Title: PREZFIGHT II: This Time, It's Personal (Second Debate Thread)
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on October 07, 2008, 05:14:48 PM
The first debate got spun out into its own thread while the VP debate was shittily live-fisked in the main presidential thread.

Let us learn from our mistakes and comment on the second debate in this awesome separate thread thing

Quote
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain spent the last few days exchanging fighting words — notably "Ayers," "Keating" and "liar."

But while both sides arrived in here in a brawling mood — with McCain, in particular, under growing pressure to bloody Obama — aides and advisers to both candidates say that tonight's town-hall-style debate is no place to throw a punch.

Too bad the audience-participatory debate wasn't at Hofstra Univ - Hempstead is definitely a pro-Obama area  :P

Although I was kinda "meh" on the first debate, i.e. I didn't think Obama shined as bright as I was expecting him to, I will be watching this... mainly in hopes that McCain completely breaks down and flips out.

This debate will make or break McCain, count on it.

This is his supposed strength, the town hall format.  I think he is full of shit and if anyone asks him a bad question, I expect him to revert back to Angry John and say something stupid.  Seeing as how he has more than lost his temper the past few days, I will not put it past him to say something extremely dumb.

If the debate is in Obamaland, like tiesto said, that will give a populist impression that the people are for Obama.  That is the point of the town hall debates.  So I expect Obama to walk away with this one.

If in the rare chance McCain wins, I think he will become viable again.  The GOP is desperately hoping for a miracle and if McCain gets it in the form of a victory, I expect the momentum for Obama to stop dead and become more competitive.

If McCain loses, which is the likely chance, I don't expect much support for him anymore.  Losing 2 out of 3 debates, 3 if you count the VP, the momentum will be so much against McCain that I expect the focus of the RNC will begin to move more towards making sure Senators like Liddy Dole and Norm Coleman remain in office or in short, making sure they can maintain their GOP base as best as they can.

I don't think McCain will lose. I think this is going to the wildcard that wins him this debate.

What time does this start? I'm not missing house to watch it. fuck that.

Same here.  I got a meeting and The Shield is too awesome to simply just ignore.

I'll just let the 'Bore give me the highlights.

Arvie, are you insane?  The Yucca Mountain depository has been fought over for years because a laundry list of concerns.  We do not have a plan for SAFELY DISPOSING nuclear material.  It doesn't exist.  We have kind of, possible a good plan to dispose of it.  That's it.

Most reasons like I said make no sense and come as a result of fear from not understanding radiation.  Right now the waste is sitting in containers right by the plants which is so much better.

Gonna definitely give the nod to Obama... especially with regards to the economy and healthcare, he presented his positions in a clear and articulate manner, while McCain just spouted out FUD that was handily refuted by Obama. These issues are the main ones important to the middle class and the undecideds. Got a bit bored and drifted in and out during the foreign policy/Middle East portion of the debate.

McCain needed to knock this one out of the park, after a weak showing in the first debate, and a Biden victory in the VP debate... which he did not do. This debate won't hurt McCain but it will slightly reinforce Obama's standing in the polls.

Can't wait till next week, I live about 40 minutes from Hofstra, too bad tickets for the debate seemed to be student-only.

I think McCain is fucked.  The word coming in from all over except for Faux News is that Obama won this one.  These were supposedly both of McCain's strong points.  Now all he has left the weak domestic policy debate.  Unless that is supposedly McCain's strong point too.

Maybe Obama will gain 2-3 points in the polls but with already being 6-8 points ahead, it is probably too big of a gap for McCain to really close.
Title: Re: PREZFIGHT II: This Time, It's Personal (Second Debate Thread)

Snap poll results are in:

CBS
Obama 39%
McCain 27%

CNN
Obama 54%
McCain 30%

Even the pundits scorecards on CNN had it overwhelmingly for Obama.

Now.  The big thing that everyone is going to take away from and remember from this debate is the "that one" moment.  It's creepy and weird at best, borderline racist at worst.  People will take it poorly and this is pretty much it for McCain.  GAME OVER, MAN.

Horribly set up debate. I thought McCain's performance was better than his previous one but he still came off shrill, out of touch, and weak. Obama looked like a president debating a challenger. I don't think there was any big moment in the debate, and that's what hurts McCain: he needed Obama to fuck up, and Obama didn't fumble.

I thought Obama swept the first debate. This time he merely stiff armed every McCain advance. He was the stronger presence in the room, he gave the clearest answers, he had the best attacks, etc. But I don't think this was some type of decapitating win for Obama

Yep, not even King could bring himself to score McCain higher than Obama.

I still think it should have been the moderator's job to correct McCain when he said that thing about Obama wanting to attack Pakistan for the second time, right after the first correction.

That, and he was confusing things that Obama just said. Is he deaf?

Let's leave the man's advanced age out of this.

You should take the middle emblem and stretch it out on the top of the big blue circle so that it looks like a fingernail.  Then it will look like a giant pointing finger.

"I don't think it was a racial thing at all, I thought "that one" was just McCain acting like an old man"

And I'll agree. The media playing jump to conclusions on this isn't helping anyone

The "media" is not insinuating it was a racial comment. I was watching CNN, it was Begala who said the comment was dumb because it could even been infered to have an undercurrent of racism.

Nobody called it racist.

McCain came off as condescending and old.

Yeah, most of the smart pundits are careful about using the word 'SEEMED' over 'WAS'

The "that one" comment reeked of comtempt-how dare this whipper-snapper steal my presidency!-rather than anything else. It still speaks leagues to his character, but in a different way than if it was clearly race related.

Given that the Embarracuda is likely to keep her attacks-she's not the kind of person to learn new tricks in the middle of the week without significant coaching-it'll be interesting to see if McCain jumps in directly with the Reverend Rezko Ayers Manchuribama as well, given that they are going to be campaigning together again starting tomorrow. If he does, look for the entire weight of the media and punditry to unload on McCain like a fucking hammer. The real pre-debate story today was the comments from the crowds in the speeches on Monday, where the crowd was clearly stoked into a frenzy of the very worst sort.

I think a lot of people forget that the point of these debates ISNT TO SEE WHO DEBATES BETTER. McCain offers no specifics, which makes the debate utterly useless when it comes to getting to know his position-- aside from being a fear monger.
Came here to post this. McSame had no specifics and thinks we should all just trust him to "change things in Washington." I also can't believe that he can defend his health care plan with a straight face.

:bow Obama :bow2

It didn't have anything to do with race but it had everything to do with condescending attitude of the Junior Senator from Illinois who dares challenge an experienced but maverick Senior Senator of Arizona.  People bringing up race are missing the point.  Obama can't really comment on his disrespect due to this because it is now tied to race and his attacks on McCain's disrespect will now be tied to using the race card, which is an instant loss.

Remember when Obama was the one being hammered by pundrity/voters about his lack of specifics? Seems like the voters are now saying that about McCain but the media hasn't caught on

The "no substance" criticism was never really valid.  Obama chose not to make his stump speech into a laundry list of his proposed programs, but he was plenty detailed and informed in interviews, Q&A sessions, his website, and policy-specific speeches (like the one he gave in March on financial regulation).

It was always about optics.  Because he's a relatively new figure to the national press, charismatic, and beloved by young people they pegged him as a talker rather than a doer, as if the two are somehow negatively correlated.  McCain gets a pass because he's old and has been in Washington for so long.

How many of the people criticizing Obama actually spend a lot of time discussing policy themselves?

Yes, in the grand Republican tradition of Nixon's secret plan to win Vietnam and McCarthy's secret list of communists, there's no way McCain's secret plan to capture bin Laden can fail.

even then at this point I really doubt that Americans would abscribe a captured Bin Laden to Republican ingenuity and tactics

Yeah. It's sort of how the Bush Administration announced that they were pulling out of Iraq. It really didn't do too much for McCain at all.

SOMETHING big has to happen just for McCain to tie things up. Perhaps the only good think that's happened for him in the last 3 weeks was the VP debate. Palin lost but at least she didn't fall on her face. Everything else has been downhill

I'm never going to predict an Obama win but it's not looking good for McCain right now. At all
