Title: Vista 32 vs. Vista 64
Post by: Joe Molotov on September 08, 2008, 11:24:38 PM
What's the current situation on Vista 64? Is it worth trying to mess with? I've been trying to find information online, but a lot of the information is dated 2006.

I was running 64 but had a few weird driver issues here and there, that may have cleared up by now but 32 installed is fine. Dont need more than 3gigs of ram for anything I do.

So if I only have 3 gigs of RAM is it not worth my time to run Vista 64?  I'm having problems running Peer Guardian on it and am considering downgrading.

might as well downgrade to 32, yeah. I have 4 gigs installed but back when vista drivers were first coming out I had some minor issues with stability and decided to take the 1gig hit I wouldnt even feel anyway.

This is why Apple rocks. 64bit OS and apps with no driver issues. :bow

Do your games run just as well in Vista 32 as they do in Vista 64?

yeah, most games arent optimized for 64 bit fun times anyway. WoW, specifically had some random issues on 64 and didnt on 32.

PeerGuardian doesn't work on Vista period.

The last Mac I had was in 1995.  Using OSX or whatever it is now on public college computers makes me so glad I'm a Window's man.  If I wanted shitty software on my computer I would install Bonzi Buddy; at least I could play games while my PC slowly dies from the infection.

That's what I'm finding out.

I'm having problems getting xp to run on my system, I'm hoping perhaps the xp 64 version will run in a dual boot, otherwise I'll have to leave my old pc up and running to d/l.

Err, no.  The reason you find so few driver issues is simply because they have very few devices to support!  OSX barely offers any drivers outside of the select few that Apple uses in their boxes.  It's still a closed platform.

Vista has to support 1000x the number of devices.  It's driver support is vastly superior to that of OSX, but due to the fact that there are just so many different possible devices one can use with it, you're bound to run into more troubles.  That said, I've never had a single driver issue with Vista X64.  I'd imagine only older devices might have some issues.

If you've ever messed with OSX on non-Apple hardware, you'd see that it barely supports anything.  You need very specific hardware.  Yes, that's the benefit of a closed platform, but it also demonstrates that Apple had a lot less work cut out for them.

I've had a very good experience with Vista X64 thus far.  Nearly every game I've thrown at it has run without a problem.  This includes the latest software to games from the mid to late 90s.  Very few of them have had any issues.  I just installed System Shock 2 again for kicks and had no issues, for instance.

WoW was the only game I had issues with in 64.

WTF, PeerGuardian doesn't run on Vista?

It does, but through a lot of hacks/removed windows updates/unstable environment.

I had it running on vista 64 for about 2 days but recently can't even duplicate that after reinstalling the OS.  It's not worth it for me, I put too much trust in that program to have to worry about it not loading or crashing.

Probably time to make the switch to newsgroups (or rather go back to them.)

There's a beta of RC1 available for peerguardian with vista, but keep in mind, I haven't used it, nor do I know anything about it's stability/usability.

Yeah I used that with some various recommended hacks.  It's not ready for prime time yet, not by a long shot imo.
