Title: School freak out time.
Post by: Madrun Badrun on September 02, 2008, 10:58:05 PM: So I was calm up until a week ago and then I just fucking lost it. I didn't sign up for orientation on time so, while it's tomorrow, I'm not going. i just went on the uni site and got these messages.

I thought I'd write to welcome you to LATN 112 and give you some early words of advice and encouragement.

First-year Latin is one of the most demanding courses on campus, but also among the most rewarding. It can literally change your life -- and not just in a negative way! -- but it does require a lot of commitment and a good deal of intellectual sweat. And, like all language classes, it also can be a great deal of fun, since your relationship to other students in the class and to the material will be unlike what you'll find in most university lecture courses: a good deal of mutual bonding goes on amid all that wrestling with verb forms and rules of grammar.

Our first class is this coming Thursday (yikes!). Be sure that you have the two required texts before then, and that you bring them to class. I'd suggest that you have a look thru them as well -- esp. the larger of the two, which is rather complex in its layout and has a variety of resources in it. (If you'd like to get a jump on things, the first order of business is to learn how to pronounce Latin, so that would be a good place to start.)

You should also look at the course PAWS page and begin to get familiar with the various on-line resources for the course (listed in the links section). In particular, the resource sheets to be found at:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will be administering a Math Placement Test during the first week of classes to measure your knowledge of pre-calculus high school math, the background knowledge you need for success in calculus courses at the University of Saskatchewan. This test will cover topics in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Try the Sample Math Placement
Test to assess whether you are ready for first year calculus courses. The test provides an assessment of your readiness for first year calculus courses, but it can not predict how you will actually do.
Please note that you should not use a calculator, books or assistance from another person.

I haven't taken math in two years and am fucking up the practice test. I have no idea what happens if you get below %80. :(

If a calculator is not required for math, then it is extremely unlikely you will be tested rigorously. Just that you're above functionally distinguished mentally-challenged. To make it easier, you should probably know FOIL (first, outer, inner, last), which will probably be involved in many of the math questions (it will be involved in Trigonometry through Differential Equations, it never goes away entirely), the numerical representations of degrees (sine and cosine of 45 degrees is ((2 * sqrt(2))/2 for example), and that you know a little bit about multiplying and dividing with variables (again FOIL). Or you could just bomb it, which a good number of students do. If you fail it, you just take College Algebra, then Trigonometry, and then Calculus. So in essence, you just take two more classes. Neither are that bad so even if you fuck it up, you aren't really screwed at all.

I've heard some bad things about Latin but it is also an introductory course so nothing too severe. Just make sure you stay on top of your readings and homework. Do not be afraid to ask questions. It is all mental, more often than not. The purpose of weedout classes like this is to keep the people who just want to chug beer 4 nights a week away and keep those that give somewhat of a damn about their education. This isn't a prison camp. Just do your work and you will be just fine.

-Some girl said she wanted to work at EGM, and if I had time, I would have made fun of her for wanting to work at a dying magazine if I didn't have to haul ass to my next class.
-Some guy in my class looks exactly like Nick Forst.

Other than that, it is really just boring is all. One of my professors is like 80 or something, and that creeps me out, especially when he says things like "I have been teaching for 50 some years now!" I hate old experienced teachers; it only helps drive in the point that you are the problem in that class when 50 years of students didn't have issues, yet you suddenly are messing up. It is a good thing the class seems easy.

Not because I'm going but because I now get to drive by the bus stop every morning and see my neighbors' future convict looking all glum waiting to go to school. I saw that fucking criminal this morning and I was honking my horn in celebration as I was driving past the little shit.

No more lazy days of this idiot on his trampoline throwing bottles at my fence while listening to death metal! Huzzah! Now go back to 2nd period metal shop, you vagina.

I'll be at the middle school in the morning to welcome to hormonally challenged youngins freak out, and then head up the hill to the elementary school to see the adorable kiddos show up for the first day.

So just go through your books you looked at in the past and remember the big concepts you learned throughout your years.

If not, then take that course. It isn't going to kill you.

I worked at a high school my first year, it was fun, but I was an intern and they had already promised it to someone else for the next school year. I've been offered another high school, but I like where I'm at.

Both numbers have a common base of 3. Change 27 to 3^3 and substitute it in.

3^(3(9-5x)) = 3^3x

3^(27-15x) = 3^3x

Then you can just use the exponents to solve for x.

27 - 15x = 3x

27 = 18x

1.5 = x

What about this?

Blarg, I don't remember how to do that one. I THOUGHT that you solved for x two times and then plugged in each x to see which one followed the equation, but both of mine turned out wrong.

I started with solving for x on the left side:

5x - 2 = x + 7

4x = 9

x = 2.25

Then I plugged the number into the original full equation.

9.25 < 9.25 < 3.5

Then I solved for x on the right side:

x + 7 = 2x - 1

8 = x

Then I plugged the number into the original full equation.

38 < 15 < 15

I have no idea man. Maybe one of the other math wiz's can tell us how to solve that kind of problem.

start with multiplying the whole thing by x+7 I guess so that you end up with a quadratic equation.

also today wasn't so bad besides having four Chinese people sit around me in comp sci, which would be fine but they were all speaking Chinese to each other and it made me feel left out. One was nice and tried to talk to me in his broken english though. Latin looks really scary. But in my philo class a girl who I use to work with sat beside me and talked to me, though it was like in black books when girls talk to Bernard and he just makes weird noises and then gives a weirder smile. She does look like this (http://www.genreonline.net/Genre_files/Tudors10.jpg) though, is in forth year and plays on the soccer team, so hopefully some other girls, ones I'm actually capable of being with see us together and think I'm better than i actually am.

I dunno. maybe you could try getting one side to have only variables and the other side to have only numbers.

there's probably like a dozen programmers on this board who should still know their maths.
