Seems like a good fit - the book is excellent, more timely than ever thanks to the Iraq imbroglio, and should allow for a good mix of SF spectacle and political braininess.
I'm also rooting for Ridley Scott to improve his action shots. No slomo.

This could definitely work. Looking forward to it. It would need to be somewhat lengthy, though.
-
Busy man. Isn't the best movie of all time coming out shortly?
-
nice.
like the book.
liked the director (now he's pretty much in "meh"-town)

yeah, I'm hopeful the return to SF will get him to bring his A-game

*edit*
Nevermind. I was thinking of someone else.

i would like to report that i was reading the WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE earlier this weekend.
The Devil Rides Out by Dennis Wheatley.
Hilariously misguided and racist with atrocious dialogue. I am tempting fate by continuing to read it but let me give you a few GREAT examples from the first 50 pages. (typo)
"What about this Servant you mentioned?"
i only saw him for a moment when he crossed the hall, but he reminded me in a most unpleasant way of the Boget Man with whom UI used to be threatened in my infancy"
"why, is he a black?"
"yes... This great brute stands about six foot eight, and the one glimpse I had of his eyes made me want to shoot him on sight. he's a "bad black" if i ever saw one, and i've rravelled, as you know, in my time"
With a sudden access of bitter fury he turned on Simon and seizing him by his silk labels shook him as a terrier shakes a rat. "You fool," he thundered. "I'd rather see you dead than monkeying with Black Magic"
"...What's the harm is Simon wants to try out a few old parlour games?"
"Parlour games! De Richleau took him up sharply.",my dear Rex i fear your prowess in aeroplanes and racing cars hardly qualifies you to judge the soul-destroying powers of these ancient cults."
then there's the part where they drape Simon's neck with a protective swastika. Simon is a "self professed" Jew. De Richleau defends this action by saying that though the Spanish inquisition misused the christian cross, it didn't lose it's original meaning. same thing here. I'm certain that Simon will find no problem with this either.
The book was written in 1934.

I haven't seen his newest film but Zodiac was fucking excellent. I don't know how many times I've watched that one.
wrong director

psst different director
-
Yeah, my mistake. I don't know what I was thinking.
Carry on. :p
-
Yeah, my mistake. I don't know what I was thinking.
probably "of David Fincher"
-
Ridley Scott has been attached to more projects then duct tape.
I suggest the thread title is changed to "Ridley Scott will direct this awesome film, Maybe."
-
Yeah, my mistake. I don't know what I was thinking.
probably "of David Fincher"
I know, I know. Sadly this isn't the first time I've made this mistake about Zodiac which is even more insane considering how many times I've watched the thing.

This and Nottingham will rock
-
Meh, can't get excited for Ridley Scott anymore, Kingdom of Heaven DC rocked but his more recent work has been so bland....
-
The book is great, but I felt like teh point was that "My life was exciting, but I am an asshole and I am nothing compared to what's happening around me" which is kind of anti-blockbuster, no?
-
i didn't get that at all from the book.
-
i didn't get that at all from the book.
Well I have a degree in English, therefore whatever.
-
can't really argue with that!

The plot for the book kind of reminds me of Gunbuster, in that it deals with the effects of time dilation in a military setting.
Anyway, it's great to see Scott come back to directing scifi.

The plot for the book kind of reminds me of Gunbuster, in that it deals with the effects of time dilation in a military setting.
it was written in like 1974 so it's literally the prototype for "time dialation in a military setting" stories. see also: Voices of a Distant Star
I am such a Forever War nerd that in addition to the recent "director's cut" paperback I own a 1980s paperback edition, the first edition hardcover (though not a first edition) as well as an actual first edition of the Japanese translation, 終わりなき戦い (Owarinaki Tatakai)
wow, looks like I am a Forever War fanboy

So in other words you're just calling first dibs on the first "wtf is this bullshit" thread when Will Smith is cast as William Mandella

WELCOME BACK TO EARF
