Takahashi quotes a Microsoft engineer who raised the issue of hardware reliability in August of 2005, months before the system's November launch. At the time, 68 of every 100 Xbox 360s made by Microsoft's Chinese manufacturing partners were coming off the line nonfunctional. Worse still, when the first batch of the system's three-core CPUs rolled off the line, only 16 percent worked.
The article goes on to say the post-launch shortage of Xbox 360 systems was due partly to Microsoft's inability to make enough functioning units to satisfy demand. In the spring of 2006, Microsoft had half a million returned or defective units sitting in warehouses, all while publicly stating that returns were within normal rates for consumer electronics.
Problems with quality control continued to plague the system, so much so that Microsoft actually ceased production of the Xbox 360 in 2007 between January and June to find and address the issue, according to the report.
Well, that explains a lot. Anyone who said the PS2 was even more defective than the 360 is full of shit.
Microsoft made the most unreliable system ever in consumer electronics, or so it appears.

The real crime is all the good games for it. So bittersweet!

Takahashi knows his stuff.
good read.

Their Zunes and PC accessories are really great.
Microsoft actually outsourced the 360 to another company. I forgot which, though. This is common practice in the hardware realm, tho.

:lol
Two reliable consoles with no games and one piece of crap with tons of games. It's a cruel joke.
-
We all bend over for teh games!

when i got up this morning there was a red light on my 360 power adapter
i was thinking i'd have to get another adapter (and they aren't cheap), but apparently i just jostled it loose last night when i unplugged all my stuff in anticipation of power surges, so yay and boo for me at the same time
this is my third 360
-
Seriously, how do you guys put up with this shit?
The fucker is defective. It's still defective. It may be less defective, but it's defective.
But, at the same time, let's shit on the PS3 that never breaks.
I'd rather be playing two good games on a system that works forever than attempting to play tons of games on something that fucks up so often.
If the 360 worked well, I wouldn't be such a PS3 fan. Truth.
-
Games, thats kind of the deal. I have 50 XBLA games, and like 20-25 X360 games. PS3 I just use for blurays and Disgaea 3 and MLB The Show 08.
I've replaced one unit in all the time. How's that bad? That means the YEARS ive played 360, ive had very few instances of problems. You need PERSPECTIVE
-
What ya gonna do *shrug* lol

I don't know about tons of games. You certainly wouldn't be able to tell by going to a Best Buy or anything. After three years, the Xbox 360 section is still rather thin and not all that different than the slightly smaller PS3 section. Seems like it's still slim pickings.
Anyway, the article just further underscores why Microsoft really shouldn't be in the hardware business. Drop out and support buy Sony.
-
If the 360 had Metal Gear Solid, I wouldn't be such a PS3 fan. Truth.
Change your name to Casper, I see right through you, boo
-
Who cares?
My launch broke. I had bought the system replacement gaurantee. Took it back to EB and got a new one no questiuons asked.

Lets compare it against the wii library packed with shovelware, or the ps3 library which is not only smaller, but packed with inferior ports. How bout PSN? Lots of games there? Not really. I have 2 psn games, 50 xbla games.
-
i'm on my 3rd box. :rock
ps3 is still alive and kicking. and picking up dust in the process. wii too.

Well, I've never gotten RROD. Plus I have a $40 in store warranty that makes it a half hour problem, wah wah.

Yeah I've come to the realization until PS3 ports step up their game, I will endure this piece of shit console. I've been trying the PS3 thing lately with games....it doesn't work. PS3 controller is inferior, the online setup isn't as nice, and mic support is shoddy at best with different games. Oh I'm in the home beta too and lets just say I'm not awaiting its final release with baited breath.
I really hate paying for Live as well but when the competition isn't up to snuff what can you do? At least I can find Live 12 month cards for 30 bucks online, lowering the damage.
Hopefully in 2009 I can make the full switch, but I wouldn't count on it. Sony needs to kick some things into gear.

Doesn't matter, XBoat is unsinkable.
:bow XBoat :bow2

they aren't thinking ahead -- you know, when the warranty is out. and/or they're banking on xbox720 having full BC.

I've had the same Xbox360 since March '06. *knocks on wood, crosses fingers, rubs rabbit foot, holds four-leaf clovers, kisses Blarney Stone, ect.*

i guess that'd be called throwing money away

Would it have been worth it to delay the launch in order to fix the problem? How long? I think that the 360 launching a year ahead gave them a huge advantage in many areas, and that it would have really struggled if it had to launch later. Even a few months would have missed the crucial holiday season.
I guess that it's easy to say that they should have had better quality control, but things happened, and really I think they did the right thing. Maybe they should have had the warranty in place sooner, though.

It's more likely the 720 will have full BC since MS owns the hardware this time around, although a part of me is wondering if BC is being tossed in the can since Sony has written it off. Maybe some set of numbers we do not have access to is saying BC isn't a selling point.

It was a gift and a curse. MS is going to have to battle these worries on the forefront of the 720 launch. If the 720 is not the most reliable piece of hardware ever, MS will be eating more crow than it can imagine now.
-
TVC brings up an interesting point, but why IS Sony doing away with backwards compatibility? That's pretty much all the PS3 had going for it in it's first year or so.
-
i'm still on my first 360, seems fine so far.
-
Got the RROD twice. :-\
Getting a new arcade soon.
+1 Hardware sale.
-
Launch unit still works fine, although now I have two systems that I divide my game time between, so I don't have to keep disconnecting/hooking up between living quarters, and I just move myprofile back and forth on a mem card.
-

Me too! Maybe it's because most of gaming I do on it is XBLA games read from the Hard Drive... besides Culdcept and Burnout Paradise, there's rarely a disc in the drive.
-
I got a red ring once, before Halo 3 came out.
Sent it to Ms.
They sent me back.
Wasn't working.
I sent it back again.
....
Been working ever since.

boy, the 720 better have BC, or MS will be the dumbest sacks of shits in history
