Title: Anyone else taking the October LSAT?
Post by: Don Flamenco on September 25, 2008, 10:24:32 AM: A week from this Saturday...I honestly can't wait, so I can stop fucking studying for it ::) If it weren't for the LSAT, I'd have the easiest semester ever so far.

so, who's taking it and what are you shooting for?

I'm going for high 150s or anywhere in the 160s. Just need to get into anywhere in Chicago.

Looking at how US attorney salaries are distributed, you really want to get into University of Chicago, or Northwestern University, or at least University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign.

Also, Evilbore has already established that the low 160s is failure.

What sucks I have already taken the LSAT once and did wonderfully on it...but that was back in 1996. Having to retake it now that all my brain cells are officially dead is making me worry a little bit.

:lol I know, i know. there are plenty of overachievers who I've talked to here at school who think I'm not ambitious enough and that I'd be wasting my time. The people who are shooting for high 160s and up are the most vocal, it seems. In reality, Depaul, Loyola, or John Marshall would be just fine for my needs...hell, even Valparaiso is fine. or Thomas Cooley, if it comes to that (god, it better not) :lol

While I was working at a firm last summer, I met plenty of attorneys who went to these non-ivy league (or completely shitty, by many people's standards) schools. They've been successful, though not at the top of the heap. It all comes down to your connections for afterwards. I won't be recruited by Microsoft, but I'll definitely be with people I know, making decent money.

That's not to say I haven't been busting my ass studying and taking practice tests.

In Canada, the median LSAT scores of the worst common law schools are only about five or seven points lower than the top schools. In the US, the median LSAT scores of the worst schools are about 25 points lower than the top schools.

And, yes, you can be successful by going to a shitty law school; it's just a lot harder.

They actually give a 50% scholarship for a 151 :lol but still, they're accredited...someone could go there, kick ass and finish in the top of their class, and make a nice career for themselves. Sounds like the competition is definitely tougher in Canada.

What kind of law are you going into Night man?

Anyway, I'm not planning to take the LSAT till June. I prefer to wait one application cycle between undergrad and law school for many reasons (most importantly, the June LSAT gives me a month of study uninterrupted by midterms or finals).

Would you consider getting a MBA as well? A MBA seems to be a nice supplement to a Law degree.

yeah, it's definitely a joke of a school right now, but I bet in 10 years (or less) it'll be more respectable. They offer some seriously competitive scholarships, like the one I mentioned earlier, so I'm sure they're landing some excellent students who just don't want to pay out the ass for school. John Marshall in Chicago was the same way. It still has ridiculously low requirements, but a good rep among judges and lawyers in the city. It was ranked like 3rd or 4th in a U.S. News in a category I can't remember right now...might have been legal writing. IIT-Kent was also like 3rd or 4th tier about 15 years ago, but now it's first tier.

Not to defend Cooley, what matters is how a school is when you're applying and not how good it might be when you're done, but a lot of people just lack perspective when it comes to law schools...of course, there are the few who can talk shit because they actually will land 173+ and have 3.8+ gpas ;) From my brief scans, it seemed like there were a lot of people on those law school forums who thought that anything but top 10 of tier 1 is shit. and if they're anything like some of my friends and other people I know at school who are taking the LSAT/applying to law school, they're trying to psyche people out and aren't really that confident/smart. It's really lame, but law school entrance is very competitive. I don't even talk with people about the LSAT other than "yeah, it's a pain in the ass" etc. :lol

The friend who dropped out of Med school to go to Law school, had incredible LSAT scores but were rejected from the top schools because they were worried about her commitment to Law.

Yale and Stanford admissions are really the only ones referred to as "black boxes" -- most students are distinguished in some way beyond their LSAT scores and GPAs. But with every other school it's all in the numbers that they submit to the U.S. News & World Report. LSAT & GPA are more reliable predictors of acceptance to Harvard than they are Yale or Stanford, despite HLS's #2 ranking -- to get into Yale or Stanford you need to be a fireman or an internationally ranked Minesweeper player or some shit like that.
