After playing a few games on my new video card, I gots the fever
I can see where I'm going to hit a CPU bottleneck in some future games, though, so after the holidays I think I'm gonna upgrade
I want to keep it as cheap as possible, so I plan on stripping out what I can from my current PC and building from there
Here's what I have:
500w PSU
250GB HDD (I can just plop this into a new PC, windows vista and all, right?)
8800gts 640mb
DVD Burner
so, what are your recommendations as to what else I need?
Motherboard & CPU, Case, Ram, cooling fans, etc...
Just getting a list together right now so I can blow it out come January.

I have an E6750 Core 2 Duo that overclocked to 3.0ghz with no extra cooling. They've come out with better CPUs since then, but the thing is nice and probably pretty cheap by now.

Make sure you pay with snakes.
-
i don't know what that means
is it something political
-
Just get a Q6600
-
i can't find the link to your old pc thread, demi

What's your current monitor? Getting a good monitor is important for PC gaming. Stick to a 20 to 22 incher though, your card isn't really adequate for resolutions beyond 1680x1050.
-
i run mine on my hdtv, so 1366x768 is as high as i will ever go, like i said oblivion and bioshock look pretty sweet on it
i just want to upgrade my cpu, really, and try to get out cheap - i'm fine with the card right now (maybe i will upgrade later on)
-
If 1360x768 is what you're using, the 8800GTS should be sufficient for at least 2 more years. You'd see a pretty big jump in performance if you upgraded to a Core 2 Duo or Quad though.
-
should i just buy one of those barebones kits from tigerdirect (or wherever) that already has the cpu, ram, etc. included?
-
Sure, it's what I recommended to PD. Let me know what's your budget and I could recommend something.
-
I'd want to keep it less than $400, but that might not be possible

This seems OK. Just add 2x2 gb of ram.
-
how is this package?

That seems fine but do you need a new case? If not, I'd just spend more on faster ram and a better mobo.

don't mean to thread jack, but quick question: would it be worth my while to jump from 2gb DDR2 to 3gb or 4gb? Like I said, I have a 3.0ghz C2D and my GPU is a 8800GTS512, I run at 1440x900, in XP.
A framerate boost in Warhead would be nice, but an overall speed up in anything would be cool too. I just ask because I thought I read that it isn't worth going over a certain amount of ram in XP and that it could cause problems.

i guess i could gut out the case i have now, it's a hp stock a1520n

No, if you're just using XP. Both Crysis games have memory leaks anyway. Even with 4gbs of ram, I have to restart sometimes to make the framerate go back up.
