and to answer your question, my old boss expected us to go home and get our badges if we forgot them (i lived 45 minutes from work), and she told us not to come into or leave work in our regular clothes knowing full well that many of us were students coming from or going to school.

When I worked at a grocery store, Sunday premiums ($1/hr more) were eliminated.  The claim was that theft was too rampant when a month before, the manager congratulated everyone for keeping losses down.  To couple that, the next week, he went on a trip to Africa for a month to hunt animals.  The result of this was that theft actually started to happen.  Employees would "accidentally" bust open a six pack of beer, bring it to the back (no security cameras) and poured it into cups of pop.  Personally, I had Lobster Bisque every Sunday for a month.

Fortunately, they don't want me to walk around in my labcoat after I clock out because there would be absolute chaos.

The badge thing sucks.

And I will.

also last january they decided we wouldn't be getting annual raises anymore - instead we'd potentially get three raises a year depending on performance.  later we found out that the raises were based on our entire department's performance, and we had to reach goals that were literally impossible because we just didn't have enough clients.  but instead of listening to us and adjusting out goals, my boss told us we were all lazy and shaved fifteen minutes off of our lunch.  when i left there i hadn't gotten a raise in over a year and half (and actually my last raise was SIX FUCKING CENTS despite getting a favorable evaluation).  FUCK THAT PLACE

I'd be like "sorry maam [because it's going to be a middle aged/old woman, of course] but I need to turn the machine off at 9pm. You're welcome to come back tomorrow when you have more time to accomplish what you need in the time alotted."

Most places I've worked required badges and if we forgot them, they could require us to go home to get them. Because of this many people left them at the workplace, hah.

Do you work in a public place? If you come in before your shift dressed in street clothes, and leave after your shift dressed in street clothes, they can't really say anything to you about it. You're a customer until you're clocked in with your work uniform on. ;)

My previous job had a similar rule.  Basically, I think they want you to help customers off the clock.  Whenever I was dumb enough to wear my work clothes before clocking in, I always had to help a couple of customers before clocking in.  Fuck that.  I went to clock in in my regular clothes.  Managers didn't like it but they wound up putting up with it.  Assholes.
