It's rare to see a game like this come out in this day and age. Ikkitousen Eloquent fist is a completely 2D traditional arcade-style-side-scrolling-beat-em-up game from Marvelous Entertainment.
If you are not familiar with Ikkitousen, it's a manga and anime series that features modern versions of ancient Chinese warriors (from Romance Of The Three Kingdoms). The twist is that it takes place in Japan and that most of the characters are all high school students- and half-naked females at that. So amidst the action, bouncing breasts, panty shots, and ripped shirts are present and ridiculously-overdone. The PSP game keeps the ecchi content, but provides enough substance for those looking for a decent old-school style beat-em-up.
Eloquent Fist has 17 playable characters with varying fighting styles. The game play is all combo-based; characters attack using different preset combo strings with the square and triangle buttons. Circle unleashes a powerful scattering attack that takes a small amount of your lifebar, X jumps, R acts as a run button, and L powers up your character. Once powered up, pressing L and square (and later L and triangle once unlocked) will unleash a super attack. You can keep the combo meter going by immediately attacking one enemy after downing another; the overall game play system plays something like a 2D version of Koei's various Musou games. Characters can be leveled up to 30 and alternate outfits (which are generally various types of swimsuits) can also be unlocked.
Ikkitousen features story modes for three groups of characters, an arcade mode (where all of the characters are playable), and a gallery mode where you can look at various illustrations and listen to voice samples. Several new playable characters not featured in the anime series are also introduced.
The game's graphics are a mixed bag. The game allows for a total of six characters on screen at one time (your own plus five enemies), and the sprites are all very large and detailed, with animation ranging from decent to very good. But the backgrounds are bland for the most part, and you generally do nothing but go from the left side of the screen to the right side. This is standard for a 2D beat-em-up, but the backgrounds still could have been made a bit more diverse than the typical school, park, street, etc. backgrounds used. There are a lot of voice samples, including spoken dialogue in the story mode.

If you can get past the perverted elements of Ikkitousen, you'll find a solid beat-em-up with plenty of characters to offer. Worth buying for fans, worth a try for beat-em-up enthusiasts.

this game is awful. it wasn't even worth the 20 minutes it took to torrent. what are you on? each character has like 5 frames of animation, they all play virtually the same and have no interesting fighting styles, and there's no tactics in the battles -- just charge up yer bar using the overpowered triangle attack, whack r, then hit r + square to knock the boss' clothes off. this is abysmally wretched. you dorks are desperate! DO NOT BETRAY MY EXPECTATIONS AGAIN.
coming off of orochi 2, this was like having a hentai clown defecate animu in my mouth.

*shrug* Sounds like a 2D beat-em-up to me! What I thought was funny is that you can rip up the clothes on the male character bosses too. Equal perversion for everyone. Also put the difficulty level up...it's ridiculously easy on normal. Hard is a bit better. And there are differences in how the characters play; they are varied. Did you try like two of them or something?

:rofl
BTW, the rip floating around on the torrent sites is missing audio for some reason.

WTF, Lyte Edge, you have been acting like a Hentai clown recently. Is it 'cause you're living with a Japanese family?
-
Some game play videos from the official site. ANIMUUUUUUUUU action.

Being surrounded by Japanese everyday is subconsciously turning you into a Japanese!

SOON I SHALL MAKE ANIMU MUSIC VIDEOS AND BUY TONS OF POCKY
I think despite enjoying anime and manga, what stopped me from becoming an otaku-freak was meeting other people who were into this stuff. The first (and last!) anime con I ever went to back in 1999, plus all the distinguished mentally-challenged fellows I dealt with at my old game store job made sure of that! So while I may delve into the realm of the animu, I shall never become a dreaded weeaboo-wapanese. :japancry
Soon I'm going back to the States. I need to remember to conceal all love I have for my hobbies once again.

Sounds like my take on the whole animu thing. I enjoy my Gundams, but none of my friends are into anime, nor would you have any idea I'm into it if you met me in real life.

i looks like those horrible sailor moon beat em ups

See, I'm not embarrassed about my hobbies or anything. I like manga. I buy tons of games. I even buy game figures and the occasional animu merchandise. It's my hobby and imma nerd out big time on it.
The problem is that 90% of all the other people I have encountered that like this stuff are disgusting, have sickeningly-bad hygiene, are distinguished mentally-challenged fellows, are annoying as shit, can't talk about anything OTHER than some game, animu, or even worse some trading card game, or any combination of these or all of them. Just typing this now is bringing back horrible memories, such as the 30-something Yu-Gi-Oh card game fan who was in my store for FOUR FUCKING HOURS looking through cards and stank up the toilet. The saturdays spent working in a store filled with screaming kids playing these dumb card games (and the creepy 30-something dudes that also came in to play with them). The "otaku" trying to engage me in conversation over episode #0954545045455 of Naruto or whatever. The dorks rambling on about games for an hour. THE HORROR OH SHIT THE HORROR.

the arcade sailor moon beu i played was light years better than this. this game isn't even doujin-grade quality. you literally move left to right, mashing triangle and watching generic enemies that don't have any sort of real moves fly around and die, and then you fight a boss who barely puts up a fight until you press r+[] and knock his/her clothes off. it's so perfunctory as to be insulting. on top of that, the character art and design is really awful. ANIMU NERDS QUIT HYPING CRAP. this is a 2/10 game.
final fight plays brilliant next to this. i played sengoku 3 right after it and it was a revelation.

Who did you use and what difficulty and mode did you play?
But then it probably doesn't really matter since I think the license this is based on would be an immediate turn off to you. :lol

Oh, there is no question that it isn't in the same league as Capcom and SNK's finest. I played Sengoku 3 right after this too, as a matter of fact! But this kind of game is so damn rare nowadays so it is nice to see something new come along. I think it's decent and I'll take decent in this day and age.

I love how you know terms like this while mocking Japafags. :lol
-
i've been posting to videogame forums and newsgroups since 1991. of course i'd know terms like that, pervert!
-
Oh, the Gundam models are out on display in the den, but that's the only place they have in our house.

I started up an anime club in college, and we ended up going to Sakura Con once, but the people there scared me away from the fandom side of things.

the only reason to go to cons was to get bootlegs of videos you couldn't find locally
then the internet happened

My first year at State, there was a really cool Japanese club. Only a few members, cool dudes n' gals who weren't geeks. They didn't do much though and almost all of them graduated shortly after. A year later the club re-started up; I went once to get some Japanese practice but instead found animu crossword puzzles and geeks. There was this one girl who had the DUMBEST fucking haircut I have ever seen, it was a bowl cut with really long bangs over her ears. She ended up working at the radio station and played animu and J-Pop music, ugh.

:lol This was the only reason I went too. I went to Dragoncon for a few years (even worked there twice when my store had a booth there) and Anime Weekend Atlanta once. All I ever did was buy stuff, so I would only be there for an hour or two then go home. The stench of this fat-ass in a Goku costume at AWA still haunts me to this day.
-
i think my funniest creepy moment was the late 30s dude who loved all things sailor moon
i was at a booth looking and the dude would not shut up or go away for like 30 minutes talking about how the american version was horrible but he still had all the episodes, etc etc
at least watch cutey honey or something.
-
Creepiest non-con non-work moment was my first time in Akihabara. Went to a shop that was in a basement, found it filled with nothing but loli-doujin porn. Equally creepy was that the shop was PACKED full of people. My friend and I just looked at each other and got the hell out of there.
It was then I learned not to go to the basement level of shops in Akihabara. I want to say Softmap and a big Taito arcade both have hentai-porn shops in their basements.

But at least you could jerk off to sailor moon without feeling like a pervert.

I had a stupid gaijin moment while looking around the top floor of the Akihabara Trader across from the KFC. I tripped right over a box of clearance hentai doujin. Everyone just stopped what they were doing and stared at me, but being Japanese, they didn't really acknowledge it with any sort of response.

sounds like a big ol PASS to me. Why arent you people playing good games? HAW
-
S'fun I like to beat generic animu thugs up! It did make me go back to Sengoku 3 and Double Dragon Advance though. Also while on the subject I never did get very far in Advance Guardian Heroes.
EDIT: It's 5:45am now and I am wide awake. WTF?! :o

Lyte and I are to 2D beat-em-ups as Himuro is to rail shooters.

I read that as "Advance Guardian Herpes"
I suggest that is the new name of this game

Hey Lyte, have you heard anything about this?

A Sengoku anthology is being released for the PC and PS2 in Europe by DHM.

Because they'll stop making them if we don't?
Fucking pirates.

Looks like a doujin game.
What's with "the" lyte edge?
-
aside from the janky animation, the gameplay videos look kind of decent. i'll download it and maybe throw it in with my tf6 order if it doesn't suck
can't be much worse than castle crashers

I have not, I don't think it's even been announced for J-Land yet. Interesting.

You ever watch Tenjo Tenge? Basically this show falls into the "martial arts action but with half-naked chicks yet no one really cares and keeps on fighting subgenre." I tried reading the comics but couldn't get what the fuck was going on.

Oh wow, wtf dude

What's with all the complaints? It's not like you have to pay for the game. :japancry
Just enjoy the free games while they're still making them.

No, that would be if I started playing PC games *b-dump tsst!*

Oh man Borys... you are sinking to a new low :'(

Thank god for Prole's straight-talk on this one. I'm so starved for fresh beat-em-ups I was ready to buy this after the first post.
I recommend you at least TRY it.

so we can't agree on the art, the gameplay, or pretty much anything about this, but hey, I'm pretty sure we're all very cool with beat-em-ups, a very fine genre that has fallen out of fashion lately.
Why not play it safe and go back into the last-gen backlog and pick up at least one of the worthwhile BEU's you must have missed. Go ahead, there were scads of them.
God Hand
Shadow of Rome
Urban Reign
Yakuza 1 and 2
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
God of War 1 and 2
Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2
any one of the infinity of Koei's Warriors series
and those are just the ones I've played and liked. I still never tried out The Warriors, Bully, Odin Sphere (that counts, right?) or some of the more esoteric ones out there, like the one Lyte Edge just started a thread about. Brothers, lets not tear each other down, lets build each other up. That's change you can believe in.

Is sengoku that PSP dungeon crawler? oh wait :(
I think you and I were the only two people to dig it.
-
No, no...SNK's Sengoku series. I never cared much for the first two, but 3 was made by a different team and fucking ROCKS. I think game-play wise it is the best 2D side-scrolling BEU up there. It has awesome music too. Really what kind of brings it down is the bland set of enemies; there's not much variety in them and you basically fight the same 2-3 guys the entire game, but it is challenging and you can do some cool combos/juggles.
The best 3D BEU is Godhand!
-
Totally agree about God Hand.
-
Holy shit: RYTOU EDGOU is to Animu shit Recommendations as Tre is to Shitty MMO Recommendations.
Kazuma Kiryu > anybody in God Hand
-
Holy shit: RYTOU EDGOU is to Animu shit Recommendations as Tre is to Shitty MMO Recommendations.
Kazuma Kiryu > anybody in God Hand
Is that the Yakuza guy? Man, you have got to be fucking JOKING. ::)
-
That slow turning fucker from God Hand would be unfit to shine Kazuma's shoes.
-
SILENCE YOUR MOUTH
Gene would rip Kazuma's leg through his ass from his mouth.
-
Not with the turning as though he were a goddamned Sherman tank he won't.
-
Yuck, T234, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THIS THREAD. Yakuza isn't even a real "beat-em-up" per se.
That "tank" would run right the hell over that little gangster anyway.
-
Even if Gene did move like a Sherman tank (which he doesn't) he would have enough time to kick Kazuma's face off before he loaded into the fight.
-
2D beat-em-ups are not the same as 3D beat-em-ups.
-
Glad I downloaded it and tried it out. There's less depth than Final Fight 1 :lol
The sad thing about these kinds of games, besides that YOUR SAVE ICON IS A SET OF SCHOOLGIRL TITS, they could add a few more moves, a block or parry button, weapons, some nicer background interaction, etc. and it would make the game worth a purchase at $20 or so. Just a few small touches. Instead it's $50 and sells on the moe factor alone. I assume that the game cost $5 to develop and will generate loads of profit off of the few thousands copies they'll sell in Japan.
-
Welcome to Japan
