Title: My TGS report-Large piczzz
Post by: originalz on October 12, 2008, 08:05:00 PM
Yeah, so I had a pretty good time at TGS.  Here are my impressions from what I played...

KOF12-Obviously the build was nowhere near finished, but it played pretty nice and the new sprites work better than I thought they would.  I went undefeated and got some card for it, Japanese players suck until they read their Arcadia.

Ketsui/DDP-Good ports.

Mirror's Edge-It was really hard to get a feel for the game since the demo was so limited, but I did like the style of the game and they really nailed the feel of Price of Persia in 1st person.  I get the feeling that this game might lead to a revolution for 1st person platforming.

Resident Evil 5-Looks great, plays great.  Ammo seemed really limited, especially since you also have to share it with your partner.  Ran out of ammo on the chainsaw guy and got killed, that guy was tough, blew up a barrel next to him and he wouldn't die.  Partner system is really cool, I like how you back each other up and separate to complete tasks.

HAWX-Has a lot of potential.  The intercept system is neat, nice graphics and the demo level was solid.  Auto-pilot is worthless and caused me to crash.  It's like Ace Combat but without the awful acting and stupid storyline, I'll probably end up buying it when it comes out.

iDOLM@STER SP-Pretty impressive what they could fit on the PSP, full voices and the graphics are pretty good.  They're closer to the arcade version, pretty jaggy and the animation isn't nearly as good as the 360 version, but I guess that's to be expected.

Fallout 3-Japanese people don't know how to play this game.  The trailer is also god-awful since you'd never know it's an RPG by watching it.  Other than that, I enjoyed the demo, but only time will tell if the leveling and the quests/stories are good. 15 mins of it didn't say much. Graphically very high quality.

Prince of Persia-Controls weren't as fluid as I would expect, but the graphic style is awesome and the fighting moves are really well done and flow with the gameplay.  The demo area was obviously in a later area, so it was pretty difficult and I kept dying.  You have to replay the entire section if you die, I kind of liked the time rewind system better, but whatever.  Might be worth keeping an eye on.

I also played some crappy DS games who's names I don't remember.  There was also some rhythm game for the PSP which name escapes me, but it was somewhat decent.

I'll post picz of kool cosplays eventually.

RE5 looks exactly like RE4, down to enemy animations and clipping right through them. Is that how it actually is?

What? It does look like RE4. That hut scene is basically a re-bake of the village scene in RE4. Press A to push! Watch out for those wacky, unpredictable not-zombies, they will totally slow down and speed up their walk as they approach you! So just, you know, run through them. And watch out for the chainsaw ax dude!

I didn't pay attention to graphical glitches and enemy animations.

this is a tiny bit disappointing :-\ the important aspect of any PoP game is the controls... how is it compared to older PoPs?

Hmm, maybe around the same?  It's been awhile since I played the older games, but I think it just takes some getting used to.  I kept jumping while wall running by accident and falling to my death.  The thing is that the animation seems like it would be really fluid, but he more or less moves the same way as the older games, so it feels stiffer.  Not nearly as fluid as Ico.  You have to time the "Y" button while making a long jump so your partner can help you out, but I couldn't get a feel for the timing and just mashed the button everytime I did one of those jumps (strategy worked pretty well).  It might just need some time to get used to the animations and movements for timing, though.  I guess I was expecting completely fluid movement like most cel-shaded style games.  Still, the platforming that you do is definitely solid PoP stuff.

Oh yea, I watched the new Sonic game for 360.  Game sucks, the werehog parts look so bad, really slow and not fun to play.  Have to do stupid fetch puzzles, combat looked really boring.

this is surprising to me because in previous dev walkthroughs they said they were going for an easier/less-frustrating control mechanics to prevent you from dying as often as you did due to failed acrobatic stunts in the previous PoPs.

well that at least lets me put my fears about this game becoming too casual aside.

Yeah, it definitely ain't an easy game from what I played.  The combat was also pretty involved, you couldn't just mash the sword button, the enemy would parry and knock you to the floor.  You had to go good dodging, throwing, and having your partner rush out and knock them back.  Seems pretty involved and there are some cool attacks you can use with the environment.
