungeon appears.

1. 8 is the mystical kami-sama that awakens to save the earth from the evil guy.

2. The twist is that instead of the main character ignoring the hot chick forever, he comes out and says he's more interested in the young boy in the party.

3.  Not sure.

4.  The evil guy who has been trying to destroy the earth mana flow lifestream tree.

5.  You kill the evil guy and a j-pop montage where all the characters are having fun plays.

Well its good enough the first play to take your time and get everything out of the way (especially for the 100 hour achievement). The second play is a speedrun, you will play the entire game in about 10 hours (gametime).

Have everyone defend, beat him up until the cutscene. Use Destruction Field with Yuri until his guard breaks (be in Overdrive 4 while doing this), then switch to Raven (leave Yuri defending) and just spam Rain and hope for the best. Took me like 15 tries...

The YouTube vids showing this make it look -extremely- easier than it is. It's frustrating.

btw, I hope you triggered the cutscene for the Bonus Dungeon. You are almost to the point where you miss it (aka end of Act 2)

i will totally buy it if they fit flynn storywise into your party. or if he's playable for subsequent playthroughs. if he's just some extra for a bonus dungeon then i'lll pass.

dont give a flying fuck about the pirate or the other stuff.

Jansen, is that the
spoiler (click to show/hide)
shrine where you raise/lower the water levels and then fight Alexei?

If so you have 6-10 hours left depending on the subquests you do.

I like Abyss's cast better for the most part, but :heartbeat Rita :heartbeat

i just got deim nomos. looking at a faq seems i still have a ways to go

wow the battle system gets way better once you can link every kind of artes and the skills that put you into OL after a certain amount of hits in a combo

ok someone explain to me why raven didnt die. shouldnt he have kicked the bucket when they converted all the blastia into spirits?

btw pretty good game. overall i would say it's better than abyss but i was disappointed with the last 3rd of the game and the end boss and ending were pretty lame

jrpgs really need more protagonists that are cold blooded like yuri. i lol'd when zagi was talking about making his whole body into blastia and then yuri cut his ass and told him "do it in hell"

the last arc is certainly the weakest, typical tales arc (free summons etc...).

but if you are looking for a more challenging end boss, collect all the fell arms to fight a 3rd form of the final boss.

iirc the last two fell arms are in the last dungeon and they take a while to get them, distinguished mentally-challenged dungeon.

how long is this game? I am a level 42 at 32 hours in, but I noticed that I am only on #13 out of 23 in the secret battles. I hope there isn't another 20 hours that I have to put into this game. I like it, but it is wearing me down a bit
