Three ace demos in 3 days.  And hopefully Gamestop gives me the code to unlock the time trial mode for the demo.

Guess I have to wait until Friday then since the PS3 is out for repairs. :/

Killer week for demos though.  Tomb Raider Underworld, Banjo, and now this.  Rockin'.

I'm still on the fence about this one. I need to play it first. If I buy it, it's definitely not until a price drop.

The PC version still doesn't have a solid release date beyond "Late Winter 2008", unfortunately.

Nice. I hope this game turns out well.

So I guess this is being marketed as a PS3 game?

 :lol

Probably.

Microsoft secures exclusive demos. Sony gets 1-day exclusive demos.

:lol

Is it the primary console for development?

That's what I've heard from developers in interviews.

There's some exclusive content as well, not sure if it's DLC or already on the disc. Given that it's an EA game, I'm going to guess that it's DLC.

Probably PC, then.

Still, they're pimping the PS3 version. Good for EA to do, I suppose.

EA has actually been good to PS3 owners in terms of build quality.

I'm only buying EA games this Fall, everything else is to be rented only. Hell, is any company other than EA pushing original IPs this Fall? GOW2, RFOM2, Prince of Persia 8 or whatever the hell number they are on now, Call of Duty 5, Fable 2... nothing wrong with sequels, of course, but it's a bit interesting.

The amount of games coming out is getting to the point that its excessive.

They really need to spread these suckers out. Yes, we do get the random AAA title at other times during the year (Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, DMC4), but the majority of titles all come out during a 2-3 month window.

I'm thinking it may not be so dumb to release Mirror's Edge like this. After Dead Space, Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2, a game with a drastically different visual presentation (while still being decidedly striking and stylish, aka not of the Rare sort) may stand out quite nicely.

Why? They're all sequels, aren't they? Is there any reason to think there won't be a Call of Duty 6 because COD5 gets a release at the time of year when everyone buys games? Approach this rationally. To you, it looks like there are too many games. To hockey mom, it looks like they have that thing little Jimmy has been moaning about for weeks and it's only 50 bucks.

It isn't really even one day.  PSN updates Thursday nights, XBL updates mornings.  I think they wanted to have them come out as close as possible and this was their solution.  It is mainly because PSN has a fucked up way of updating the store.

Yeah, with some AA this would be 10/10 incredible graphics.  As it stands it's really good looking but soooo jaggy.  :\

Gameplay-wise I thought it was great.  Controlled really good and everything was fast and smooth.  Demo was too short though, didn't really get to do anything other than follow the tutorial rails.

Any word on if the X360 version will have at least 2x AA?

How is the sixaxis response? This is probably the first PS3 game I've seen since Warhawk where the tilt function makes sense and would work, but that's obviously dependent on execution. So, how is it?

No reason it shouldn't.

Well PS3 was the lead sku....

DICE isn't Criterion, though. I'd imagine lead SKU is just a matter of finding the most efficient development path, and obviously X360 --> PS3 hasn't worked so well.

Maybe that's 'cause PS3 is a POS?  When the majority of devs prefer the 360, there have to be some legit reasons.

Title: Re: Mirror's Edge demo: Tomorrow on PSN, Friday on XBL
Post by: Bebpo on October 30, 2008, 04:42:28 PM
And?  AA is cheaper on the 360, there isn't a single dev. that will tell you differently.

Well when there's no AA on a PS3 game it doesn't automatically mean there should be AA on the X360 one.  Dead Space has no AA on either system for example.

We shall see tomorrow if the X360 one has AA.  If not then PC version ftw.

Historical precedence? I can't think of a single UE3 game with sufficient AA.

Dead Space had a good transition.  Lead on 360, then spend the time and start leading on PS3...actually that doesn't make sense, but whatever they did rocked.

Identical it seems.  Both are 1280x720p, no AA, and locked 30fps with no tearing.

yeah no shit, the 360 obviously won that one.

That system is only good for really loud war and racing games; anything else becomes absolute shit due to noise levels. Unsurprisingly, it is most popular with Americans and Brits, and other loudmouth cultures. Also, amateur shitty shit shit UI that you have to experience once in a while further ruins the experience beyond repair. Which the system will need anyway after it RRODs for the 30th time this month.

Love the demo, sold me instantly on the game. Challenging and fun gameplay, gorgeous graphics and presentation, cool music. Not since Bioshock did a demo give me such a good feeling. I hope it'll be indicative of the entire game cause it'll be fun trying to perfect your runs. Very rewarding and satisfying in its cool look.

It sucks like any other ps3 game I've played that uses sixaxis shit, so I turned it off to never be bothered by it again.

One thing I like about the PS3 version is the controls.  I thought they felt really well laid out on the PS3 controller.  Doing all those commands with the bumpers is going to suck on the X360 one.

bumper + triggers. I would imagine going from bumper to trigger quickly to perform some of the more advanced moves would be a little awkward.

I got my time on Edge down to 48.95. I'm sure I can do 47 with some more practice.

uhmmm, the controllers have the exact same layout...

The only thing the DS3 does much better than the 360 is the face buttons. Playing DMC4 on the 360 was a nightmare compared to the PS3.

The shoulder buttons feel like afterthoughts on the 360 pad, too. But then the triggers are a shitload better than the PS3 triggers. Well, for shooters and racing games at least.

The wall jump was a bit annoying until I realized how simple it was.  L1 (hold to go higher/further), R1, L1.  It can get more complex when you want to build up on a corner and go off one wall, then it would be L1, L1, R1, L1.  Sometimes you also need to lift up your legs.  One point in the second time trial area you need to to L1, L1, R1, L1, L2.

And I don't think the game was build for the PS3 controller, but I would hope they include other controller options for the 360 version.  I don't see why it could be Left Trigger = down, Right trigger = up; left bumper = 180, right bumper = combat.

i rolled my eyes as well when i realized i wasted 60 bucks.

DMC4 had a demo for both systems before it released.

I prefer the PS3 image quality over the 360. I like the 360 pad more though, better thumbsticks and the triggers are superior and the bumpers are great for jumping. Easier to cover both of them (triggers + bumpers) with my index fingers so it's faster too.

Yes, this game really is incredible.  The game truly rewards skill in a way I didn't actually expected.  It's not automated at all (unlike Assassin's Creed or the PoP series).  Brilliant game.

If only the PC version were going to be released this year.  :(  The 360 controller button layout doesn't work for me with this game (due to use of bumpers), but the PS3 version is jaggier.  While I normally use a 360 pad on my PC, I could use a Dual Shock 2 as well for this game plus I'd get 60 fps and flawless image quality (unless AA fails to work properly like a few other UE3 PC titles).

Tried the X360 demo.  Still looks jaggy but less jaggy so maybe 2x AA?
Hated the control though, was getting much slower times with the X360 controller.  Who wants to play a game where the majority of commands are hitting LB while holding up on the analogue.  Far too cramped for comfort.  Should've switched jump to LT and slide to LB since you jump more than you slide.

If I had a decent spec PC I think I'd go for the PC version with a USB PS2 controller.

Yeah, 360 game looked slightly better (still jaggies and all that, just slightly less) and it could just be me, but the loading times also seemed to be a bit better.  And while you guys are fine with using the bumpers and all that, I had big time problems with it.  I'm sticking to getting it on the PS3, then picking it up on Steam when there is a sale.

Yeah, I actually like the LB/LR combo, because jump feels like a tappy-tappy move, whereas sliding is more of a long, sticking move by nature.

The jump/up button isn't just tapping.  When wall climbing/running you need to hold it to get more distance.

The point of that is make the PS3 version comparable, not exactly superior.  Efforts to port from 360 to PS3 fail because it's porting from something simple to something complex and shit gets lost in the process.

The only place that jaggies were really nagging for me were on thin lines, like cable-esque things.  But heck, most of the time you are moving so fast that it's not noticeable at all.

I liked what I played, but I'm not sure how much I dug the controls mapped to the shoulder buttons and triggers.  The 360 shoulder buttons are the only other weak link on the 360 controller aside from the d-pad.

the controls are very technical and do pretty much everything different than any other FPS.  it's one of the better platformers I've played because every move just feels so perfect when you finally learn how to pull it off.  sucks about having to pre-order to get the time trial code though.

Yeah, combat seems shitty, but everything else seems great.  Well, except for the prince being the exact same character as Nathan Drake or the character from Assassin's Creed (the future one).  I think them making the combat 1 vs 1 means it will be rare, which is a good thing.

time trial mode is FUCKING AWESOME, but some of the combinations of wall runs and wall jumps and tucks just require too much controller dexterity. it's like doing a difficult combo in a fighting game -- even if you know exactly what to do, you'll only get it right once every three times. i've got three stars on the first course, but the second is frustrating the hell out of me -- i've got to be missing at least one shortcut, and bypassing those stairs at the beginning is an epic pain in the ass

The hell? All I said was that lead platform doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of quality, just a smarter development path. Again, you are the GOP of the console war.

Anyway, it's certainly humorous to see the common xtards declare Great Victory here. As if the version of Great Victory wasn't a jagged pile itself. But then again, Xtards are less refined and obviously can't be trusted to make judgment calls on the quality of anything, given their preference for a garbage system (with shit UI). So hey, maybe they really don't see any issues.

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to wait for the PC version of ME (or just rent one of the console versions for now). It looks hot, but the idea of playing this without jaggies is becoming quite attractive. Any new info on PC release date?

I don't have my PS3 so I can't compare but from what I played of the 360 game there didn't seem to be a jaggy problem.  Don't know what the issue is here.

That particular move actually made the game feel too, er, gamey. It felt like it should have been an automatic motion.

yeah, sequences of wall jumps can feel like abstract videogamey button gymnastics. i was thinking that they should either automate the wallturn or the tuck -- but there are certainly situations where you want to jump off a wall without turning, and there may be situations where you don't want to tuck (i.e. to fall slightly short on a jump and grab the ledge). and the relative lack of automation is one of the things i like about the game. so i'm just going to hope that it starts to feel more natural when you get used to it

edit: come to think of it, there's a situation right at the beginning of the second time trial where you don't want to tuck: if you tuck on the first walljump, you don't really have space to make the second walljump -- that little loss of momentum as you land is desirable

46.9 On Edge.
I wish there was a way to watch your replay Halo 3 style. I gotta bask in this shit for awhile.

Yeah, I really wish that was in the game.  I wish I could also just watch someone elses run and learn from it.

actually, I thought it was pretty cool how I kept improving because I wanted to keep up with the ghost to learn the movements.  the most tense thing is hearing them doing actions at the exact same moment as you and just making sure not to choke.

Yeah I think I might tell Gears of War 2 to go get fucked and get this instead.

Not sure which version to get though.  I like the shoulder buttons on the PS3 better, but I like the analog sticks better on 360.

For the time trial mode, I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that you can download ghosts and see their red "footprints".  they probably didn't put it in the demo for fear of giving it too much replayability.

I would also like online competitive races. Just have your competitor be the ghost so there's no bumping into each other. I would imagine racing against an actual person in ghost form would be more fun than against someones best run at that given time.

You can view their footprints in the demo. They aren't permanent, but they are there.
Though nothing can replace watching an actual ghost at different angles from the third person.

Hm. I do pretty much that. I do the wall jumps over the stairs, run along the edge of the building the make the big jump. THe only thing that's different is that I don't jump completely over the railing onto the big boxes with fans on it.

I'm betting if I do that I can probably get my time down to 45 because the way I do it takes about a second-half second longer.

PS3 version of Mirrors Edge also has better audio, so this is a plus.

Have faith run at full sprint, you can hear the difference.  Plus enviromental effects are more noticeable.

you can do that, but they can outrun you fairly quickly.  the foot steps also don't reveal a lot about what they were doing.

I changed the color spectrum of my 360 from expanded to intermediate and that seemed to work a bit to get a better image. After playing the PS3 version again it does have more jaggies but the HDMI seemed to give a better color spectrum, especially in shadows. Don't know how to fix this for 360, I just got PS3 settings for my TV from the avs forums and they're very good. The 360 settings seem like a small step down or it's the difference between VGA and HDMI.

edit: i should qualify -- i just don't really groove on platforming/parkour in first-person, it seems. it all seemed choppy and migraine-inducing, to me, and there weren't any cool "vertigo" moments in the demo, ala pure or hydro thunder. i also really, really dislike having jump/slide on the left shoulder buttons.

I like that you can turn the red off. It makes the game too obvious and "follow the red." This game is basically PoP in first person, which is pretty neat. I don't imagine the no gun achievement being hard to get, considering the guns are fucking useless.

I actually like the red marking where you need to go, since I'm that person who runs around nonstop in 3D action games, confused, trying to find where to go (this was especially bad in the Halo games). I agree with Prole on the mapping of jump to LB and slide to LT, I was just like "wtf" when I saw that. Graphics are very nice, don't like the lead character design.
