Title: Maximo: Inevitable Mediocrity or Incompetent Botch?
Post by: Mandark on August 05, 2006, 11:13:30 PM
Was Maximo doomed to fail from the start, as a 3D action-platformer, or did it waste potential with unimaginative enemy placement and lily pad platforming?

It's not like the genre's overflowing with great, exciting games.

I got 99% on Maximo before I just got too bored.

It did really suck, but I was too blinded by fanboy circle jerks on the Internet to form my own opinion then.

I think I have picked this game up 100 times to purchase, but never pulled the trigger. Doesnt' seem like it is worth 10 bucks.

i got to this one part where you have to make what pretty much is an impossible jump off some sort of ledge on the final world, so i gave up and sold it off

Psychonauts was better, but not because the actual gameplay was better designed, or even really good.  It just had much more fun extraneous stuff.

What's the point of 3D platformers these days?  Dynasty Warrior style brawlers do better action and sandbox games have more to explore.  Nobody's really making 3D games with the objective of getting from Point A to Point B without falling into oblivion.

I think Jet Grind Radio had the right idea.  Reach different points in a level.  No particular order, but with a time limit and enemies chasing you, and certain points requiring specific jumps to reach.  Still, platformers were probably just a result of the limited technology (walking in a straight line isn't interesting, what if there are holes in the floor?), and if I think about it too much, I'll be an opa.

Daxter > Maximo

And Maximo was really good.

Interesting game that plays well and offers a fair challenge in spite of some clumsy design decisions, its sequel was fairly entertaining too.

now developpers just mess around figuring out what to do with their pre-conceived 3D characters in a 3D world, and it's getting overly complicated and frustrating because it comes down to getting stuck in bad camera angles and collecting stuff to artificially extend the duration of the game, and having trouble figuring out whatever the hell to do next -- a good 3D platformer IMO would be far more linear and offer simpler levels with engaging and easily recognizable challenges where one doesn't have to waste dozens of minutes getting lost while figuring out wherever to go next except for side quests or bonuses or something

and it's especially frustrating having to spend countless minutes moving and jumping to accomplish some hard specific task in these conditions, only to fail while trying to accomplish it, and then having to re-do the whole process over and over again, _especially_ when the game's badly designed somehow, that's why I'm getting sick of platformers -- Jet Set Radio Future was a good example of that

Psychonauts was better, but not because the actual gameplay was better designed, or even really good.  It just had much more fun extraneous stuff.

no it isn't, it's just a boring collect-a-thon with dull platforming that wants but fails to be an adventure game with lame weird characters and plot elements, and one of the most overrated games of the decade

nerds on forums just circle-jerk it because they feel sorry for the death of adventure gaming and for Tim Schafer's unsuccessful niche  game design ideals or something, they do this all the time

I enjoyed the sequel quite a bit.

Also, Psychonauts is overrated mediocrity.
