My friend introduced me to this game awhile back and I finally got it. It's so much fun and pretty accurate to the 1960 election. A fun game for someone who studies politics.
The way the game works is very neat. There is a shared deck of cards with events in them (pictured below). These cards let you influence different regions or add to your support for one of the three key issues, defense/civil rights/economy. Anyway, Its a great game and a very interesting one considering the time of year.
It's very funny to see California go red and Texas go Blue (happens in 90% of the games).

That's pretty great. Do you remember the actual name of the game? I wouldn't mind picking it up, though I don't know if I'd have any luck convincing my friends to play it.

Sorry, its called 1960: The making of a president. I think its based on a book by the same title. It's really not that complex of a game. Give it a try.

does it feature a mini-game where you hide as many ballots as possible in drawers?

No but there is a debate mini-game.
