Title: Black Holes and Revelations isn't bad
Post by: Phoenix Dark on October 21, 2008, 04:32:16 PM
(http://tinyurl.com/6572ru)

The album is more in tune with Absolution than OoS though, which means less rockin and more highly produced soft songs; but while Absolution still manages to have a handful of rock-yer-balls-off songs BHaR lacks in that department imo. But I like the variety here. Supermassive Black Hole sounds like it should have been a White Stripes song, Starlight reminds me of that U2 song that always plays at Obama rallies, and uh Map of the Problematique also reminds me of U2 a bit

The last three songs: :rock :rock :rock

Overall it's a good album.

let the hate begin

So did you ever start to "get" OoS? I remember you being meh on the first time you listened.

Yea I like, it's their best album imo. I was more sour on Absolution initially than OoS, but I like them both now.

OoS>Absolution>BHaR

I like Muse, but the people who think they're the second coming of Jesus need to expand their music libraries.

I love BH&R. I like how diverse and unpredictable it is. In my opinion:

OoS > BH&R > Absolution.

When this album first came out, I thought it was just awesome instead of fucking awesome. Then it grew on me, reaching and reaffirming fucking awesome status with every listen.

Take a Bow and Soldier's Poem are awesome. I love the Queen-esque vocal harmonies in the latter. Starlight does sound very U2, but Map of the Problematique reminds me more of Depeche Mode than U2. Knights of Cydonia is fucking awesome, and awesomer live. If you've only got the English ver of the album, download the bonus song "Glorious".

And I suggest you watch / buy or download HAARP, the live performance from Wembley Stadium in London. They come out to Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights, and then burst into Knights of Cydonia. He does a great piano performance of Hoodoo. Plenty of songs off Origin of Symmetry and Absolution, they even do a great version of Unintended off Showbiz. When they play Blackout (Absolution), they have ballerinas flying above the crowd dangling from balloons... its a good, big show, and they sound as good as ever live.

This is the intro actually:

No, but it's a horrible example of the loudness war of modern music.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Look it up.

I like Muse but Black Holes sucks a lot of dick

I like Muse, but the people who think they're the second coming of Jesus need to expand their music libraries.

Name five rock bands to put out at least two albums since 2000 (with the debut album coming in or after 2000) that are better.

:rofl Are you kidding?

The Decemberists:
-Her Majesty
-Picaresque

Wilco:
-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
-Sky Blue Sky (not that great but still better than Bad Holes and Bads)

The Black Keys:
-Thickfreakness
-Rubber Factory

Yo La Tengo:
-And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
-I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

Modest Mouse:
-The Moon & Antarctica
-Good News for People Who Love Bad News

The Flaming Lips:
-Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
-At War with the Mystics (Soft Bulletin kicks the shit out of this but it's '99 ::))

The Shins:
-Oh, Inverted World
-Wincing the Night Away

Broken Social Scene:
-Feel Good Lost
-You Forgot It in People
-Broken Social Scene (because Feel Good Lost is more ambient-ish)

Arcade Fire:
-Funeral
-Neon Bible

Built to Spill:
-Keep it Like a Secret
-Ancient Melodies of the Future

There's 10 "rock" bands all with releases within the past 8 years that I would place above anything Muse has ever done. Except for maybe At War with the Mystics.

More than half of those are bands currently on major labels, and none of them have the deadpan vocals of groups like Pavement. So no.

Oh, Jesus Christ, The Decemberists are better than Muse?

Again, The Decemberists are better than Muse?

The Decemberists have the distinction of being the only Coachella band whose set I have ever left because it sucked. The only one.

I guess that's to be expected from a zealous Muse fanatic :'(

And then you have the gall to list some shit like Yo La Tengo, The Shins and The Black Keys.

Grow a fucking penis and get your indie/emo faggotry out of here.

I'm sorry that your definition of modern rock is limited to ~5 bands. If you're looking for something a little heavier I would be happy to recommend some excellent contemporary metal.

By the way, in your haste to defend your obsession with Muse you skipped half of my list. Take a chance. There's more to music than Muse, Radiohead, and RHCP.

Edit - Wow, you are a Sublime fan :lol Ignore all this, everything makes sense now.

You listed some good bands/albums...

but the thing is, no matter who or what else exists, Muse continue to be a great three-piece band that somehow emerged from devon (DEVON!!1!). What criticism I will allow is that their lyrics are usually a load of old bollocks. This album is the most coherent in the lyrical department. Not that it matters. Aside from that, I can't really fault them. They write great melodies, with great hooks, they play well, they're consistent... and they're great live.

I first saw them when they were touring Showbiz. A little known band called Coldplay were in support. I've seen them on every tour since then and to sum up: they always sound much bigger than a three-piece rock band, pulling off massive epic songs that merge fret-wankery, blooping appregiators and an almost orchestral sound. They are tight, they have a flamboyant singer with a unique voice and incredible range, and no-one else sounds like them (bolding that and saying Thom Yorke makes you deaf as well as fucking stupid btw :shh)..... They're probably the best UK live band at the moment. Matt Bellamy has his guitars custom made and designed by Hugh Manson, so they're not just guitars -- they're fucking MIDI controllers, and kaoss pads and awesome noise makers. They've got some great influences. Matt went on record as having liked Bends-era :bow Johnny Greenwood :bow2. Sometimes when he's on piano or keys he works in some motifs from fucking :bow rachmaninoff :bow2 into his songs. On Black Holes they have more than one nod to the greatest man AIDS ever killed - :bow Freddy Mercury :bow2. MotP sounds like :bow Depeche Mode :bow2. Matt Bellamy was also a big :bow Jeff Buckley :bow2 fan and I think that shows sometimes. My favourite thing about them though is that when they play live they try to put on as big a show that they can afford. If its not giant balloons floating out into the crowd, its huge satellite dishes on stage, inflatable UFOs, screens that fill the stage, ballerinas dangling off hot air balloons... They're good and they're value for money. Its good that they and all their albums exist.

begone haters! whats your contribution to society?  :punch

They do put on some great live performances, I'll give them that. Arena rock only goes so far though, especially when their lyrics are mostly, as you say, shit

You ask someone to name 5 bands better than Muse, the guy names TEN, and you choose one to discredit the entire list.  Frightfully predictable.

Someone leper this distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.

I personally hate Hysteria but can see how people enjoy it; I am more amazed at the bass line in KoC (my favorite Muse song), especially the tapping section. But Hysteria does have a nice bass beat.

Sorry, it's tough to keep my cool when I have someone telling me that Her Majesty by The Decemberists is better than Origin of Symmetry or Absolution.

You need to learn that your opinion is not fact, unless you want to keep coming off as an extremely defensive and judgmental music douchebag. Granted, no one else's subjective views are fact, either, but I used to sound a lot like you when I was a rabid Smashing Pumpkins fanboy in the 1990s.
