Title: Customer SERIOUSLY told me he did not care about returning DVDs because The Rapture is next Tues
Post by: The Fake Shemp on October 29, 2008, 05:06:16 PM: Some old white guy rented like, nine movies today. I told him they were due on Monday and he commented that he did not care - no joke! - because we are voting in the Anti-christ next Tuesday. He was dead serious and angrily left the store.

I'm managing the video-side as the company restructures into a retail outlet for entertainment. Hybrid stores (Hollywood Videos with glass cabinet sections full of games a la Wal-Mart) are rolling out, along with conversion stores (GameCrazy expansion run by one manager), etc. Most stores and now condensing their old library to make shelf space for sell-through DVD, HD (you can reserve BDs for sale and we start selling BDs regularly in Jan) and videogame merchandise.

I've been helping stores with this process. I'm also the point man to help the rental veterans to tackle pre-orders for games and DVDs. This sell-thru and reserve transition has stumped some of the older vets.

You can trade-in your movies now.

In summary, prepare for a non-highway robbery version of FYE. And I expect within two years that all company stores will be rebranded as one entity (Hollywood Entertianment or something).

The good news is since emerging from bankruptcy, they have entirely new senior management team and renewed vendor support on the game-side (such as guranteed reservation allocations, better cost deals, etc.). I'm not too worried about the immediate future, as the company pulled through Q3 and made some financial strides. Its poised to do well Q4.

Long term success will be dependent on some of these vets making the transition. That's what I'm here for.
