Fuck yeah I am... but the question is - should I play 3 GBC first? Haven't played 3 since 1992.

Dragon Quest III and IV are completely unrelated so buy away.  I've had my copy pre-ordered for a few months now.  Can't fucking wait.

I'm definitely buying it, I own the NES versions but my question to myself was whether or not I wanted to go through 3 first before 4, since it's been such a while since I've played through 3. (or 4 for that matter)

Yeah I think DQ4 was when they decided to finally break the series off from the Erdrick/Loto world and became like Final Fantasy where each entry was a different world and story.

No, DQ4 starts a new trilogy entirely. DQ4-6 are connected.

DQ7 is the first one where it's a totally different world.

I was actually getting back into DW3 on the train today.

DW2-4 NES are all glitched out on PSP for some reason. They play fine on my PC.

Might be the files you're using. I was playing Dragon Warrior III a few weeks ago on the PSP and it played fine to me.

PM me your files ENL. I've had these for years and they work fine on pc, probably from edgeemu.

Himumu - this your first time playing DQ4?

yep. I could have played the nes version but i've been waiting for the remake instead for the longest.

Been waiting for dq6 remake as well.

I've played and beat 1, 2, 5, and 8. I'd like to continue 7. But it's the perfect game to put on my psp, and i'm 30 hours into it all. But I have no dex drive or any way to transfer my save file on my psx card to my psp...

Honestly, I think dq4 ds is probably the fastest dq. Maybe more fast than 7, not sure.

Just finished Ragnar's chapter last night... why the fuck does everyone talk like micks in this game?  :-\ I hope that this eventually lets up. S-E's localization team has been going pretty overboard with character accents lately, like with Beat and his ebonics in TWEWY.
Title: Re: DQ4!!
Post by: Himu on September 18, 2008, 10:09:42 AM
You think that's bad? Just wait till Alena's section.

I could do without the accents. They really get old, fast.

From all reports I'm seeing this game is a massive dud and bomb... DQ fails in the new world

Or maybe it's just this atrocious DS version

First FF4 now DQ4...

What is wrong DQ4
Title: Re: DQ4!!
Post by: demi on September 18, 2008, 01:01:00 PM
I was talkin to Rob about it, and hes a HUGE DQ fan, he even has that gay slime controller and has the GIANT DQ8 store display that held the guidebooks and shit. He was telling me how he just feels it's not as good, he doesn't have the urge to even bother continuing. He was saying how it's distinguished mentally-challenged easy, how the translation is shit, and the graphics  - while better than FF4 - are still pretty boring and yuck. If that's not what I wanted to hear, then find me a bigger fan of the Dragon Quest series. He even bought the Wii game and enjoyed that a LITTLE.
Title: Re: DQ4!!
Post by: Himu on September 18, 2008, 01:14:56 PM
the game is distinguished mentally-challenged easy? I had trouble with the arena in chapter 2.

But then again this is my first time playing it. :(

So the NES version is way better?

Aeana's a pretty damn big DQ fan, probably the biggest I've seen, and she prefers the remake. Hmmm.

Yeah, that's where I am. The whole translation is shite, there are lots of typos too, even with the accents. S-E localizations have really gone downhill lately.

What typos have you found?  The few words/lines I've found to be questionable I just chalked up to accents/dialect.

there was one tombstone that said,"She became extinct to protect her family" or something

and the russian shit in ch2 is full of  shit where they're missing a crucial word in a sentence.

Like,"I forgot to trash tonight." they would really mean,"I forgot to take out the trash tonight."

It's all a bunch of gibberish, but hey! It gives the game personality!!!  :-\ :-X
Title: Re: DQ4!!
Post by: Himu on September 21, 2008, 08:41:01 PM
Beat the main game.

Here's my stats. Don't laugh. This was my first time playing DQIV.

Time Taken Till Ending: 42:34
Battles: 913
Monsters Defeated:2084
Total Gold From Battles: 109264
Victories: 822
Times Wiped Out: 12
Times Fled: 66
Maximum Damage In One Hit: 293
Monsters Left Unfound: 38
Clear Level: lv 35

Title: Zenithian Zouave

As far how much I liked the game...easily my favorite ds game.

Here's my DQ run down so far:

DQ8 > DQ4 > DQ7 > DQ5 > DQ2 > DQ1

Haven't beaten DQ7 yet but I've beaten all of those. Haven't played III or VI yet. Waiting for VI remake and I should go through III GBC sometime.
Title: Re: DQ4!!

Only Level 35 to beat the game? Wow what a waste of money. Good thing I didnt buy this. If it is any indication on the quality of the next two games...
Title: Re: DQ4!!
Post by: Himu on September 21, 2008, 08:45:49 PM
Well, that's the main game.

There's also an extra chapter, where you go through a secret dungeon and fight the REAL final boss apparently.

I got so annoyed by the backtracking right around that point. If you don't go out of your way to talk to one specific person you can't progress, and they load up 3-4 specific people in a row.

BTW, these 2D(ish) DQs really take a shit on the 3D ones. 8 and Joker are mindnumblingly slow and boring, the old school GBC DQs as well as this one stomp the shit out of them.

DQVIII owns

 >:(

The battles are apparently only more slow in the NA version, which added battle animations.

Haven't played Joker yet despite owning it.

Even if the battles are more slow compared 1-7 I dont' see why the game is so much worse. I've played rpgs with slower battle systems.

And yeah. I love the ds, I love DQ. I'm fine with DQIX because I just LOVE DQ. But shit. DQIX on ds is just SUCH a downgrade after VIII.

I mean, just look at the barfight scene. DS can't do that with justice.

A damn shame too.

I just beat the blue lion dude on the South America continent.

Way too much grinding required. It didn't bother me because I was playing at work, but if I was at home I'd have been pissed having to spend an hour or so getting my team from level 15 to level 20.

That's why 8 is pretty great, it requires virtually zero grinding

Too slow though, I always get bored when I try to play it again.

DQ4 is without grinding for the most part, every boss is shit easy, then all of a sudden you hit this one guy and you're guaranteed to be 5 levels under what's required. I've been poking around and doing extra battles and I still had to grind for at least an hour to have a chance at him.
Title: Re: DQ4!!

I really am missing the grand scale of things that was in the NES version. A trip from a town to a cave was perilous in of itself. It took a long time everything just felt bigger. Perhaps it's just nostalgia but I remember travelling from town to town was itself dangerous. So far in chapter two I can go from the bazaar all the way to the castle without even bothering to save because I know I'm in no immediate danger.
Title: Re: DQ4!!
Post by: demi on September 24, 2008, 07:36:18 PM
I'm not saying it doesnt... just 8 didn't, for me. Except when you fight Jester the first time, so you can get Heal with that ladyboy, the fencer

If the progression:grinding ration is wack then yeah the game requires too much grinding. DW1 was definitely like that, but 2 so far isn't. I'm making good progress while gaining levels pretty steadily.

Yea. It's cool to reduce the encounter rate but don't ALSO shrink the map. Same goes for dungeons.

Where is the best place to level up in Chapter 6?

It's lame how this dungeon is full of pushover enemies that give you barely any experience, but you're clearly 5 levels short of the chicken/egg boss feggits.
