In my quest to fondly look back at the PS2 and it's formidable library of rpgs, I've been playing through the old stuff recently. I just finished Xenosaga episode I (thank goodness for GS, 7.99 used) and hoo boy, was it even crappier than I had remembered.
The game has to be the most unbalanced piece of crap EVER. The sad thing is, the battle system initially is kind of fun, chaining different attacks together, deciding when to boost, only using some of your turn so you can whip some ass on your next go, etc. The problem is that in my playthrough, which clocked in at just over 32 hours total, I gained probably 1/4 of my levels (40 or so at the end) IN THE LAST THREE HOURS OF GAMEPLAY. In the first 10 hours or so, there was probably only 3-4 hours of actual gameplay. The rest was sitting through what has to be HANDS DOWN the WORST mess of a plot in an rpg. Ever. Which is saying something.
So yeah, the game was SO TERRIBLE that I'm really tempted to play Episode II and III now, since I never bothered in the past. I mean, can it really stay that bad?

3 was supposedly 'good'

Xenosaga II was the worst of the series. The battle system was just awful, it made even the most basic battles against the most common of random enemies last for like two or three minutes. XS2 still only takes like 18-20 hours to beat though, so you can blow through it pretty fast. Or just skip it, the only thing interesting that happens is one dude blows his head off with a fireball and then it grows back. Xenosaga III was the best of the series, but it's going to shatter your perceptions of Xenosaga or anything like that, it's still more of the same, but marginally improved. The third one is also where the plot just goes completely batshit insane, to epic results.
I know most people are like "lol Xenosaga", but I love it. It's like the Caligula of jfaggotry; it's so completely and utterly over the top and it doesn't care, it just revels in it's loli-drenched excess. It has a robotic Virgin Mary that has save the universe from ghosts IN OUTER SPACE. Bow down. :bow2

i've seen machinma videos on the net that are animated a million times better than a lot of the story scenes in XS2. also the music in the first town is honestly THE WORST piece of music i have ever heard, anywhere. seriously.

I bought XS2 for $9 just to see how bad it is, but haven't played it yet. Is XS2 without a doubt the worst PS2 RPG?

Xenosaga >>>> Mana Khemia
Thats HIlarious

I've gone back to this game about 5 times, yet I think I'm still well under 10 hours into it. It's pretty much relegated to permanent backlog status now.

That was my attitude with the first game... which I need to finish.
