Two people couldn't recognize me when I put on contacts this week. lol

I've always had contacts but usually I only wear them in the gym.  My eyes get dry too quickly for me to wear contacts for long hours but I've no choice this week because my glasses broke.

I can't go to the bathroom at night without putting on my glasses :(

Technically, that's not true.

I've been ducking going in for an eye exam for the last two years, as my formerly 20/20 vision is most assuredly not anymore. I'm going to have to bite the bullet pretty soon.

I got new glasses earlier this year, but I'm pretty sure I fucked up the exam because I still have trouble making out the license plate of a car that is like directly in front of me.  Plus at night it seems like every car has high beams on.  I must have tried too hard in the exam or something.

I need a new pair of glasses that I can wear constantly.  I have one pair at home that I like, but they constantly fall off my face so I stick to using them at home.  When I go out I ahve another pair that get me through the day, but the amount of visibility I have with them isn't stellar and they don't sit that well on my face.

Once, I went to a strip club and the stripper took my glasses off and balanced them on her boobie (with the nose-bridge resting on her erect nipple). My friends all thought this was entirely hilarious and sexy, but I had to ask them, "What? What is she doing?"

:(

I haven't gotten new glasses in like 6-7 years.

Mostly because I do my best not to wear them outside of my house.

I like your new glasses. :)

I wore glasses or contacts from age 7 on, but I stopped wearing them the past couple of years. My vision was never too bad. Now my eye doctor said I don't need them at all, because the difference with correction is so slight that it's not worth it to buy them. Yay!

Before i had Lasik, I was at -9 in one eye and -10 in the other. I've only met one other person with worse eyesight that is an actual functioning member of society. People used to try on my glasses and instantly wince in pain and disorientation, eyes watering. I couldn't focus on anything more than 10cm or so away from my eyes. It was so bad, I had to wait for 5 yrs for contact lenses strong enough to correct my sight to be invented.

I often muse that in more primitive times, my enormous brain, penis etc etc would have been lost to man(woman)kind because I'd have been discarded at birth and left for wild animals. (or dinosaurs, in the Palin-verse).

My uncle had terrible eyesight like that. He had Lasik a few years ago and even though he can't really see to drive at night anymore, he says Lasik is the best thing he ever did for himself.

No soft contacts were strong enough for him, so he had to wear the old-school hard contacts. They're literally pieces of glass or whatever that you stick in your eyes. Can you imagine? EW!

I picked up these a few months ago to replace my bent-to-hell pair of 8 years.

Not a big fan of the arms, but they're pretty snazzy otherwise.

I had those for a while too. Uncomfortable as fuck at first but you get used to them. Hard to wear for extended periods though. :bow LASIK :bow2

I'd probably still be single if it weren't for contacts/LASIK. In fact, I'd probably have been run over by a bus 'cause I hated those damn glasses so much. They were so heavy (because the lenses were so thick) I had permanent red welts on the bridge of my nose.

The problem with Lasik is that the improvements aren't permanent.  Plus there's still a risk of the doctor messing up.  Wearing glasses is better than going blind.

I liked the odds. Who says the improvements aren't permanent? It works by trimming away some of the excess cornea. Does this magically grow back?

My professor in Ophthalmology and optometrist both mention that patients complain about their visions eventually getting worse. Corneas don't grow back because they're CNS tissues.  It's actually not a good thing because sometimes the surgeon can trim too much.

Also, according to Up to Date (site commonly used by physicians), 20 to 45 % patients require 2nd procedures although they generally fared pretty well with the follow up procedures.
Title: Re: I got new glasses, do you like them
Post by: Cormacaroni on October 01, 2008, 10:18:25 PM
In my case, the surgeon trimmed exactly the right amount...he got better results than we expected even. My surgery was about 6 years ago and my vision is still rockin'.

Everybody's vision eventually gets worse of course, something I'm sure they teach you in optalmology. Most of the complaints related to LASIK are just from patients who've gone into it with unrealistic expectations. My surgeon routinely turns away people with excellent vision but who want 20-20 vision so they can be pilots etc. Doctors in need of a paycheck will take those people on however, and that results in complaints.

Post by: Smooth Groove on October 01, 2008, 10:30:52 PM
Yes, everyone's eyesights do eventually degenerate which is why my prof doesn't like Lasik.  Why take a surgical risk when the changes aren't permanent?

The regression can't be avoided in most patients because of something called central corneal steepening.  It's basically a thickening of the corneas because of various conditions and is supposed to be the main cause of regression.  According to what I've read, there still haven't been enough studies on Lasik and it's still a developing science.  Of course, success depends on various factors such as the skill of the surgeons but personally I don't believe Lask is at a point where I'd recommend it to someone I cared about.
Title: Re: I got new glasses, do you like them
Post by: Cormacaroni on October 01, 2008, 10:39:00 PM
Well, you presumably read how bad my eyes were. My corneas are going to take a while to re-thicken, if they ever do. My doc said I could expect my vision to remain more-or-less as is 'til i hit late middle age. If/when it starts to deteriorate, I may have to correct it somewhat with contacts or glasses. But so long as it is within normal realms of short-sightedness, I'll be perfectly happy with the treatment. As I said, without contacts/glasses, I was completely helpless. Couldn't shave myself.

That said, LASIK approval ratings from patients are well above 90%, with most of the complaints coming from people with unrealistic expectations. Let's not shy away from every medical advance of the 20th/21st centuries because not enough time has passed for us to see every last long-term ramification. There haven't been enough studies on ANYTHING.

Well, I believe in not possibly doing more harm than good.  Keep in mind I'm strongly influenced by the aforementioned Opthal prof.  The guy is basically my idol.  He did Cardio, Neuro, and General surgery before he did eye surgery.  He's absolutely the most brilliant physician I've ever known.   If he doesn't generally recommend eye surgery to his patients, then I'd believe there's a good reason for it.

'First, do no harm' is all very well in theory. Find yourself with a serious impediment to your life and your opinion will change, I have no doubt.

I could see where you're coming from since I do sympathize with women that want breast implants or men that want hair implants.  It's just that I personally don't think wearing glasses is all that bad or unattractive.  But I guess you can't convince people to be happy if they're not.

I'll be honest, the boost in confidence from getting LASIK, having to never worry about glasses again (I also have a bit of OCD which means I was constantly cleaning them or worried about losing them), the gains in my appearance... was sooooooooo worth it for me.
