I like Lost Odyssey a hell of a lot, but it's an exception.  I can't really stomach the vast majority of JRPGs because of the character designs - Square's in particular are consistently nauseating.

The best genre there is, niccas.

And no offense, haven't you never played a single RPG? You really should try playing something before shrugging it off.

I like some JRPGs, but like most of you I don't care for the character designs, story (there are exceptions of course), dialogue, voice acting, etc.

Star Ocean 4's characters are hideous.

naw dood, that's not loli.  she's technically 35 in the game.  So it's not morally wrong to masturbate to her...if you weren't into dudes, of course.

I don't really think the characters freak me out any more than the uncanny valley types present in a lot of WRPGs. Oblivion in particular, at first I was absolutely floored by the intricate character customization option, but then realized, even after a half hour of tinkering, that I couldn't do anything to make my character not ugly.

I don't see any reason to play anything outside of the U.S. SMT series and Final Fantasy main series.   Vagrant Story and Chrono Trigger notwithstanding.

That seems like more of an art style preference to me.

S-E rpgs that aren't Vagrant Story and Crisis Core can die in an iron maiden.

SMT games that aren't SMT3 can die in a spiked pit.

Crisis Core wasn't that great, dude. Waaaaaay too button-mashy in battle, and extremely repetitive mission structure. Sweet production values though.

Some jRPGs are good.  Some are awful.  Still others fall somewhere in the middle.
Stop being so nuanced.

I tend to like them more than I dislike them.  The only main Final Fantasy I truly HATE is XII.  God, what a waste of funds.

Heh, I probably should have said "I'm a closed minded wop" :P

Yeah, but most of it is 2D sidescrollers/action, shmups, fighters, rail shooters, occasional (arcade) racer, puzzle, and of course quirky unique games... it's very rare I'll play through an FPS but there have been some exceptions. I don't even bother with WRPGs, RTS, squad based military shooters, rhythm games, and I hardly ever play online. Maybe it's just part of getting old, or mainstream gaming tastes passing me by. Ironically enough, even though I'm so big into dance music I am a fair deal more open with music than games (I just can't stand reggae, country, most pop, or emo) and will gladly go to non dance shows and download non dance type stuff.

I like J-rpgs but they all seem to have major negatives.  Half the time an rpg that starts off good ends up either having the plot suck (generic/terrible/stupid) or the battle system becomes broken, or the budget disappears.  Very few jrpgs are consistently HQ from start to finish outside Megaten games.

Then again I look at w-rpgs like Mass Effect and Fable 2 and they suffer from the same problems.

I guess it's just really hard to make a game consistently awesome in story, battle balance, dungeon design, environmental exploration, visuals, music for 30-60 hours.  Especially these days with sinking budgets.  Much easier to perfect a 6-8 hour FPS/TPS instead.

Yeah, I don't even give Star Ocean a chance because of the characters.

I agree Oblivion's characters are butt-ugly, but I'll take ugly over annoying.  BTW, I managed to make what I consider a decent-looking character but it took a long time.  I didn't even bother trying to create a woman because it would have just looked like a man.

I still play tons of Japanese rpgs, but my tolerance for mediocrity isn't what it used to be.  I also play tons of western rpgs.  My only problem with both types are that developers feel the need to have the game range anywhere from 40 to 80 hours to complete.  Well, I guess western rpgs are less now with Mass Effect taking way under 20 and people claiming Fable 2 takes 8 hours if you just do the story.  It's not that I don't mind long games, it's just that with long games you see games start to stretch parts or just include fluff to pad the length.

Oh, and I think dialogue is still a problem with rpgs.  I don't give a fuck what people are talking about in Fable 2 or any of these games, I don't need to hear them elaborate about whatever bullshit they are talking about, just make it snappy and entertaining.  Part of the reason Tales of Vesperia is so awesome is how good the dialogue is.

You are very similar to me, online aside.

I just cannot get into most RPGs and don't bother with RTS and squad-based games.  Sometimes I enjoy music games but most of the time I don't dig the soundtracks.

You've hit upon the main reason why I don't particularly like music games... not into the music. If a game had a mostly-licensed EDM soundtrack I would be all over that! I'm hoping that DJ game that comes out will be good but I think it's just gonna be mash ups  :-\

Another genre I'm not into... war simulations! It's too close to my job, in videogame form.  :P

That did come out pretty good! I tried making a woman, perhaps that was my problem.

:lol  Yeah, I think making a "woman" is virtually impossible.

It took so long that I think for Fallout 3 I'm just going to create the ugliest character I can.  It should be a lot quicker.
