Title: Triumph found sitting on my face - Magic The Gathering for XBLA
Post by: demi on August 29, 2008, 04:02:12 PM
http://www.gamerbytes.com/2008/08/magic_the_gathering_duels_of_t.php

Way back in February it was announced that Wizards Of The Coast and Stainless Games were working together to create a Magic The Gathering game for Xbox Live Arcade. Today it has finally been given a title, and it will be playable at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend.

Developed by Stainless Games, Ltd., Duels of the Planeswalkers lets players simulate the Magic: The Gathering Trading Card Game through an interactive digital experience. Players take on the role of a Planeswalker, a powerful wizard who battles others for glory, knowledge and conquest.

Each Planeswalker has an arsenal of spells and creatures showcased by virtual cards. Players can either choose to battle against the computer or compete online against real life opponents using Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE service offerings. With endless game play scenarios, including multiplayer game mode, Duels of the Planeswalkers offers an unrivaled depth in which each game is different from the last.

MTG: DOTP is scheduled for official release in Spring 2009, and can be demoed at PAX at Wizards of the Coast’s booth. Any hardcore Magic fans out there? Let us know what you think.

I still have a few decks around here somewhere. At my peak, I had 12 decks I would play with.

It's been a long time since I played MtG, but I wouldn't mind playing it again on XBLA, provided you don't have to pay $25 a piece for good cards.

:hyper  I haven't played Magic since about 1995, but it was a ton of fun.  Do the mechanics still work much the same?

Is this going to be like the old microprose PC game? (which was also called...Duels of the Planeswalkers)

How could this work?

Don't you have to buy cards in the real game? Anyway, loser geeks rejoice. I remember people playing this thing when i was in 8th grade.

I've been playing the Microprose version at work quite a bit lately. I have MTGO but I don't play it often as it's pretty expensive to buy cards for (costs the same as real MTG and the cards go out of print, just like the real ones).

I hope they don't monetize the cards, or if they do, it's handled like current "expansions" in games where you get access to the whole set by paying a flat fee.

You should start out with a basic deck and get cards or decks for winning games, like Culdcept Saga. Or maybe you could win in-game money, and then use the money to buy individual cards or packs. Then when new expansions come out, you could pay lke $5 to add the cards from the new expansion to your store. If they make you buy cards with real money, then forget it, I'm not going there again.

My favorite deck I had used nothing but a bunch of shitty commons that you'd get a million of and never be inclined to use, like this smug asshole:

It actually won against my friends a lot of the time too, but we didn't play competitively. Well I didn't anyways. :lol

It sounded like Phantom Dust or the Xbox version of MTG where your a dude running around summoning shit from a deck and not an actual DLC rape aton

One of my favorite gimmick decks was one that had tons of creatures that weren't targetable by spells or effects. like Deadly Insects and Pincher Beatles. It wasn't a deck that would win you many games, but it was fun for the WTF factor. I played it in a few Legacy tournaments (since most of the cards were old).

That looks awesome.

I wonder how getting cards and such will work?  I used to have four cards in my deck that turned opponent's mana to swampland, and then I'd swampwalk in.  Until some fucking cunt stole three of my four cards which ruined that deck - I'm sure he'll burn in hell for it. :maf

I hope it'll be possible to recreate my simple but annoying strategy in this.

I'll bite if theres a good pool of cards right off the bat (like at least 2000). If expansions are similarirly priced to real cardboard I'll stick with real.

It will actually be quite interesting to see how they play it, seing as MTG Online cards/packs are the same price as real cardboard and that game has a shitload of people paying that much for it. Hopefully since console gamers are more 'casual' (in general) they'll release a decent, one transaction, standalone product.

I kind of have a hankering to play the actual card game, but pretty much NO ONE plays anymore. I don't even know where my old cards are.

yeah Its weird, Ive got a bunch of friends who all play like once a week. Game is actually much better these days in terms of card selection and variety. If you havent played since the 90's you'll be like whoaaaaa wtf at some the newer cards

I'll be keen to play you guys when the xbla game comes out. I love me some magic

I wouldn't be surprised if they charged for the cards at cardboard prices. Sony is raking in the cash every month with their EQ/EQII digital card games that have those prices.

This could be cool, I haven't played Magic since I was in like 7th grade though. I didn't think many people still do, I was surprised when my sister told me her friends wanted her to start playing with her about a month ago.

Shard neglected to mention that there was a press release sent out at the same time that included details on DLC for the game. I'll summarize:
- DLC Booster packs; 600 points a pop for current cycle, prices vary for older cycles
- DLC draft tournaments; 1200 point buy-ins, 3 pack draft.
- DLC Cards; prices vary. The example given is Black Lotus @ 32000 MSFT points

lol no

$400 worth of MS points is  :lol

At least on the PC there's already a built up audience. What if I spent a million dollars on fake Xbox MtG cards, and then nobody else is playing it?

I -knew- they wouldn't do this unless they could include a digital objects model.

It works in MTGO because MTGO does a really, really great job at digitizing paper magic. Plus you can redeem cards.

I don't really see it working well here, pretty interface be damned.
