Title: PC FPS players: control/mouse settings
Post by: Phoenix Dark on November 27, 2006, 02:06:21 AM
What kind of settings/mice do you guys use? Most people are shocked when I tell them I use a trackball mouse to play FPS games, but it's true. I find the trackball to be much faster and accurate than a regular mouse. Instead of having to move the entire mouse around, I only have to manipulate the ball, and it can be moved at rapid speed. For a couple months I had to use a regular mouse, and it really made me a poor player; eventuall I got better with it, but I found myself constantly losing battles where someone would attack me from behind and I simply couldn't turn around fast enough. I got my trackball mouse back a couple days ago and I'm kicking ass again.

Also, what about sensitivity? I originally played with mine really high (like 5.15), but now I have it lower (around 3.0). My brother played with a sensitivity of around 1.2 and I don't see how he can do that. o_O

I assumed pretty much all PC gamers used optical mouses.

I use a laser based mouse and a regular ol keyboard. Laser is the way to go, the jump in precision between optical and laser is pretty nuts.

Buy a Logitiech MX518 and never look back. Adjustable sensitivity on the fly is awesome.

Never buy a wireless mouse.

I cant go back to wired. My wireless only has issues once every 2-3 months when it needs new double 8's, the reaction time is fine.

Well if you hate wires then I suggest the Logitech MX 1000. Although imo its a bit laggy. But I might be crazy!

Laser Logitech mouse..don't know which model it is, though. It's pretty basic.

This has served me well for two years now. I love the positioning of the MOUSE 4/5 buttons. Makes for easy switching of weapons or other game functions.

The mouse wheel also serves as ANOTHER button also. I can almost map every important key to my mouse.

It comes with a recharge dock and a full charge is good for 6-8 hours of play.

I have one pretty similar to ToxicAdam's.

Mine is stained with sweat of a man who bunnyhops his way to victory in every game he plays.

I usually rank about the middle in BF2 scores after games. I just dont play enough to be elite commando.

I found it hilarious tho that both the 1.4 and 1.41 patches were over 500MB, 1.41 was 5 megs more and required if you dled 1.4 a few weeks prior lol.

I was actually pretty good. http://bf2s.com/player/43981987/

I would finish near the top as assault or spec ops. I just burned out on the game REAL QUICK once I hit the 120 hour mark.

Then a few updates passed by and SF came out .. and it just seemed to overwhelming to get back into it.

I tried to play again in the summer. Lasted for one map and was disgusted by all the support players proning and owning. Maybe I was rusty, but they seemed sniper-like in their aim.

You'll take so much comfort in knowing that I have the exact same model mouse as you. The only difference being that mine's a swirly blue instead of red.

Actually, mine is just plain grey. I don't think they had the faggy colors out when I bought mine.

The red one looks like it came from Victoria's Secret. This blue one isn't bad.

Not throwing any direct insults out, but are there any professional gamers that do not use a laser mouse or ball mouse that you move around (not tracker ball) ?

I have weird issue about always using a ball mouse (I clean it all the time though) just because sometimes the laser ones aren't so precise.  They'll screw up randomly sometimes... but when I jerk the ball mouse around and need to move fast I'm always right on.

Man...  I know I'm a cocky son of a bitch anyways, but I am so fucking good at PC FPSs ;)

Your post doesnt make much sense. Any issues with random jumps of a laser mouse have to do with calibration and the drivers for the mouse itself. I own a laser mouse and the only time I get random jumps and precision issues is when im low on batteries, I mean this IS a wireless.

A ball mouse has way more moving parts and aside from geekishly polishing it before bed to keep it 'tuned up', its design suggests that in any given movement there are actually a series of very very small errors that occur as the ball rolls against the inside of the mouse that are compensated for by drivers and what not. I mean you are effectively skipping points of input when you move a mouse ball in any condition.

Its never going to be 100% because unlike the laser mouse it doesnt almost entirely depend on mathmatical computations but rather the physical performance of the mouse's structure. Your situation might have to do with laser mice being too precise, and after years of ball-mouse gaming you have grown so accoustomed to playing WITH the inaccuracies that playing without them feels wrong.

Sometimes when you jerk a laser mouse too quickly it goes crazy.  This has happened for me with every single laser mouse I've ever used, and I've probably played like 100 different ones.

and pssh, nothing about my ball mouse is "inaccurate" ;)  The ball mouse is damn accurate whenever it's clean.

Yeah, I just can't use regular mice for FPS, laser or no laser. Track balls work much better for me
(http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/561/logitechphotoga8.jpg)

But since I had to use a regular ball mouse for a month, going back to track ball has been a somewhat slow transition. Sometimes I just suck at aiming, other times I pull off 70 kill games.

I like it because it offers very clean 360 degree turning, which is important in FPS. It also allows me to circh strafe someone with the mere stroke of a couple fingers, which is nigh impossible to defend against if you have a regular mouse

i've got my 360 controller in my PC now, going to try out Scarface there's been some patches for the game since last played it.
