i live not many kilometers away from this thing. bring it on :gun
-
wtf does that thing do?
-
collides particles into each other at really fucking high velocities
-
Hopefully this means Sliders becomes a reality
-
^ zomg yes
but really, the reality of this thing actually forming a black hole? I think a lot more energy is required to make one of those. Such as a supergiant star 1,000,000 times bigger than the sun collapsing in on itself. I doubt if some tunnel under europe can generate a comprable effect
-
I hope it doesn't kill cloudwalking.
Killing Jarosh would be okay I guess.

The Black Holes are supposed to be microscopic or something (on the atom level).

ah. ok now Im worried
-
Fuck I hope I get 100k GS before I die
-
im meant to go back to work tomorrow. now i feel like i should just skip it

Fuck I hope I get 100k GS before I die
:lol

I thought this thread is about the Dreamcast birthday... And then saw that the thread is from today..
-
It's a good thing I have the day off tomorrow.

j/k man, j/k!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_black_hole
Listened to a speech about this on TED and some guy said a potential black hole would only exist for about a femtosecond. "A femtosecond is one billionth of one millionth of a second. For context, a femtosecond is to a second, what a second is to about 32 million years." - lol
-
Event Horizon!
-
I can't think of a finer day to wipe ourselves out. Good luck and good riddance.
-
The whole Jarosh looking like Gordon Freeman is old hat but I have to say, thing's are aligning rather weirdly...
-
I hope it opens a portal to hell instead. I want to shotgun some imps.

You'll be one of those heads on a stick, have fun.
-
Fuck that. I'm going to be slaying demons.
-
Actually they arent colliding any particles for like a month. Just zooming stuff around like they start doing tomorrow wont do anything.
Enjoy your month.
-
Haven't they been saying shit about testing it for the last like two months? I keep reading stories about "tomorrow is the day omg we're gonna die"
I betcha they've been secretely testing it anyway, and it's all been fine.

For the past few months they've had to cool the collider huge section by huge section, before they could even begin zooming particles around. The debate over the collider has been raging for a while tho. A lot of the theories of what could go wrong are pretty out there.
-
...I read that as large hardon collider.
-
You're late. That's Tauntaun.

dicks colliding at near the speed of light!

its oldskool

btw you can change my name back to whatever you want now

"whatever you want now" is a cool name.

lol

Awesome.

You know, those pictures of the giant glowing machines that look like warp drives... those aren't the actual collider itself.
Those are machines that various teams from around the world are using for large-scale experiments.
The actual LHC is just a bunch of pipes going down a really long tube that loops around in a circle.
Read about it here! (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2924802&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1)

i never got laid :'(

I wonder what it feels like to be changed into strange matter ???
Or be broken down and sucked into a black hole ???
You say the real testing is a month off... I wish they'd put out a proper schedule so I know exactly when to be blind drunk.
-
I wonder what it feels like to be changed into strange matter ???
Or be broken down and sucked into a black hole ???
It's going to be totally sweet when we all find out in a month!
-
Isn't this the thing that the Dharma Initiative logos are based around?
-
If I don't get super powers when I wake up tomorrow morning, I will simply be disappointed in science.
-
i never got laid :'(
Thank god the world isn't actually ending.
-
i never got laid :'(
There is still time! Grab the first girl you see and get the job done!
-
My hand is closer. Oh well
-
tomorrow is not the day, theyre accelerating particles in one direction. Nothing dangerous about that.
-
there's nothing dangerous about any of it

On the other hand, people have been known to lose an eye in the Large Hardon Collider.
-
I think it was the MSNBC Cosmic Log that brought up the fact that the people who designed the A-Bomb weren't entirely sure the reaction wouldnt end. So there's always these kinds of unknowns. We gotta depend on GUTS.
-
but thats the case every time we leave the house

A few of those arguments resurfaced during the development of the H bomb. Talks about it possibly setting the atmosphere on fire, and such. Now that would have been one hell of a darn it.
-
I was telling Prole at least if the collider takes us out, god damn is it a hell of a way to go.
-
Would it be amazing, the moment the particles collide, we all turn into ducks. Science <3
-
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

that's pretty cool. Well hopefully they do get some good information out of this, hell maybe a new energy source from "dark matter" *shrug*

why can't we have our own LHC scientist here at EB? ???

why can't we have our own LHC scientist here at EB? ???
All we have here are THC scientists.
Oh, and a TVC Athiest Scientist.

That cart up there is the one that'll push the Xen crystal into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer.

overhyped, under-delivered.
thanks, science

Aren't we all supposed to be dead or something?

From the BBC comments:
I am 11 years old and people at school are telling me that the earth will blow up because of this. Will it???
Isobel, Sheffield
Scientists can do all the experiments they like (although I am not convinced that the cost might have gone further in helping the poor of our world), but when they or the media portray what they are doing as 'fact' or 'absolute truth' i.e. big bang=how our world began, where does that leave those millions and millions over the world who think otherwise e.g. creation by God. If we stand up and say creation is fact and absolute truth we are shouted down and usually told we are idiots. Bias rules.

i think it is terrible becuse they are killing every one!! i am only 8!!! and they are 45?
melissa mcparland, scotland
This Is So Stupid Because Could Of Killed Us All What A WASTE Of Money Could Of Been Used On Something A Lot Better!!!!
Amy, Bristol
i think this hole experiment shouldent of happened encase will all die cause my mates are saying it shouldent of happend your just killing the envoroment like that the scientist shouldent of dounet for there own safty .............
danielle, wolverhampton
i think its stupid and paffetic because all this stupid black hole bussness we could die because the holes wil get bigger n earth will get sucked upp so wts the point of us dieing for a stupid science expermentx
lyndsey, cumbria
It's amazing - the 'brightest' minds, humanly speaking, trying to recreate something which has been found to be totally false and has been disproved on many occasions and the fact that they are willing to spend billions of pounds disproving it again! Why not spend the money on providing long term Aid for a third world group of countries and just admit that maybe creation, that has nothing scientifically against it - on the contrary - all evidence agrees perfectly, and admit they were wrong!
Dan Leedham, Bradford, United Kingdom
in school a rumor has been said if it goes wrong everyone will get sucked into a big black whole
courtney, bridgwater
plz... don't start this oprationg , I think the big bang is more harmful for us . So I requesting u plz......................................... . stop ............................this opration
Ranjit Mohanty, Bhubaneswar
So, they decide to simulate the Big Bang at 09.30 GMT today underground and by 11.00 GMT there is a 6.1 strength earthquake in Iran. Coincidence or accident, I wonder?

"If this experiment can open doors to other dimensions for us, wouldn't it lets beings from other dimensions invade our one? If this is true shouldnt we wait untill we are equiped with more developed weapons before we experiment?

Don't worry, there are crowbars aplenty at CERN

I'm sure they have, it's just that you're taking the fun out of potential, imminent death.

I suppose youre right. Its either that or a McCain presidency

Oh lord Satan... Please allow the black hole to swallow us all... like Shannon Tweed.
-
I just hope at the end of all this, the string-theorists are proved wrong. I don't like the idea of parallel universes, where in one I potentially like bananas, and in another, I'm locked in TVC's basement, strapped to a medical examination table. *shudder*

Those Doomsday messages must have been scary as fuck. Its not like Shiva is gonna rip into this dimension or something.
I can't believe the global feeling of terror towards this isn't a joke.

Nothing is going to happen today,it is just beam testing.
-
from the cern dude on somethingawful:
There you have it, folks. The first beam was a complete and total success on all counts. Protons have been circulated at 450GeV (nominal) around both directions of the LHC.
Lyn Evans, head of the accelerator division looked like he was shitting gold bars earlier, and rightly so. This is the first time an accelerator has come online so quickly, without a single hitch. I thought it'd take a lot longer than it did to get to this stage, but it took less than 8 hours to get both beams circulating.
It looks like they didn't get cocky and attempt collisions, which is I guess a smart move- they ended on a roll instead of trying to push things. I'd say a lot of the teams involved will have been working around the clock to get here, and they deserve a rest.
In October, but possibly a little earlier than we expected, we will see first collisions. For now though, all the detectors are reporting that they have seen the beam, and been able to acquire data from it.
The LHCb saw tracks in the VELO, Outer Tracker, and even reconstructed rings in the RICH. This is the first data from the LHC beam!
What you see above is reconstructed tracks (protons, and decay products) passing through the LHCb detector, fresh from the beam this morning. This is fucking glorious. I'm off out for some beers with the rest of my group.
Thanks for showing so much interest guys and gals- I'll be back on to answer anything you have to ask tomorrow.
