Munich Speilberg could maybe pull it off, but not Indy 4 Spielberg.

But Will Smith?  :S

Can't wait for the hammer fight scene to become the broken 40oz bottle fight scene

Uh, Munich Spielberg and Indy 4 Spielberg is the same damn man. For one, it was THE LAST FUCKING MOVIE HE DAMN DIRECTED BEFORE INDY 4.

The real truth: Oldboy is NOT a film that Spielberg should be remaking at all. I don't think he is the type of director that can do it justice.

I could see somebody like De Palma maybe having a somewhat decent shot at remaking Oldboy.  But Spielberg has always been waaaaaaaaay too classy for anything like that (not to impugn the source material, but Stevie don't play dat).  And Will Smith has based his entire film career on mass-appeal and mostly inoffensive blockbusters.

This ain't happening.  This doesn't fit in with either of their career trajectories, and as two of the most powerful figures in the entertainment industry, neither of them have any reason to do this.  I repeat, this has got to be BS.

the question is can he do it again?

I just don't see the point in remaking it. Its not the type of movie that you can keep what makes it special and make it a mainstream success at the same time.

Correct. They don't need to remake it AT ALL. Horrible idea. I mean, still. What is Spielberg going to do? Doesn't he have like three or four project going right now anyways?

Post by: HyperZoneWasAwesome on November 07, 2008, 04:00:12 PM
what is JSA?
an earlier, and fully awesome Chan-Wook Park movie.  Its about an unlikely friendship that develops between two pairs of border guard post watchers, one of them North Korean, the other South Korean, its also a murder mystery/thriller.  Unlike his other films its very warm and humane, but doesn't skimp on the directorial flashiness.  The title stands for Joint Security Area, the place where all the action happens.

Its also a very uniquley Korean story, and I can't for the life of me guess as to how to make an artistically successful American remake.

That's a pretty big spoiler for the movie, may want to cover it up.

I watched the original tonight and I think a remake could totally work and be really good like Infernal Affairs -> The Departed.  I think they could improve on the ending and make the film come together better in the end.  I do think they might need to change the twist for US audiences, but then again I think US audiences could handle it.

Sure Indy 4 was weak but Speilberg has a good resume so I'm interested in his take on the story.

*spoiler*

part of the stroyline, which is basically the entire movie.

Woo-jin's motivation for his actions is flimsy even in the original film.  They need to change that if they're going to connect with an American audience, and with that change, they'll probably just end up dropping the whole scenario for something Americans can better relate to.  We aren't a particularly shameful people, nor are we quite so dramatic about it.

I will tell this to my Korean roomie and see how he responds.
he might not care.  Park's films have been successful in Korea, JSA was the highest grossing film of its year, but his last film was a flop (the so far unreleased in America I'm A Cyborg, But That's Okay) and his Vengeance trilogy plateaued in popularity with Lady Vengeance, not Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance was another bomb.  He's in the top-tier of commercially successful Korean filmmakers, and he's in the top-tier of internationally known Korean filmmakers, but he's not the biggest fish in the pond, at least not right now (Universal will see to it that his latest film gets great distribution worldwide).

Now if you told your buddy that they're remaking The King and the Clown (highly popular gay friendly costume tragicomedy) as a vehicle for Steve Carell, he might get really steamed(they're not, its a joke).  Or you could just remind him that the My Sassy Girl remake was apparently bad enough to go straight to video, or that Dragon Wars is still the highest grossing international Korean film ever, or that Lee Byung-Hun gets to be 13th  billed in the G.I. Joe movie, behind Marlon Wayans even.

(ends sleepily made Korean film tirade)

I told my former Korean film professor and he pretty much had the same reaction I did in the first post, but in so many words :lol

Also, how was "I'm a cyborg"?  I realize it wasn't a commercial hit, but it sounds like a totally quirky movie anyway...the kind I'd like to see.

My roomie says it's cool that Spielberg and Smith will be doing it, "they are very famous and will bring attention to Korea and Korean culture" he doesn't seem to care they will change the movie.

is he much of a film buff?  'cause the Korean scene definitely doesn't need Spielberg's brand of help.  and 9/10 americans won't care where it comes from and will get scared for their lives when they hear that the source material involved incest.

Steven Spielberg & Will Smith Present: Grindhouse 2. They should go ahead and double it up with a remake of Ichi the Killer.
