This shit's funny... apparently from the commercial
Might have to rent the game now
-
Mercs are hardcore, you better pay them what you owe them.
-
I like what I've seen of the game. Asian version is $45, ordered it last week.
-
I am going out today to see if they will sell it to me early today instead of tomorrow. Either way, I am excited to play it a lot before IU.
-
Whisky Tango Foxtrot - it's out this weekend and there are no reviews available? 1up, gamespot, ign -- nothing aggregated at metacritic.
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/mercenaries2worldinflames
???
-
Hopefully my copy shows up today in the mail. Renting it from Gamerang since its distribution center is only a state away.
Seeing as reviews are still embargoed doesn't give me much hope. Publishers only do this when reviews are luke warm.

Same thing happened with Tiger Woods. EA seems to be more aggressive with its NDAs now. In dfyb fashion, the videos make this game look like a 7.5-8 type of game.
-
I've been singing this song ever since the commercial first aired
you OWE MMMMEEEEEEEEEEE
-
Gamestop called me tonight so im going in tomorrow to pick itup
-
Anyone buying it tomorrow wanna do co-op right away?
All I request is that I play the black man.
-
Is there gonna be a demo for this? I never played the first one.
-

7.9 from IGN, and that's the exclusive :lol
Shit AI, game killing bugs, bad mission design. You take fall damage if you run down a hill
-
God damn it :(
Any word on differences between versions?
-
Nothing mentioned. The PS2 version is the exact same game content wise. The 360/PS3 just have higher rez textures and nicer explosions. I'd be shocked if there's any major difference between the two.
-
Damn it there never should have been a PS2 version made.
Nothing like getting a PS2 port up in 2008. My copy didn't arrive yesterday, so it won't be here till tuesday. Anyone want to co op (PS3) let me know.
-
I just picked up the 360 version. If anyone wants to do co-op, just drop in or something if you see me online.

Barring any serious differences between versions, I'd be getting the PS3 version, but I'll wait for a few more reviews. I want the destruction though, so I may just ignore the bug warnings.

B-. Nick Suttner though, so knock about 2 letters off that for real score.
-
Is there something Nick doesnt like
-
supposedly, 360 version has a steadier frame rate. supposedly.
-
I got the 360 version, and if the PS3 version uses the analog buttons when driving instead of the on/off the 360 has, I think that might actually help a lot. Driving a fast vehicle is a pain when it goes 0 to 100 in less than a second.
I am enjoying it so far.
-
Wow, so this game is mediocre, at best?
Looks like EA got less than what they bargained for when they bought Pandemic out.
Good, that's what EA gets.
-

Well, it sounds like it's more of the same more than it is mediocre. I suspect that in some ways, the content identical PS2 version held back the next gen versions. I knew this wouldn't end up being great when the hype died down for it months before release. Now, I just want to know if it's at least as good as the original.
-
Achievements in this game are a joke. Unless the hidden ones are crazy, most are pretty damn simple. You get 50 for just doing co-op.
-
So is this game a port-up from the PS2 version? I have read conflicting information...some say it's a port-up, others say the PS2 version was developed by someone else and re-uses Mercs 1 assets.
-
For just going into someone else's game, or them going into your's, you get those points.

Graphically it looks decent at points, and bad at others. Textures are ugly, and there is a lot of pop in, but the frame rate is smooth and some effects (like leaves and shit like that) look pretty nice. I would say that if it was a port-up from the PS2, it is a much better job than the ones seen at the 360's launch with games like Gun.
-
Any new testimonials regarding differences between versions? I think I need this game, ugliness and bugs be damned. But I don't want to get stuck with the lesser version of a crappy effort.
-
I like this game, A- easy achievements, B-shit blows up good

Guy who reviewed it for 1up said the PS3 version has faster loading and looks slightly better, but this game probably won't look great either way.
I like this game, A- easy achievements, B-shit blows up good
How much have you played?
I want to join your game and get the other multiplayer achievements, but I would need to blow shit up for that.
-
I've always loved the PS3's no AA + shimmering somehow looking better.

I prefer the "better sound b/c PS3 has 7.1 LPCM" reviews, as if the sound files went into 256 MB of RAM without ever being compressed.

-
If it wasn't for that stupid viral achievement, I could probably get them all by tomorrow. I am surprised by how simple they all are. I wouldn't expect it from this type of game where they could have had creative ones.
-
Yeah its probably a better 40 dollar game than 60 dollar game but I WILL SAY THIS. Ive already had more fun with IT, than GTA4
-
I don't know if I would exactly agree or not, but it certainly gives you a lot more to do...uhh, I mean 'interesting' things to do. There hasn't been any good mission yet, so it fails on that front, but blowing up stuff is fun. It helps that the shooting is 1000 times better.
Blowing up buildings > going bowling.
And playing this really makes me want Just Cause 2 or Saints Row 2...I really don't know why.
-
Dont have to save character I hate over and over? Check. Cars handle better? Not by much, but Check. I ACTUALLY get to go on a rampage? Check. Horrible one-liners? Check!
-
The one-liners are great. The best is like "hey guy on the MG, how would you like to get carpet bombed?" or something like that. That is actually the only tolerable one, and it is repeated dozens of times. I wish I picked the black guy instead of the Swedish guy, but the faster health recovery is worth it.
And the car handling would be much better if they let you use the triggers.
-
I picked asian british accent lady, its pretty lol.
You can at least use the trigger for the handbreak, using the button isn that big a deal.
-
The vehicles that I have problems with are the motorcycles since they are so damn fast.
And there is an achievement where you literally just hold down A+X in a car to get.
-
The old motorcycles are better than the crotch rockets thats for sure
-
Ive already had more fun with IT, than GTA4
That's like saying that saying that something is better than eating a bag of nails.
-
GTA4 got perfect scores! whadda ya mean?!?!??!
-
Didn't it win an Oscar too? I think I remember hearing something about that.
-
*sob*
-
PC version should be pretty safe, Merc2 isnt pushin anything crazy
-
How bad is the AI? It's not like Mercernaries 1 had stunning A.I. - they just threw a lot of baddies at you.
I'll be surprised if the controls can't be re-mapped to use the analog triggers for Accelerate and Decelerate...
-
AI can be a real hassle, especially when youre trying to capture the high value targets. I managed to capture him and I was lugging him around but I still had troops in pursuit and some RPG fuck in the background keeping my chopper from landing long enough to pick up the target. Had to put the guy down and stalk the remaining troops then used my last RPG round to take out mr missle fuck.
Its a fun game, but ive only put 3 hours into it and its saying 19%, gonna be a short but fun ride :/
Still, C4 packs are awesommmmme.
-
You know, if it's just more of the same thing that made the first one great, they already beat GTA IV in my book.
-
Its a fun game, but ive only put 3 hours into it and its saying 19%, gonna be a short but fun ride :/
I thought that too, but I realized that you get percent levels fast as you are building up your team (getting jet pilot, helicopter pilot, etc...) . For example, it seemed to take less time to get from 0% to 20% as it did to get from 46% to 50%
-
Its a fun game, but ive only put 3 hours into it and its saying 19%, gonna be a short but fun ride :/
It's all action, right? None of the GTA side mission/date bullshit? If so that's not too bad at all.
-
There are side missions, but they aren't required. You can take part in in various challenges to earn money for your co-workers. There is a race, another race with guns, target practice, and more things like that. There are also side missions about blowing up buildings and capturing prisoners, but almost everything involves you destroying something.
Only thing I wish is that I didn't have to lose money for killing civilians.
-

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok that makes sense thanks!
-
GAH; description of actual gameplay-related side activities overcame my tolerance; I just ordered my first title through Play-Asia.com, you bastards.
Hopefully I'll be able to control my jitters until it arrives.
-
That mission I just did was awesome. Memorable mission? check.
-
Don't want to rain on you guys parade but Eurogamer gave it 5/10 ???.
apart from some cool explosive effects and solid controls, Mercenaries 2 is utterly mediocre in almost every sense that matters. From the initial sorties onwards it's bogged down by the worst kind of brain-dead cannon fodder enemies, lead-you-by-the-hand level design, arbitrary boundaries, and some technical howlers. It lacks challenge, excitement, personality and any real verve whatsoever. Just thinking back on time spent negotiating the stupider bits of Mercenaries 2 is enough to cloud our sunny disposition.
Given its troubled, delayed development, hope remained that Mercenaries 2 would deliver on the series' promise. Instead, the usually reliable Pandemic has produced a game that not only fails to compete with any current-generation openworld, but somehow takes a backward step from the original. With uninspiring combat contributing to a succession of desperately poor missions, the only remaining question is whether the developer will get a third chance to rectify matters.
Sounds fun!
-
Eurogamer can't be trusted. This has been proven.
-
Wasnt the first game kinda given middling scores too tho?
-
IGN gave the first one a 9-something on XBOX.
duckman, you aren't flying that flag of Eurogamer bias are you? Take away the +1 for all UK games that they and Edge seem to give, and they are as decent as the rest. And I adore their multiplatform roundups.
-
I should probably go pick this up.
I liked the first game well enough and god knows I spend enough time with games like Just Cause and this looks like more of that. Seems like something I could really get into.
-
And I just bought it. :p
Sometimes it's nice having a Blockbuster 3 blocks away.
-
lol
-
eurogamer is awesome because they expose the lies of ps3 graphic "superiority" and demonstrate the power of xenos :bow2 :bow2 :bow2
-
Good lord this game is fugly. It seems fun enough so far but man this one isn't winning any beauty contests.
-
I think if anything its pretty uneven. When the action is hot, it looks great, when nothing is going on well...
-

I don't give a shit about any supposed "bias," but Eurogamer has brought up stuff in reviews that has been factually wrong. Ergo, Eurogamer can't be trusted.
Edge, though? lulz all around, irrespective of platform.
-
I spent the last half hour working to finish a mission and the guy that I need to kill is stuck in a wall. I can see his arms but I can't get to him.
*sigh*
Time to reboot.
-
I only had one mission breaking glitch so far, and that was when my jet ski got stuck under a dock.
And those Eurogamer quote sound like they are from a GTA4 review. Mercs 2 is just more Mercs 1 with some minor changes.
-
game shits on gta4 from great height
-
I woulda bought it if Fry's had it for 50.
-
Play-Asia confirmed the Asia version works on US/Canada systems. I am win.
-
game shits on gta4 from great height
WOW what a revelation
-
Shits on FFTA2 as well!
-
viz is a shithead
-
eurogamer says there are some QTE's demi
remember when this was considered a big PS3 exclusive? :lol
Scratch another one off my Q4 list. will wait for the bargain bin
-
Yeah I know theres QTEs, I saw it in some pics
I'll probably rent it down the road like I said. I'll get GameFly set up when I'm adjusted to the new place.
-
supposedly, 360 version has a steadier frame rate. supposedly.
I would have thought that as well, but based on this video, it's hard to say. These videos are never the most reliable when it comes to open world games, but the PS3 framerate is smoother throughout the video.

What a crock of shit. I happened to be playing yesterday when I saw that comparison and I was at that exact area looking at the rock and I can tell you that the 360 version looks exactly like the PS3 one from that vid. Looks like someone took a freeze frame right before the textures are fully loaded and they must've been pretty fucking quick about it 'cause I really don't notice it in the game.
Mercs 2 is an ugly, ugly game but it's equally ugly across both platforms.

I didn't mention the texture thing for just that reason. I was making note of the boat segment demonstrated at the beginning of the video. The 360 footage seemed to be stuttering along (ala GTA) while the PS3 footage was smooth.
Based on that and the fact that they had that rock texture as part of the comparison, it seems to me that the 360 version has more issues with streaming data. That could very well be a problem with their XBOX360 or simply poor coding on the part of the developers. You can see them moving the camera around initially during the low-res texture bit, so it's not as if they simply took a snapshot initially.
Really, the only thing I take away from that video is that the PS3 framerate seems to be perfectly fine. The game is indeed pretty ugly on both platforms, however (which is a shame).

I posted about this on GAF...
Ugh, I knew GT was garbage with this but now I have proof.
They didn't let the friggin texture load on the 360!

GT is the worst site on the internet. People like them because they have pretty moving pictures.

*sigh*
Did you even read what I wrote? I only posted the video in order to demonstrate that the framerate in the PS3 version was indeed fine.
I highly doubt GT was "out to get" the 360 version considering that situations just like this have cropped up in favor of the 360 versions in the past (where the two were on equal footing in regards to something specific but their video demonstrated an instance where the PS3 version appeared inferior). I'm sure the creation process of these videos involves lots of playtime on both versions of the games while looking for any differences. Do you really think they are creating these videos with the intention of slamming a specific version? As of late, most comparisons have been almost completely lacking in differences of any sort.
So, why exactly do you believe they are the worst site on the internet? They clearly put a lot of effort into many of their pieces and most of them are not aimed at "fueling the console war".
-

They seem to put a lot of effort into a great number of pieces, however. Those retrospectives, for instance, are pretty well designed and generally free of errors. The fact that they ARE video based does indeed improvement the standing of the site as they tend to do a better job showing off various games. The piece that you are complaining about doesn't even involve writing of any sort either.
Virtually every mainstream site is paired up with really shitty forums, though.
-
I'm not complaining about it! I don't give a shit about their console comparison articles. I was complaining about the one shot.
The retrospectives are nice for being centrally-focused locations for video of old games in franchises I like. They are so restricted by marketing it is a little hard to believe. Their Final Fantasy retrospective should have had a Square-Enix logo on it.
-

Well, yeah, I'd imagine they ARE somewhat sponsored, but that doesn't mean the information isn't accurate and/or interesting either. They've gone into surprising detail with the Star Wars retrospective, for instance.

Hell yeah. As a big fan of documentaries, I love GT's retrospectives and other historical pieces. They even seemed to make some kind of sense out of the Zelda timeline. I think that they are all very professional and are the closest thing to authority on the subjects they choose to cover.
-
This game is OK. I need to get more time into it (only an hour so far on PStrips) but it almost feels too much like Mercs 1 for my liking.
As in its still great fun, but this game hardly feels evolved over the original.
-
I had a friend who quit Mercs 1 because there were a couple missions which glitched and could not be finished, like your guy-in-the-wall one. He had a target have a whole building collapse /around/ him, and couldn't verify to end the mission one way or the other. No death photo, no ability to knock out and grab. Just stuck in the rubble.
Oddly, in my play through I never encountered a single bug, only a multitude of MOMENTS OF AWESOMENESS. I had a target tied up and on the ground, only to take out an enemy helicopter which fell on him. The game feels like Schwarzenegger's COMMANDO, in all the right ways.
-
Fuck, I almost wish I would have rented this game on 360 instead. PS3 version has a nice long 10 minute install (2.7GB) and I'm not a big fan of shooters with the PS3 pad. Its OK...but I prefer the 360 pad more for any type of shooting game. Plus I hear there are issues with voice chat in co op. Of course in my experience with PS3 gaming this year many games have voice chat issues.
-
Fuck, I almost wish I would have rented this game on 360 instead.
to be repeated after buying/renting every game :'(
-
Actually I'll probably just send this back in a couple days and keep on playing co op Earth Defense Force 17, which I got for 12 bucks and is better than Mercs 2.
-
Oh and can I just steal the 360 pad and Xbox Live and use them on PS3? Then I would be fine.
PS3 reliability + Blu Ray + Xbox Live (-fee) + 360 pad = perfect system
-
What's wrong with the DualShock 3? I mean, the DS3 and 360 pad are essentially the same set of buttons and sticks, except for those spongy triggers on the DS3. And the d-pad on 360's sucks balls.

As do the shoulder buttons. And hell, the face buttons. It does have mighty nice triggers though, and while I don't care so much about the placement of the thumbsticks, the fact that they are ridged and concave puts them quite a bit ahead.

I'm digging this. I can see why the reviews are kinda meh. It seems like this has been in development forever, and amidst all the Pandemic buyout shit, hopes were high. What we got was a very incremental improvement that appears to have not even tried to reach the AAA level of games. I like the game, but I can't help but feel that Pandemic could have done more.
Also, remember the OG screenshots that looked awesome? What the heck happened? This isn't a bad looking game, but it's certainly not impressive.

Yep, this feels like a last-gen game in every way, but it's not too bad. I don't think it's a keeper though.

can someone compare this to Just Cause? HSMP I'm looking at you :-*, xfe too
-

The original shots look very much the same as the final product, actually (perhaps even a tad worse). Here's a couple shots from 2006...

can someone compare this to Just Cause?
It's pretty different. Visually, Just Cause is more attractive than Mercs 2 from high altitudes, but perhaps less appealing when wandering around on the ground. One important distinction is the complete lack of destructible scenery in Just Cause. You can't destroy ANYTHING. Mercs 2 is quite the opposite in that regard.

I like 1up's media stuff. I don't usually put any faith in their reviews, whether its from loli humor lover Parish to "it is, therefore it is an A+" Suttner.
My favorite reviews are Eurogamer.

Demo on XBL for rich gold users
-
I had to quit playing this. It's incredibly difficult in SP and the missions are fucking exhaustively long.
-
Demo turned me off, I had no idea what I was doing at all. No thanks.
-
difficult in single player? What are you on about? Hell, one of the characters abilities is completely overpowered. Running so fast you can chase cars down on foot lol. Most of the time you can sprint strafe a .50 cal placement and jump in to punch the guy in the face.
-
Jeezus the Jumping Car level is WAY too long
-

If you play co-op, you can revive your partner pretty simply. Add me if you want to give it a shot, I'm playing this most nights after 10pm, and from about 9-10 a.m Japan time.
Jeezus the Jumping Car level is WAY too long
Agreed; I was doing great and cleared it on the first try, but I was stunned at how near-to-timeout I was by the time I got back to the base.
And I get to try it all over again, because apparently playing co-op in your game while using my existing savegame data overwrites the progress I made in my game with the progress we made in yours. Or something. I didn't get any of the challenges we cleared together, but suddenly I don't have a mechanic in my side room anymore... :(

I had to quit playing this. It's incredibly difficult in SP and the missions are fucking exhaustively long.
I didnt have this problem playing co-op with a friend who just got the game, but the game has been reported as kind of glitchy.

Ah... it turns out I get to cement my rep as village idiot to Evilbore: I think I got the mechanic as Mattias, then restarted as Mui, and hadn't yet completed the "get mechanic" mission as Mui... So -- not a glitch.
However, Sho Nuff and I played a longish bout tonight and managed to get him stuck in the terrain, planted more firmly than a tree, in the race mission -- the one where you get the mechanic. Between starting us in different spots, limiting the distance we can separate from each other, a time limit, spiking Sho Nuff into "immovable object" territory, and the car's spongy Havok fizziks joi, we failed a mission five times that I passed the first try as Mattias.
So, yeah, the game's not perfect but I'm still having more fun than the reviews credit the game for, and more overall fun than GTA IV.

I am still loving this game, glitches and all. As I've progressed further in the game, it's approaching the same feel that the first one had: "Here's the base setup, and these are your obstacles. How do you want to solve this problem?"
Just awesome.
Sho Nuff tells me now that I've unlocked the Chinese and Allied Nations factions, the missions are going to kick my ass immediately. I'm up for co-op play, where you can revive your partner, if anyone's up for it.
"I don't need a plan, I've got moxie... And guns."

They're releasing DLC for this (needed a reason to post it)
GilloD: there's region issues with online, you probably cant play with him. but the DLC is supposed to allow region-free gaming.

Any other news on what the DLC is offering? MY X360 gaming routine has been completely destroyed by getting a PC upgrade. Im going to hunker down with Vesperia this weekend and finish it tho.

I was wondering about that; is it for PS3 regions only? I've been playing with a guy in Tokyo, and a guy in the USA, so I've not yet had a problem.
GilloD - Added!

I played today for the first time in like 3 weeks. I felt much more into it, I may actually play this to the end.

Maf, bro, can't believe you recommend this crap. Glad I just rented the 360 version instead of buying the PC version. It's the worst "next-gen" game I've seen in the last year.

Did you play it? It's super fun, no matter how generally icky it looks.

It's particularly weak looking after going from the full Weekend of GTA IV to "hey, we uprezzed Mercs 1."
But I still enjoy Mercs controls more: cars I can drive and powerslide easily, mandatory manual aim, though the aim-assist is noticeable and significantly detracts from AI's ability to deal with you.
I agree, it's totally fun.
