Title: Decent gaming labtop for $800 to $1000
Post by: Smooth Groove on September 30, 2008, 02:29:59 PM: Does such a labtop exist? The dad won't let me buy anything more expensive than that because he knows that I'll use it for gaming. He's been complaining that I've got too much gaming stuff in my apt.

I love my MacBook; it's worked out for me far better than the $3,200 "gaming class" Alienware laptop I got before it. The one thing it can't do (although like MAF's laptop it can run the older stuff) is games, but that's fine. I have plenty of games on my consoles. If I get back to PC gaming, I'd get a desktop. These gaming laptops get outdated WAY too quickly from my experience with one.

Price issues aside, I'd like to never recommend Alienware to anyone. The laptop I got was supposed to be upgradeable. Then they brought out a new model and quit producing the new graphics cards for the older one, less than a year after I got it. Fucktards.

I might sorta understand it if you have a game that you really REEAAALLY would want to play while not at home though but the battery length should be your main priority.

In my case I got a gaming laptop because I needed to have a laptop as my main computer. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have bothered. My current computer is a laptop for the same reason, but with these subnotebooks now, my next one will be a desktop.

The current labtop can't even handle COD 2 or Hl2 without stuttering. Only games like Warcraft 3 can play decently on it.

Maybe you just got a lemon? Also, it's kinda unrealistic to expect major upgrades for a notebook. I like the stuff that Alienware makes. Alienware products look nice and are high performing, unlike most pre-built PCs. Their desktops are water cooled and they are one of the few manufacturers that make SLI notebooks. I like building my own computers but I would definitely buy their stuff if I had the money.

Naw, this particular model was advertised to have an upgradeable graphics card. That was the main reason I got it; they didn't have the latest card in stock at the time (9700), only the 9600, but they told me I could get a 9700 at any time and that the 9800 was coming. When I was ready to upgrade, I couldn't.

I don't know how their stuff is now versus four+ years ago, I can only go by what I got from them (Area 51m). The laptop is built like a TANK and the casing can stand a lot of punishment, but there are several things that hinder it as a "laptop," especially one you might bring to school with you:

-It's heavy. The HUGE POWER BRICK is really what does it. You don't get a case for this thing, they give you a backpack.
-The battery life is shit. We're talking about 45 minutes here.
-When using the battery, you have to run the PC at low performance settings, so forget about any real gaming.
-It overheats. My biggest problem with it. I cleaned it often and kept it dust-free, but it didn't matter.

There were also major problems with the wi-fi; basically the built-in wi-fi was shit and I had to get an external card. There were a lot of issues with this particular model back then from what I remember, but I'm sure that's no problem now.

Now I got this PC as a desktop replacement. I needed a laptop but was okay with not bringing it everywhere; did a lot of moving around and just needed something that could be packed up and moved easily. It served me well, but as a gaming computer it got outdated fast and a lot of stuff ran a bit too choppy. I found that I did very little PC gaming and its faults that I listed above sucked, so when it came time to get a new computer, I went with a lighter, slimmer, smaller laptop that has been working great. I would like to play a few games here and there, but it's just not enough of an issue for it to matter. If I really want to play Diablo III for example, I'll get a desktop. I didn't even know about subnotebooks when I got my MacBook; if I did I would have gotten a desktop for sure. You can't beat those things for portability and battery performance.

Well, space might be an issue. Or you do a lot of traveling. Or you are stuck somewhere all day where a laptop is allowed and don't want to go insane. There's LAN stuff like you mentioned, and also some people just plain like to have laptops over desktops. It's just too bad that compared to a gaming class desktop you are essentially paying more for less.

At my in-laws, the lack of internet was far, far worse than not having any games to play. Now that I am (unfortunately) living with them, it's much better since I at least have ALL my gaming crap plus much internets to keep me occupied.

I just tell 'em to fuck off. I was bringing a gaming system to my relative's house when I was in high school. It "saved" thanksgiving for me when there was nothing to do...the adults sat downstairs bored while my brother and I played Capcom fighting games on the Saturn all day.

I don't bring it a lot but, for instance, a couple of weeks ago my wife and I went to my in-laws and I watched their dog while they went to the Ren Fair (I wasn't left out I just didn't want to go). So I brought my comp along and pwned noobs all day. Would have just been easier to have a laptop, a luxury if you will. :-*

Walking around all day in the blistering sun wearing black and having heffers shove their disgusting milk makers in my face? No, I've been there, done that. They had these knife throwers last year though that were really good and pretty funny but I was told by my sister in law that they weren't there this year so looks like I didn't miss much.
