In theory, I'd feel bad for the people there. But I've often said those stupid enough to go back after Katrina can rightly float away during the next one. Living under sea level = for idiots and dirty Euros.
New Orleans is awesome. There's really no place like it, and it can be a great place to live. There's a reason people go back. I'd reccomend everyone go there at least once (assuming it's there in a week).

So, build a new city like it. Preferably one that is located above sea level.
Stupid name for a hurricane/tropical storm/whatever
yaaaaaaaay, they're probably coming on saturday, and they're bringing their two cats, fatso mcjumpsalot and manic-depressive
i'm sure once they meet my cat, nothing can possibly go wrong
When I stayed with them in California over the summer a few years ago, the cats chased each other around at night and jumped off my chest and groin to get onto furniture. :-\
Oh man, the image of a giant fucking bear heading towards New Orleans can't be undone.
I REALLY hope Gustav doesn't hit New Orleans
I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven, Moore said, laughing. To have it planned at the same time that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for day one of the Republican Convention, up in the Twin Cities at the top of the Mississippi River.

Michael Moore doesn't agree with you.

He really has become the left's Ann Coulter.
cat 4

cat 4
get ready
Is it expected to grow more?
I feel bad that I get so excited over these imminent disasters.
welp, nice knowing New Orleans
wish I could've visited
I've been doing some light research on the levee system and comparing it with the storm surge patterns predicted and teh forecast path. The city is at this point probably on a knife's edge between catastrophe and serious damage.
The whole New Orleans situation is depressing on several levels. Long term what's the best realistic scenario for the city?

Honestly? The best long term realistic scenario is that they get really lucky for a long period of time. With global warming and rising sea surface temps in the Gulf of Mexico, eventually no amount of civil engineering miracles is going to prevent a megastorm from destroying the city.

Bleeeeech.
I'm pretty sure I've heard that New Orleans was one of the cities with the most black-owned property. That's a ton of accumulated wealth that's just being wiped out.
A neighbor, Victoria, says she has two Rottweilers who she's not willing to leave behind.
That Michael Moore quote is completely awful. You're a long way from Roger And Me, Mike.
Time for Obama/ McCain to shine!
you dont really believe that of coursebtw, you guys do realize that if somehow mccain and co. come off as 'brave' or 'tried their darnest to help NO' or something like that, this could be a September Surprise that wins them the white house?
LOL
imagine the positive reaction to a RNC after GUstav
Anything is possible, but just as I don't like to talk about how this could be good for Dems, I don't like to talk about how it could be good for repubs. Hopefully this goes off as a totally non-partisan effort with as many heroes as possible.
So did it hit the shore yet? I await horror storries.
