This isn't a platform game, then. You can eke out hidden extras on-foot in the hub world, Showdown Town, but this is a driving, flying and boating game, with almost no player death or hairy jumps to worry about. You are collecting 131 jigsaw pieces (jiggies) - in much the same framework as Mario gathering stars - but every task begins by asking you to select or build a vehicle to fit the brief. You're never let loose on foot and then given the choice, and if you were, you wouldn't enjoy it, because the vast, ornately detailed openworld level environments would take several minutes to cross, and their thick bridges, riverbeds, hills, pathways, iceflows and buildings are impractical for platforming. They're either there to absorb your rubber, or look sexy as you deliver coconuts to a supply ship, barge Mr. Patch into a cactus with a biplane, or launch yourself off a ski-jump in a homemade toboggan.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is a game that never stopped being fun for me. It's an odd duck that doesn't fit into any conventional game genres and probably isn't right for everybody. Despite its friendly appearance, Nuts & Bolts isn't exactly easy to pick up and play and might be over the head of some small children. There's a lot of depth here and the vehicle creation tools allow you to flex your mind and your fingers at the same time. This is a great change of pace from the usual Xbox 360 fare and a game that will offer a lot of fun to those willing to invest some time in it.

Ultimately, there’s a great idea at the core of Nuts & Bolts and, from superb construction tools right through to lavish presentation, there are plenty of individual elements worthy of praise. When it fails though, Banjo fails badly and the lack of any fundamentally engaging framework to support the game’s creative elements renders the game pretty much obsolete for anyone looking for something to appreciate beyond the incredibly flexible building component in isolation. There’s one moment of delicious irony in Banjo as you hop from one bland task to the next though. Don’t like the vehicle-based gameplay on offer?, the loading screen enquires. Don’t worry, it says, before suggesting you might want to try downloading the original Banjo-Kazooie from Xbox Live.

The main issue is that there are a ton of games out this holiday season that are fun from start to finish, while Nuts and Bolts will probably take most of you up to a point before you lose interest in the Lego-like construction projects and the pursuit to beat all of the challenges.
That last quote was my main concern while playing the demo. I couldn't honestly see myself tinkering with vehicles for an entire game, even if the parts get better and the cars/planes more badass.

wait...this isn't a platformer? :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

yeah just saw that! i'll add it to the op
-
Maybe I should cancel my preorder and just buy the XBLA game when it comes out.
-
Where is Crushed? Platforming pwnt
-
I'm still buying it. I had concern earlier on that the actual 'missions' wouldn't be that enjoyable, but building cool vehicles is enough for me. Plus it's a budget game and I get the XBLA game for free.
Rare really should have taken the idea of building vehicles and built a new Blast Corps around it. It would be so much more awesome to build vehicles for the purpose of destroying more efficiently.
-
I'll probably at least rent it, simply because it's quite unique and because grit and gore fatigue is going to set in with a vengeance in a few weeks. I can't believe I'm even saying this, but I'm starting to look forward to something from Team Ico. :S Playing video games these days is akin to sitting through a monster horror and stupid action movie marathon.
-
I'll get BK for XBLA. Fuck you Rare for ruining BK3
-
What amazes me is that people are only now getting on the Rare hate train. Did people not play SFA, GBTG, Kameo and PDZ or something? Nothing has punished my inner Xbot quite like Rare.
-
Lol inner xbot. Whatever.
Saw this from a mile away, i knew this was gonna be average from the time they showed it. Well at least it ain't overrated, unlike stuff like RC and shit.
Or maybe it is, damn lol

Kameo was good! Not AAA, but it was fun outside the battleground connector area. Had some really nice looking gfx at the time too. Also I thought people really liked VP?
But yeah, they've done a lot of shit. After reading those reviews I think I won't get this. I haven't even played the originals so I'm not a Banjo fan. Was just getting it because I love platformers but :-X
-
Seems like a total piece of shit. Who could expect anything else from Rareware?
-
9/10

I think BT was hampered by the N64 limitations and had to make a lot of compromises for the game as a result. They should have just waited to put it on the Game Cube as a launch title. Would have been much better.
-
oh well
wish i had a 360 so i could decide for myself
-
Hey guys I didn't get my fill of rare hater idiots on GAF, can I have some MORE?
Seriously, we get it, now fuck off.

-
Nah, few months back.
UK devs am the best. Fuk da haters.
-
I'll pass on this one. Too many great games coming out to mess around with something that seems average at best.
-
Not my fault Rare fucked up with this game
-
1up says it's awesome (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3171140&p=4) :bow2
banjo :bow2
-
Meh, I'm still getting it to decide on.
-
Another 1up dude trying to get a gig at MS, eh?
:piss Rare :piss2
:piss 1up :piss2
-
If I can get my XBLA freebie THEN transfer my pre-order money... then I might bail. Otherwise I'm sticking with it.

agentice beezy :'(
-
Teamxbox gave 7.7 for graphics,amazing
-
wow, rare put out a shitty game? didn't see that one coming
-
1up is total crap. They'll pretty much suck as much dick as possible in hopes of getting hired by a publisher.
-
lol rare
-
why would somebody aspire for fierce independent spirit writing about fucking videogames?
-

I think quite a lot of people have been apathetic towards Rare since DK64 and Banjo-Tooie (Conker was shit too even though most people went gaga over it). The lacklustre Gamcube/XBox/360 games have just cemented the fact that Rare doesn't have it anymore.
hopefully this will convince microsoft to shut down rare once and for all.
They really should. Which means no Jet Force Gemini 2 :'(.
They'd probably fuck it up anyway.
-
1up is so weird now. The old people are bitter as fuck and find distinguished mentally-challenged logic to help explain why they don't like a game (watch the Dead Space segment on the 1up Show to be amazed), yet the younger crew is so optimistic and loves to give high scores. An example is this guy who reviewed Banjo 3 and gave it an A- also reviewed Roogoo and giving it the same score. Where's the Roogoo love fest?
-
All the good shills from 1up have long since left to other companies. What is left now are the bitter rejects and young upstarts hoping to suck enough cock to be hired by Activision or Microsoft or Sega.
-
Meh. I liked the demo.
-
I find it funny how much nerd rage this game brings out.
-
On both ends.
Banjo makes gamers go ass to ass
-
Yeah, I knew this company has no redeeming qualities after they released Kameo. lol @ people calling it the zelda killer. Even Twilight Princess was more enjoyable than that piece of shit.
-
I thought the vehicle design shit was great, still getting it. Never had high hopes for the actual missions.
