Only Arcadia of My Youth movie/series was actually from the 80's, but I'll give it to you anyway because I'm so nice.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor is mid-90's.

Can we convert this into an 80s general anime thread?

FOTNS, wicked city, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll.  Good times.

yay!

Nausicaa is awesomeness.

I need more 80s anime with post-apocalyptic settings, like FOTNS, Akira, and Vampire Hunter D (maybe not post-apoc, but sure seems like it.)

It needs a Beta release.

Fixed for the 80s.

Too bad Sony didn't create an HD Beta format to compete with D-VHS in the highly lucrative HD Video Cassette market. It would have been a format war to rival the RCA SelectaVision vs. the MCA DiscoVision.

Was Ranma 1/2 80's anime? I've always loved the style of late 80's/early 90's anime... stuff nowadays looks way too glossy, and overdone, and samey.

It started in 1989.

Digital animation has made a lot of things possible, especially on smaller budgets, that wasn't really possible before, but I tend to agree with this to an extent. It's a lot like the 2D versus 3D argument with me, in that I'd don't mind 3D animated movies but I don't want them to stop making 2D ones in the process.

Maison Ikkoku,

truly the greatest romantic comedy ever

I actually only ever watched the first couple of episodes, but read the entire manga.  It was nice seeing a Rumiko Takahashi series actually END in English.  I used to be the BIGGEST Ranma mark; loved it...but I got into it back when I was 11.  I'm 27 now and it's STILL not done from Viz comics yet as far as I know.   :lol

$34.99 for a dubbed VHS tape with two episodes...those were the days.  And people bitch about DVD prices now, LOL!  I got a shitload of Ranma tapes but finally quit buying them after the animation quality took a major nosedive in the third (or was it the second?) season.

Also Dominion Tank Police was different in animated form compared to its manga counterpart.  A lot of Shirow stuff is like that...Black Magic shared its name only.  Appleseed has yet to be done justice as an anime.  And while on Shirow, I think my least favorite series of his is Ghost In The Shell.  Appleseed and Dominion are his best.  Orion was pretty cool too.

Did anyone ever read Johji Manabe's stuff?  He did Outlanders and Caravan Kidd.  It's sad that he has faded away; I think all he's done for like a decade now are hentai comics.   :'(

You know what's so great about the Crusher Joe movie? It has a cool black guy with a gun for an arm FOURTEEN YEARS before Final Fantasy 7. Take that, Square!

All I remember about the two dubs is that in one, they call him "Canada" and in the other "Kaneda"
