They're totally sold out of both Acer and Asus models they carry.

Screw that.  If I'm going to buy online, I'm going to go get me one of those new Dell units.

Why?  $350 for Ubuntu-powered Dell subnotebook sexiness within a month.

hows the battery life and keyboard, I havent followed the dell offering

I know the aspire one has a shitty 3cell unless you get it at BB/ebay

msi wind has the best keyboard so i read although its a bit overpriced admittedly

Hey, Viz, you have an Aspire?  Would you recommend it if I got one with a  6 cell?  Now that all the big offerings for the year are out, I'd like to jump in.

Dell's non-extended battery has the most power of all the subnotebooks thus far.  Drive space is skimpy and there aren't any extended batteries for sale yet, so points have been docked on that.  Build quality is pretty good.

Plus, it'll be using Ubuntu as of October and that should increase battery performance.  I tried to get the Aspire One on sale at Best Buy, but the entire region is sold out.  Totally disappointing.  Oh well.

no, ive just been reading up on these because i might get one, I have read a lot about the aspires poor battery life though  of 2-3 hours, the best buy one comes with a 6 cell which is obviously better

Prole has an EEE 900, and that's apparently pretty decent on battery life.

I'm kind of torn between MSI Wind, Aspire, and possibly the Dell E (or whatever its been renamed to).

Dell Inspiron Mini 9.

The Wind is good but pricy, the Aspire is only good if you can find one at a Best Buy (but good fucking luck) and the Dell is great but you sacrifice HD space and screen size (in comparison to the Wind).  But it'll have Ubuntu.

Best Buy is sold out online, as well.  New Egg and the like don't have the same particular model for purchase.

The MSI Wind appears to be the only one difficult to find online.

I haven't used an anti-virus program for months, after I uninstalled AVG.

No problems if you don't download from random places.

Okay, so what's good to have for protection that isn't a resource hog?  I'm not worried about downloading anything...like I said before, it's for my wife.

If it's on sale and sold out, did you ask if they are offering rain checks?  If it's just a normal sale they should give you one.

my wife uses my pcs all the time, and i've never had virus issues. run windows update regularly and tell her not to download anything random -- or to click on random ads. problem solved.

the first thing i do whenever i get a new pc is uninstall whatever bullshit virus protection comes pre-installed

i use avast, but i leave it turned off most of the time

i've had a couple of email worms over the years, and a fuckton of spyware, but now i just run ad aware and avast once in a while and haven't had any problems
