Well, I'd imagine it's quite a bit easier to direct the action within a rigid design than an open one. Crysis offers more variety and gameplay opportunities in a small patch of trees than COD4 offers throughout an entire level.

COD4's SP was a turbocharged, visceral experience.  Most of the unjustified hate came from fanboys who didn't want to admit that it's better than the exclusives on their platforms of choice.

It was also an incredibly limited, heavily scripted and predictable experience, rife with comically visible invisible walls to keep you from straying outside of their rigid design. It offers a good ride, but it's just one, limited ride.

Deus Ex, the MJ12 underground, the airstrip, damned near all of it due to the open approach nature and skill points for exploration.

Saying that Assault on the Ctrl+V is one of the best FPS levels is ridiculous.

PS: Crysis > CoD4 by a good country mile. If you're talking multiplayer then sure, but single-player Crysis is better designed by being less obviously designed. CoD4 made for a flashy movie experience, but it was so straight-forward.

If you die in Crysis, you know that there's a half-dozen different methods you can try. If you die in CoD4, you have to go through the exact same routine again, except you just have to aim quicker or throw a grenade before going through that door.

I loved the bridge. It felt almost like sequence breaking, or finding a secret, because of how small the girders were; like you weren't really supposed to be there but you were still easily navigating it.

I'd agree with DX, but its areas almost don't feel like FPS levels... which I guess is a good reason for calling them great.

The bridge level was going to be my pick. I loved that part.

It was the moment the game really clicked into place as my all time fave for a couple of reasons. It really reinforced the idea of being on a SEAMLESS journey, ala an RPG, but without the overworld map and the menus and whatever else. Also, the way the architecture, the physical structure of the world, figured into the gameplay into such an ingenuous way was. POW. I remember going under the bridge and feeling like I was breaking the game, but then watching it unfurl into a genuine engagement.

The level before Cortana in Halo 3 (either the 7th or 8th stage IIRC), truly epic... the Banshee fight, the 2 giant walkers, the stage had everything that made Halo what it is, all condensed to one level.

The stage when you finally make it back to City 17 in HL2 and shit hits the fan. Striders walking around everywhere, you commanding the squads to fight, the battle with the chopper on the roof.

All Ghillied Up in COD4, like about 80% of the singleplayer in COD4 was excellent.

I may be the only person in the world who actually liked the Library in H1. Which is ironic because I expected to hate it, since it had 2 of the things I hate the most about the Halo series - repetitive mazelike level designs and Flood. But after the initial start, where you have such shite weapons, you really get into a rhythm, using a shotgun/assault rifle combo, and things just flow so well.

Borys has like the worst taste in games, ever.

The crazy thing about COD4 is that All Ghillied Up probably is its best level because it features the least interaction, the fewest choices and very few open fights with enemies. It's incredibly tightly directed, which makes it the best of the game.

That level was pretty cool.  I also think the second level in Halo 1 was awesome (where you are on the grassy field).

I am drawing a blank for a lot of games, but one level that I still remember from a decent game is the Market Garden level from Medal of Honor Frontline for PS2.  I remember the music playing in the level and the first experience with the BAR was awesome.

And Crysis is better than CoD4.  The CoD4 single player campaign was crap until the epilogue.

Why can't people just enjoy both COD4 and Crysis?  Other than the first person view, they're such different games.  Comparing these two shooters is like comparing Gears of War to GTA.

Well, that's how the thread began. Blame Borys. Always blame Borys. I liked COD4 despite my grievances over its rigid nature, but a direct comparison between the two will obviously bring out the differences.

I'm comparing Crysis to CoD4 in the sense that Crysis is a good single player game and CoD4 isn't.  I thought the CoD4 online was incredible and much better than the Crysis multiplayer, so I did enjoy both for different reasons.

CoD4 was a bad single player game, or I could just say that it isn't an enjoyable game if that helps you cope with it.  The actual controls and shooting mechanics are great, but the scenarios you are put in are boring.  I hope CoD5 or that 007 game turn out good because they use the same controls and shooting, just change out the crappy aspects of CoD4 with some (hopefully) good ones.

Well, some aspects of CoD4 single player were good.  The epilogue was awesome.  CoD1 or 2 are still way better.

It's going to come down to what you prefer. It features less opportunity, less exploration, less of just about everything aside from remarkably angry and suicidal terrorists. What it has is good direction, and if one really likes a tightly directed game, then obviously COD4 will be shit hot. But it's very limited, and will always be exactly what IW designed it to be. I personally feel that, scripted or not scripted, they just went too safe with it, and it bugged me that they didn't even attempt to mask the walls of the world. It also irked me that just about every action was initiated by NPCs.

Pure gameplay: Probably Crow's Nest on Legendary (second Halo 3 level) and the Covenant (Assault on the Control Room inspired Halo 3 level).

Scripting: the ant lion cave in HL2 E2 and the hospital level (E1 or E2).

It's gotta be something from Halo 1.  The second level is called Halo, and it was the level that first made my jaw drop.  Jumping in and out the Warthog, non-linear, multiple ways to go at each encounter.

But ultimately Assault on the Control Room is my answer.  It's not repetitive.  It's back-tracking the level, with the Flood, in The Two Betrayals, that is repetitive.  And even then, a "bad" Halo level is still better than 95% of every other level in a FPS (except Cortana).

7th level in Halo 3 is called The Covenant.  That whole middle section of Halo 3 is amazing, but the gameplay just doesn't match Halo CE.

old skool:

level 29 in Doom 2.  it was the one where you started next to a huge pit, and there was a mountain on the other side you had to get to.  pretty much any other doom map with a ton of enemies works too, like E4M2 in Ultimate Doom

E1M2 in Duke Nukem.  i think duke's a bit overrated, but the early levels in the game were awesome because the were some of the first in FPSes that wee actually designed to look like something other than corridors.  on that note...

the last level of Dark Forces.  amazing game, and this was the most expansive an impressive level in the campagin.  the conveyor belt part sucked tho.

also special recognition for the much-overlooked Blood, which had lots of really great levels that i can't remember anymore because i haven't played the game in a decade.

man i wish i had a pc again... :(

hl2 bridge and ravenholm, but i really liked it when you first saw city 17.  great atmosphere.

the trailerpark level for nolf2 which culminated in a boss fight inside a destructing trailer caught up in a tornado

what?    Two different games.  If you're into sandbox play, Crysis is awesome.  If you want an adrenaline rush, go for CoD4.  I will play CoD4 eventually, but from what I understand, it's the same game as Cod1,2,3 but with a modern warfare skin.

Crysis has that too. If you want it too. And that's the critical difference between the two. COD4 can only offer exactly what IW designed it to offer. Crysis is an experience of your own design, with the groundwork laid by Crytek.

the hospital level in BiA: HH where you're searching for franky

all of a sudden you're by yourself and it's survival horror

plus the hospital floor plan seems to have been designed by mc escher

plus if you die, and you will die, because it tricks you by having the suppression icons over the nazis only popping up at the last possible second, you have to start from the very beginning, no checkpoints
