Blizzard today announced that StarCraft II will be released as a trilogy of separate games, each concentrating on one of the universe's three factions.
The first game in the trilogy will consist of the Terran campaign, and is set to be titled "Terrans: Wings of Liberty."
The second Zerg-focused title will be "Zerg: Heart of the Swarm," with the third game being "Protoss: Legacy of the Void."
"[The second and third games] will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products," said Blizzard's Rob Pardo.
Each campaign will be very different, with Pardo announcing the Zerg campaign will contain RPG elements. The Protoss campaigin will likewise be differentiated by elements of diplomacy. In addition, the Terran campaign will feature a Protoss mini-campaign.
The campaigns are planned as concentrated, epic storylines, with enough content to justify a full release. As a result, the games will now feature more in-game cinematics and story content.
Blizzard added that the plans for the multiplayer component are unchanged by the splitting of the campaigns. However, some units will now be unique to the campaigns and will not be playable in multiplayer.
Pardo noted that the decision was necessary to maintain the quality of the product, the alternatives either being a long delay of the game, or a scaling back of the campaigns.
More details may become available during BlizzCon, which continues through this weekend.
:rofl This is shameless milking.
-
that about wraps it up for starcraft
-
Blizzard shitting all over PC gamers
-
So what? HL2 is split across 4 games and each one still pwns.
-
Hopefully Diablo 3 turns out good because Blizzard is just increasing the streak if shitty games they make.
-
So what? HL2 is split across 4 games and each one still pwns.
I guess we'll just have to see what the prices are.
-
I don't even like Starcraft. lol
But I'm obligated to defend PC gaming, especially since Borys has become a facade of his former self.
-
So what? HL2 is split across 4 games and each one still pwns.
cough episode one
-
EP1 was kinda disappointing by Valve's high stands but EP2 more than makes up for it.
-
I still need to play through ep 1 and 2.
-
both episode 1 and 2 are great. episode 2 has my favorite shoot out in any of the half life games in it.
-
I thought there were only 2 half life games?
-
*SOMEONE* PLEASE EXPLAIN THE MEANING OF THIS
-
So are these all coming out at the same time, or like once every 4 months? Blizzard is going to have like 7-8 fucking skus for this. 2 skus for each installment (regular and collectors) and 2 Battle Chest skus (regs and collectors).
-
I'm kind of puzzled as to why RTS games would take so long to make content for. Surely the unit design and game balancing are 90% of the battle with an RTS, not cranking out the levels. They have to have that sorted out before they release the 1st game, right? And presumably all 3 races are still going to appear in the 1st game...very odd.
-
according to the article it doesnt seem that bad. each installment will be like a full game. waiting to see until they deliver. until then, consider me engaged and looking foraward to ti
-
If they're going to charge $50 per campaign set they can go to hell.
-
RA3 at the end of this month, fuck sc2
-
RA3 at the end of this month, fuck sc2
RA3 + DOW2 = multiple wargasms
-
there are koreans who will work for an entire year just to be able to afford all these games
-
I still think SC2 will be fine..Blizzard pwns.
Hey MAF we should co op some RA3.
-
yeah thats a possibility
-
If it's under $15 for each "expansion", then I'm OKAY with it. It's not that bad if the Terran version comes with a all races for MP and has a decent length plus a high quality campaign. They better have the expansions ready within like a week after launch though. I could see them losing some PC goty awards if they made everybody wait a decade for a third of the game.
EP1 was kinda disappointing by Valve's high stands but EP2 more than makes up for it.
the single bullet gimmick achievement was actually pretty fun to attempt but I didn't feel like replaying it at all after that.
-
Im not really okay with it. They have millions of our dollars from WoW, jesus fuck bleed a little for US
-
I'm only all right with it if all the campaigns put together would be insanely long (like 50 hours) and that each campaign has a worthwhile ending. If it looks like they had the story and campaigns planned to be like this, and if they don't charge up the ass for it, then I'm all right with it. Otherwise, I'll probably do the sensible thing and just wait a year for the inevitable battlechest with everything in it.
-

I agree. This is pretty ridiculous. WoW has an iron grip on MMOs. It's not like the revenue is going to be slowing any time soon. It's like the higher ups said something like "new games are not necessary unless they bring us WoW-esque amounts of dollars."
The only way I see this "trilogy" as being fair is if the games are launched several months apart and that they do not cost as much as fully priced games. Since Blizzum has already started charging premium prices for shit, I doubt this will be the case. A shame since the Starcraft 2 games seem like blatant retreads.
-
They realize they can milk stupid fucks some more why not. This has nothing to do with balancing or leveling. Just plain greed imo.
-
I think I'll wait for the inevitable SC2 trilogy battle chest.
-
The bitching is hilarious.
Each campaign is going to have 30+ missions.
Each individal title will have more replay title than every other game released so it isn't a big deal.
Enjoy paying 60 dollars for 8 hour games non replayable games like Mirrors Edge or Tomb Raider 40000.
Hell, even the console fanboys weapon of choice this holiday season (Gears 2, Resistance 2) will have under 1/10 the replayability each episode of SC2 will contain.
Go play another CoD game.
-
Sorry when youre sitting on as much money as Blizzard is, dont treat your customers like morons, especially with the economy the way it is.
Not only is the game glorified rehash, but they split it into three ways to fuck our wallets.
-
bend over blizzard whores, here comes the sweet luvin you want so bad.
-
When is the last time Blizzard short changed consumers with content in a game?
Keep looking.
As someone who also buys a ton of musou games, I'm surprised you are crying about this. Especially since Blizzard has a nearly impeccable track record.
-
MAF, you already get the lovin paying for WoW every month.
-
Not only is the game glorified rehash, but they split it into three ways to fuck our wallets.
:lol This coming from someone who is forking over $80 for a collector's edition release of The Matrix?
-
Blizzard WTF you used to be beautiful.
This doesn't make any sense - well outside of the obvious financial advantage this gives Blizzard, at the expense of the working man.
RA3: Obama
SC2: McCain?
:'(
We asked about the timeline for the three StarCraft II games, using Valve's original prediction of shipping all three episodes of the Half-Life 2 episodes within a single year, but reality is that it will take more than more like three years. Pardo thought that was a great example and said, "It's a little bit similar to that in that it would be great if we could have them follow one year from one another; I think that's going to be our target, but certainly that's not a promise in any way. But I think that's going to be around the realm that we're going to be hoping for."
WAT
-
you could always pay free-fifty for it and call it righteous retribution
-
I think I'll wait for the inevitable SC2 trilogy battle chest.
This.
-
One of the best things about all three campaigns being playable was that it allowed you to learn how to play each faction before jumping into multiplayer madness. Sure you could also do this by playing against the computer but campaigns are set up to introduce you to the new races. I'm primarily a Zerg player who can also dabble with Terran, but I had a fuckin hard time playing Protoss. Playing the campaign helped me further understand that race although I'm still not good with 'em lol
This is shit. In the end they expect people to spend $150 on the same game.
-

How do you know this? If the HL2 example is being thrown around, the expansions might go for $20 each.
-
The HL2 example was thrown around by posters, dummy. Not Blizzard.
When has Blizzard even charged $19.99 for expansions, Cajole? C'mon!
-
:(
-
Blizz whores rival Mac freaks and Nintendorks as some of the most loyal sheeplike consumers.

Exactly.
At the least it'll be $40, which is what they charge for WoW expansions for instance. I'm betting on $50
This entire thing reeks of Activision intervention. Since when has Blizzard ever been concerned about a game not being released on schedule?
-
Brood War wasn't $40. :(
-
:kylielaff :kylielaff :kylielaff
:kylielaff :borys :kylielaff
:kylielaff :kylielaff :kylielaff
-
These aren't even true expansions though - Blizzard is treating them like full blown games. So each game tells part of the story rather than a full game telling the entire story with expansions to follow up cliffhangers.
-
:(

Not even close, but I can see what you're saying.
You guys act like a bunch of crybabies, when was the last time Blizzard didn't deliver? Have some faith dipshits.

I'm sure all three games will be awesome. That doesn't mean I'm happy with this decision. I'd rather just wait until 2010
-

You can still wait until then (actually, I bet all three won't come out until like 2011/12.) Get the inevitable Starcraft II battle chest.
-
Yea but since I'm talking out of my angry ass right now I'll no doubt be the first motherfucker in line for the Terran game :-\
can't wait to put my awesome new computer to work on this game, and Diablo 3
-
Man, the Starcraft Battle Chest was pretty much the awesomest thing ever. I was with my mom at Price Club (what is now Costco) and I saw this cool sci-fi RTS double-pack game for $40 and I was like HEY MOM CAN I HAVE THIS PLEASEEEEEEEE and then it proceeded to rock my face off. :rock
-
yup I remember always looking at the StarCraft and WarCraft battlechests and thinking holy shit that looks awesome. My mom wouldn't let me buy either for a long ass time, so I wound up cutting grass during the summer to purchase the WarCraft chest, then I got the StarCraft one. :bow
I never got into Diablo though. I remember everyone on my suburban block going from nerdy-kids-who-played-Pokemon-nonstop to nerdy-kids-who-played-StarCraft/Warcraft-nonstop. Then one summer I noticed my friends didn't want to play either with me anymore because they were playing Diablo. I remember thinking it looked meh so I played StarCraft alone, hoping that one day my 56k AOL connection wouldn't be interrupted while I tried to play online :usacry
-
Eh, if they're each a year apart, it's not that big of an issue, I guess.
I hope they don't pull this stuff with Diablo III though. I guess that they have to find a way to justify developing games that aren't giant, constant cash machines like WoW, so I'd guess there's going to be something at least a wee bit milky with Diablo 3.
-

Most of my friends are Blizz whores who refuse to play WoW, like me. A few of us had Diablo, just about everyone had Starcraft and Diablo 2, and most of us got WC3 as well. SC and WC3 were the ones we played online together the most though.
-
back then we didn't have broadband so I'd have to sneak the computer out the house to do LAN parties at my friend's house.
One of my buddies got into the WCIII beta which was sooo awesome. I still like WCIII although some of the more rpg-esque elements don't really translate well in multiplayer, at least for me. I still prefer WCII
Today most of my buddies have moved to console gaming but they'll definitely nerd out over SCII. They don't like WoW haha. In fact all the people I've met who play WoW are stereotypical nerds. I made the mistake of mentioning I play WoW in class one day, which sparked an embarrassing discussion on night elves :lol
-
Come play Warhammer with us, fegs.
-
2004
World of Warcraft didn't deliver? ::)
Nope.
I should probably point out that I think MMORPG games are almost all terrible, so for me WoW is on the level of Justice League Task Force.
-
It's worse if it's a year apart. It's not like Brood Wars where there's a new campaign and just a couple new units, they're keeping away entire RACES. I've never seen anything like that in any game. By the time the expansion comes out, everybody will have blue balls over not being able to play as the zergs and protoss and probably won't be as excited to buy the expansions.

WoW WOTLK will rock, im pumped about it. I like Warhammer but its not for my style of play.
-
This thread made me want to install Starcraft on my laptop, but I misplaced my old CD and couldn't find it
So I went around the corner to CC and bought the Battle Chest (never played Brood War)
It's cool that Blizzard patched it to NO CD, saved me the trouble of hunting down a working crack
Starcraft :tauntaun

I can't wait to replay the campaigns :hump

Blizzard canned Warcraft Adventures for being shit. Starcraft Ghost as well.
Doesn't really help your point unless you are trying to be facetious.

That sucked. I played it. I know.

I still want Starcraft Ghost.
